What are the advantages and disadvantages of natural and synthetic fibers in clothing?
Natural and synthetic fibers are a crucial part in the creation of clothing worldwide. A fiber is a raw material with properties including the suitable length, pliability and strength, all qualities that give it the ability to be used in fabrics and yarns. Fibers consist of different types of polymers, and all fibers are made of polymers. ("Polymer (chemistry)"). A polymer is a large, or macromolecules formed in a repeated pattern called a monomer. Different polymers have varying properties and this is why some materials are sought after to be used in fabrics and some aren’t ("Polymers in Textile Fibers"). A very important element in most polymers is carbon, as it forms a wide variety of bonds. Polymers are produced biologically in nature, and also have the ability to be created synthetically, hence synthetic fibers ("Synthetic Fibers"). So this leaves the question, what are the advantages and disadvantages of the respective natural and synthetic fibers and what is the reasoning behind choosing one over another? What qualities do natural and synthetic fibers have that persuades people toward using them?
The use of natural fibers in clothing has been found to date back to the 6th and 7th centuries. Recently, scientists have discovered clothing and rugs made from natural fibers during the excavation of an area notorious for its information about the Swiss cave dwellers of the 6th century. ... Acknowledging that natural fibers are not always the better option, they present viable reasons as to why they are useful. They are soft and breathable, yet strong at the same time.
In conclusion while positive and negative parts of both synthetic and natural fibers exist, as evidence in the reasons presented before, natural fibers are the better option for the use in clothing. Their molecular structure makes them reliable and they are already being used, and have been for a long time for many different types of clothing. They are more environmentally friendly and are produced without the use of chemicals, and their polymers stay intact. Synthetic fibers have their advantages, but they are undermined by the prominent disadvantages. Both are necessary to modern life, and it is important to continue the research being made into further improving these products.

The book is well written and thoroughly researched but does have its’ share of weaknesses.

There are two popular ways of creating nylon for fiber applications. One, ¡°molecules with an acid (COOH) group on each end are reacted with molecules containing amine (NH©ü) groups on each end.¡± The nylon 6,6 is made in this fashion. Weaving is a common thread among cultures around the world. Weaving is a way of producing cloth or textile. Today we have machines that weave large-scale textiles at cheap prices. Production of cloth by hand is rarely engaged in today’s Westernized societies. Not many people are thinking about how the fibers are actually constructed to make their clothes. However, in other cultures across the world the tradition of weaving still exists. By comparing three cultures that continue weaving as a part of their tradition we can see similarities and the differences between them. The reasons that each culture still weaves vary, as do the methods and materials. The desired characteristics of the cloth also vary around the world as each culture values different aesthetics.
Clothing of the renaissance was very unique; the materials often used were sheep’s wool, mohair, plant fibers from the cotton plant, and silk. For color, natural materials became ground colors: brown, white, cream, or black. For shades of brown, red or orange, the Madder root was used. Embroidery included running, chain stitches, or a buttonhole. Dangling jewelry and tassels added color and movement to many of the costumes worn at that time. Given that amount of water wastage, I feel that people should opt for sustainable fashion clothes. Most people may be hesitant to try something so novel, so green. Therefore, I feel the fashion house should educate the public about the many benefits of sustainable fashion
The main problem which was needed to overcome was the selection of the fabric. Due to sustainable principle, I tried best to find the most sustainable fabrics; however, it was full of challenge. 100% silk organza, 100% silk taffeta and 100% Merino wool which were essential in my project were hard to discover in the fabric market in the UK. After consideration, I decided to order these expensive fabrics from China and finally sorted out the problem.
In conclusion, the research has realized that sustainable fashion is among the developing project perspective and movement of sustainability. The project has the main goal of establishing an arrangement, which can be continued for the foreseeable future in terms of conservationism and social liability. It was noted that all the products made are developed with much consideration to the environmental and social influence all through its overall lifetime encompassing its carbon imprint. The research went further in discussing some components of sustainable fashion including fibre, which includes the employment of ecologically friendly resources such as bamboo, organic carbon as well as hemp.
