Naturalistic observation is a method that is used to collect behavioral data in real life situations. The researcher needs to be careful not to interfere with the natural setting. Data can be gathered by observing from a distance without making the subject aware that he/she is been observed. The researcher can also join the setting and became a part of it so as to gain the trust of the subjects. As a result the subjects will behave normally. The observation may be direct or indirect. In the direct method the researcher is present in the setting but in the indirect method other means such as video recordings are used. Indirect method allows the observer to capture activities that would easily be unnoticed. Direct method on the other hand allows the observer to focus on particular areas of interest.

This is a naturalistic observation of a child and his parents in a health care facility.

Mrs. Farrington was constantly worrying about allowing him out of the house or be with other kids. The hospital constantly kept correcting this behavior by stating that she needs to allow him to be like other kids but sometimes it was her first instinct to prevent hospitalization. Observational learning is described as learning behaviors through watching others. Turkle shares a story based on this learning style. She says, "A 15-year-old boy told me that someday he wanted to raise a family, not the way his parents are raising him (with phones out during meals...) but the way his parents think they are raising him – with no phones at meals and plentiful family conversation" (Turkle Par. 5). The smell of disinfectant engulfed me as soon as I stepped into the hospital. There are four steps in the process of modeling for observational learning. They are attention, retention, reproduction, and motivation. Attention is when you focus on what the person you are observing is doing. Retention is remembering what you observed.
