The information that people might use as a cultural and induvial prediction of me is they usually don’t think that I’m Native American and they mistake me for being Hispanic, they would think of me as quiet, mean, beautiful and young lady because I look younger than my age. Their accuracy and impressions of me would be half accurate because- I’m Native American, very outspoken and could be sarcastic at times, I am quiet at times unless I’m comfortable around you, I look mean but I’m truly a kind hearted induvial, I’m very beautiful and like to participate in my culture and tradition as much as possible. The impression of me is real, I don’t believe in being fake, being fake gets you nowhere and makes people think of you less of a person. Personally I like to keep things 100 with people as I would want them to be 100 with me, Truth, Honesty, and Respect will get you places in life as oppose to Lies, Disrespect, Dishonesty will get yourself hurt. In my opinion I don’t think
Pages one to sixty- nine in Indian From The Inside: Native American Philosophy and Cultural Renewal by Dennis McPherson and J. Douglas Rabb, provides the beginning of an in-depth analysis of Native American cultural philosophy. It also states the ways in which western perspective has played a role in our understanding of Native American culture and similarities between Western culture and Native American culture. The section of reading can be divided into three lenses. The first section focus is on the theoretical understanding of self in respect to the space around us. The second section provides a historical background into the relationship between Native Americans and British colonial power. The last section focus is on the affiliation of otherworldliness that exist between
Throughout ancient history, many indigenous tribes and cultures have shown a common trait of being hunter/gatherer societies, relying solely on what nature had to offer. The geographical location influenced all aspects of tribal life including, spirituality, healing philosophy and healing practices. Despite vast differences in the geographical location, reports show various similarities relating to the spirituality, healing philosophy and healing practices of indigenous tribal cultures.
The term sovereignty is a broad topic that has many different definitions. The most common definition is a nation or groups ability or right to govern themselves. Sovereignty is a term and idea that goes hand in hand with Native Americans throughout history. Native American tribes were once considered sovereign nation until shortly after the arrival of European settlers. Native Americans lost their sovereignty due to the forceful assimilation into white culture by European settlers. The problem with this is that Native Americans have been in North American, acting as self-governing groups, since the beginning days. What sets Native Americans apart from other “minority groups” is that they have existed as self-governing peoples and are more than a group
Culture is customs, arts, social institutions, and achievements of a particular nation, people, or other social group. It includes behaviors, attitudes, beliefs, values, and norms that is shared by a group of people to sustain their lives. Mexican culture is influenced by their familial ties, gender, religion, location and social class, among other factors. Today life in the cities of Mexico has become similar to that in neighboring United States and Europe, with provincial people conserving traditions more so than the Mexican living in the city. In the United States Mexican includes any person of Puerto
What is culture? Many people ask themselves this question every day. The more you think about it the more confusing it is. Sometimes you start leaning to a culture and then people tell you you’re wrong or they make you feel like a different person because of your culture. I go through this almost every day. Because of the way I was raised I love Mexican rodeo but I was born and raised in Joliet. This can be very difficult trying to understand culture. I live in this huge mix of culture. Culture is personal. People can have many cultures especially in America and because of globalization. Cultural identity is not one or the other, it is not Mexican or American. Cultural identity is an individual relevant thing.
Culture is expressed through a variety of different ways, from clothing styles to lifestyles to faithful traditions. It can also have a deep impact on the viewpoints of those around you, whether negatively or positively. No matter how a person goes about their everyday life, they can rise above the expectations of their culture to change the world around them. Culture does not have to be the basis of every thought, word, or deed of a person.
The environment has proven over time that it has the power to cause change in its inhabitants. Native Americans were not an exception to this common occurrence, as they had to adapt to the changes in the environment that surrounded them. The Europeans came to the “new world” and disrupted the original culture of the land. Native Americans were compelled to assimilate their own traditions and culture to one more fitting of their new surroundings. Their religion was a component that changed drastically into a decline that left it without any of the original rituals, beliefs, and traditions. Some of factors that contributed to this shift in religion are disease, the fur trade, the European tourists, the economy, the Christian missionaries, and

“Perhaps there is no other group in the world that has quite so diverse and rich culture as that of the Native Americans. With their gilded history that is rich in strife, struggle, and triumph, the Native American culture is indeed very colorful” (Bantwal). Native American culture is very diverse and it has a very colorful history. It is extremely diverse and in fact the term Native American is a broad term that is used to cover all Native tribes in America. Throughout history there has been conflict not only among the different tribes but also there was plenty of fighting against the white men. Much of the fighting between the Native Americans and the white men was due to misunderstandings, mistrust, and miscommunication. Many thousands of years ago “the nomadic ancestors of modern Native Americans who hiked over a “land bridge” from Asia to what is now Alaska” (History.com). Once they reached Alaska they slowly spread out across the continent of North America. They spread out and separated into different tribes who all have many of the same core ideas but the main thing that separates them is their location in the country. There are Indians from the plains, the pacific coast, the southwest, and the northeast and different locations also. One main idea that is pretty much the same for each tribe is the closeness and respect they show for the land they live on. The history of the Native Americans as a whole is pockmarked by conflict. The conflicts between the tribes were very common and happened because of land disputes or just because of the close proximity of the tribes. But when the white men entered the picture this is where miscommunication and mistrust came into play. The white men wanted the land that...
Within the United States there is a huge diversity of cultures. Culture is many different things, it is a tradition, it is the values and beliefs passed down from generation to generation, and culture is the identity of any country. Culture helps to identify one cultural group from the other. Although we may live in the same country, city, or state we still differ from one another by the way we dress, our beliefs, language, traditions, music, art, food, religion, and politics.
The men and women of the Sioux have different jobs in their tribe. They do different things, like the men go hunting and protect the tribe and the women make objects for the tribes and cook the food that the men bring in. Man or woman they both have important jobs in the Sioux tribe.
To the Navajo tribe turquoise is a really big important piece of jewelry to them, to them turquoise represents a lot of different things such as happiness, luck and health. Turquoise is one of the most common pieces of jewelry in Native American history a lot of different tribes and people used it, but the Navajo were able to turn the turquoise into beads so they were able to make necklaces out of them. The Navajo tribe would only use the turquoise jewelry for religious rituals. The colors within the turquoise stone were black, white, blue, and green, they were these colors to represent the colors of the natural world. As the Navajo tribe began to get more advanced they would combine silver with their turquoise according to http://www.historyofturquoise.com/navajo-turquoise/ . The Navajo tribe was the first silversmith tribe. Out of all the tribes the Navajo tribe was the first tribe to use turquoise for jewelry pieces. Turquoise is used by many different tribes not just the Navajo tribe. To a lot of different tribes turquoise is more precious than gold, a lot of tribes prefer using turquoise over gold, which I don’t blame them because turquoise is a really pretty stone. The only information that I can find about the Navajo tribe and their jewelry is that they mainly used turquoise for their jewelry with some silver added to it. The Navajo’s would make a lot of different things out of
Cultural competence is a skill essential to acquire for healthcare providers, especially nurses. Cooperating effectively and understanding individuals with different backgrounds and traditions enhances the quality of health care provided by hospitals and other medical facilities. One of the many cultures that nurses and other health care providers encounter is the American Indian or Native American culture. There are hundreds of different American Indian Tribes, but their beliefs and values only differ slightly. The culture itself embodies nature. To American Indians, “The Earth is considered to be a living organism- the body of a higher individual, with a will and desire to be well. The Earth is periodically healthy and less healthy, just as human beings are” (Spector, 2009, p. 208). This is why their way of healing and symbolic items are holistic and from nature.
The Cherokee Indians lived in the southeastern Untied States where current Georgia and South Carolina now reside. They were forced to move to current day Oklahoma during the Trail of Tears conflict. The climate changes was a very important factor for the Cherokee since the changes in temperature affected their ability to hunt and gather for food. Due to the cold weather dear would not come out to eat which hurt the Cherokee people since they used deer for food and clothing. During the 20th century there was an estimated 42,000 Cherokee people living in the Cherokee Nation. This is low due to all the new diseases and laws being forced upon them by the
The Indian Reform program was an initiative by the United States citizens to reform previous policies put in place by the government regarding Native Americans. These policies placed Native Americans onto reservations in the west. Reformers believed there was a corrupt service in the government that was dealing with the Native Americans. Many citizens were sympathetic towards the cause and urged for change. Most believed change needed to come by assimilation of the Native Americans, specifically being that of breaking up reservations and educating them.
