Mill vs. Wilson
Someone who is struggling with alcoholism does not see his problem as a concern. This is due to denial or shame, so he tends to ignore the issue. Some may believe that nurture was at fault. The person may have grown up in an abusive environment, so consuming alcohol could have been a coping mechanism. Others may believe that human nature was at fault. The person could have inherited drinking from a family member, most likely their parents. Psychologists, scientists, and behaviorist all have different assumptions on why people are the way they are (McLeod). Mill and Wilson take their own sides on this debate.
Mill leans towards the nurture side of the argument. He knows that “the human faculties of perception, judgment, discriminative feeling, mental activity, and even moral preference are exercised only in making a choice” (Mill 56). It is essential for people to make their own decisions based on their knowledge. When they do this not only are they replicating everyone else, but they are learning how to exercise their brains. People do not have to follow commonly practiced customs, so they need to decide what they believe. In many cases, parents are the influencers of what customs their children follow. This is not necessarily a bad thing since children cannot choose for themselves, due to the lack of knowledge. However, when they reach an appropriate age, they need to be given the opportunity to decide. If they are not, then this violates their rights. In addition to that, it violates the harm principle, which is defined as “injuring the interests of one another” (Mill 73). This counts as depriving people from their basic freedoms: speech, religion, and the press.

...ld not be the judge of others. People should learn to be preserving, and do whatever they choose. The only restriction to that is not harming others in the process of their self-discovery.
Wilson believes that “consilience is the key to unification” (Wilson 8). With that being said, people should work together to discover new truths. They should use science, since that they were made from science. Learning about themselves will bring about new truths. Learning why they behave the way they do can explore disorders and possible diseases. Science ties in with everything that we see and do. There has to be evidence for everything that people claim. They cannot just say that they sky is blue, they must present evidence that is going to support their argument.

Set in the future, the mother is faced with a decision: whether or not she wants to die as a result of having too many memories, or as a result of having none at all. The son, Aaron, takes quite a different approach however as he feels that it is not a question of death, rather a question of life.

The Effects of Nature and Nurture on Shaping of Behavior The nature/nurture investigation has been studied for many years by psychologists and it is a subject that is still in debate today. It brings up the question, how is our behaviour shaped, and the two sides of the answer are nature and nurture. Behaviour in the context of a human being can be described as; the way humans act and think in situations. What is meant by nature and nurture?
Intelligence by definition is “the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills” (Oxford Dictionary, 2014). However, many psychologists argue that there is no standard definition of ‘intelligence’, and there have been many different theories over time as psychologists try to find better ways to define this concept (Boundless 2013). While some believe in a single, general intelligence, others believe that intelligence involves multiple abilities and skills. Another largely debated concept is whether intelligence is genetically determined and fixed, or whether is it open to change, through learning and environmental influence. This is commonly known as the nature vs. nurture debate.
The ongoing debate on whether nature or nurture is responsible for intelligence seems to be a never-ending argument. In this instance, Mill would agree with the court ruling because, like his views concerning free exercise of will, government restriction and majority rule, both the court ruling and Mill’s ideals are concerned for the best interests of the individual rather than for the greater good of society. Complete free exercise will inhibit individual and societal freedom. According to Mill, one may act as one chooses unless one is inflicting harm on others. He argues that one is free to behave “according to his own inclination and judgment in things which concern himself” as long as “he refrains from molesting” (64). The problem arises in the freedom allowed to the individual performing the potentially dangerous act.
Psychologists have debated the argument of nature vs. nurture for years on end. Although more evidence is being discovered, the topic is still very arguable. The debate started back in 1869, when Francis Galton was the first to use the phrase, “Nature vs. Nurture” (ORIGINS). The debate circles around whether people are who they are from their genes, or if their environment impacts their actions and personality. Most psychologists believe it is a one or the other decision, however there are still a few who believe both are right.

Also drinking alcohol is closely linked with use of other drugs, legal and illegal. Smoking, drinking and drug taking often co-exist. I chose this article to review because I think it has good examples to show people what causes alcohol dependence and what conditions one can get if drinking alcohol often. People need to remember that we live ones and it is important to keep ourselves healthy and none of bad habits worth our life.
