Native American Culture Case Study

In the small town I live in known as Coshocton Ohio 96.9% of the population are of Caucasian origin. A very small part of the population has Native American origins at 0.03%. In this discussion I will discuss the health practices, disparities, and influences of this group. I will also explain how awareness of these perceptions can influence the care I provide for a person of this ethnicity.
There are many different Native American tribes. In order to assess our patient’s individual needs we simply have ask them to explain their traditions and needs. Some may continue to speak their traditional language therefore a translator may be consulted. Communication can be defined as how cultures interact and connect with each other. In Native American culture communication is greatly different than many other cultures. They are quiet individuals that do not show emotions. Talking only occurs with a purpose. Greeting in this culture may begin with a gentle handshake. As stated before eye contact may be considered rude. As a culture they are modest and we should attempt to keep the body covered and not exposed. Native Americans rarely participate in touching or hugs. Healthcare providers should attempt to provide nurses and providers as the same gender as the patient.
Native Americans families include extended families, such as aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents. All of these family members would live together in one household and grandparents would often raise grandchildren. The community is also known as her family. If a family is having a problem so is the community. Elders are shown great respect and often are social leaders.
Native Americans orient themselves to the present, they focus on task in front of them. They do not have a linear time concept, and each member has their own sense when something should take
