The Poisonwood Bible is the story of an evangelical Baptist preacher named Nathan Price who uproots his wife and four daughters from the modern culture of America and moves them to the Kilanga Village in the Belgian Congo as missionaries. He is bullheaded and obstinate in all his ways. His approach is inflexible, unsympathetic, and unaccepting of the culture and customs of the people of Kilanga. Nathan Price exemplifies the words of Romans 2:4 that says, “Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing the goodness of God leads you to repentance?” He did not share the goodness of God, but sought to spread his uncompromising pious agenda. Instead of leading people to God he turned them away.
Price does not seek to understand the people and him and his family are ill prepared to deal with the radically different culture and climate they are now a part of. He overestimates the superiority of his American culture by trying to plant a vegetable garden. He plans to provide for his family and teach the natives about agriculture in order to save them from malnutrition. The garden grows huge but does not bare any fruit because there are no African pollinators for the vegetables from America. Leah says, “But my father needs permission only from the Saviour, who obviously is all in favor of subduing the untamed wilderness for a garden”. His lack of research and preparation showed his arrogance and egotism in trying to subdue the Kilangan people with his Western civilization.
Price is overly consumed and unrelenting in his attempt to baptize the villagers. Mama Tituba, the Price family’s help becomes enraged as she communicates to Price why the villagers are so fearful of being baptized...

This quote reveals Prices inability to convert the Kilanga through his astringent witnessing techniques. It was Price’s intent as a missionary to lead the masses to God. In the end, it was his stubbornness and unwillingness to change that caused him to lose his family. It also resulted in him losing his life after being attacked by angry villagers who blamed him for the deaths of their children in the river. His efforts in leading the village to Christ ended up to be what turned everyone away.
In the novel The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver, Nathan Price takes his wife and four daughters to the Congo to spread Christianity. When the Price family arrives in the Congo, they are the only American family there, and there are few people who speak English. The family feels out of place and unprepared to live in the drastically different village. Rachel is the character that feels cut off from home the most. Rachel’s experience with exile is very hard on her, but in the end, it has a positive impact on her life.

I don’t think I would be if she let me alone, but she comes here with her magnificence and takes the life out of all our poor little things. “The patient or the human that is selected for Wormwood to hopefully damn to hell struggles with his newfound faith in Jesus Christ through small changes that come about his daily life. In “The Poisonwood Bible,” Barbara Kingsolver illuminates on how a rift from one’s homeland and family can simultaneously bring agonizing isolation and an eye opening perspective on life through Leah Price’s character development. As a child exiled away to a foreign country, Leah faces the dysfunction and selfishness of her family that not only separates them from the Congolese, but from each other while she also learns to objectify against tyrants and embrace a new culture.

Guilt is a powerful force in humans. It can be the factor that alters someone's life. On the other hand, forgiveness can be just as powerful. In The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver, her characters-the Price family-travel to Africa on a religious mission. Throughout the novel, the concept of guilt and forgiveness is reflected on multiple occasions. Each character has a different experience with guilt and how it affects them in the end. By structuring The Poisonwood Bible to include five different narrators, Kingsolver highlights the unique guilt and forgiveness to each individual experiences as well expresses the similarities that all humans face with these complex emotions.
The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver is a work of historical fiction. The novel is based the Congo in 1959, while it was still under Belgian control. Nathan Price is a southern Baptist preacher from Bethlehem, Georgia who uproots his family, consisting of wife and three daughters, and takes them on a mission trip to Kilanga. Orleanna Price, Nathan’s wife, narrates the beginning of each book within the novel. Rachel, Leah, Adah, and Ruth May rotate the narration throughout each book. Rachel is the oldest Price child, and high materialistic. She refuses to accept the ways of the Congo, believing that she is better than everyone simply because of where she had her start in life. Leah is the next oldest, and she is a self-proclaimed tomboy. She likes to climb trees and practically worships at the feet of her father. Adah is the handicapped one, with a physical deformity. However, this deformity does not limit her, instead making her the smartest of the Price girls. Ruth May is the baby of the family, and has not yet lost the childhood innocence that she views the world with. Barbara Kingsolver uses a very interesting narrative style in the novel, switching between four narrators between the ages of five and fifteen, who are all female. Kingsolver's use of multiple narrative perspectives serve to amplify life in the Congo during the early 1960s through characterization, religion, and politics.
Throughout a lifetime, many things are gained; experience, wisdom, knowledge, as well as a sure sense of self. But along with all these great things come regret, guilt, and shame of past events. In 1741 a Puritan preacher, Jonathan Edwards, delivered a sermon to a congregation in Enfield, Connecticut. He moved many people and helped them to become saved and trust in Jesus Christ. In “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God”, - which is the name of the sermon by Jonathan Edwards- the author uses each rhetorical appeal to connect with his congregation. The whole purpose of Edwards’ sermon was to try and get all the unsaved men in his congregation to trust in Jesus Christ as their savior and be converted. He was a very persuasive man who successfully reached out to his congregation by digging down deep and coming in contact with many people’s personal lives and making them think long and hard about why they are lucky enough to wake up every morning. In his sermon, Jonathan Edwards uses the three rhetorical appeals- ethical, emotional, and logical- to reach out to his congregation and try and help them to see why they should trust in Jesus Christ.
Living in a society where the fulfillment of dreams is based upon material wealth, the Younger family strives to overcome their hardships as they search for happiness. As money has never been a way of life for the family, the insurance check's arrival brings each person to see the chance that their own dreams can become reality. Whether in taking a risk through buying a "little liquor store" as Walter wishes to do or in -"[wanting] to cure" as Beneatha dreams, the desires of the family depend upon the fate of Mama's check. In the mind of Walter Lee Younger, the check is the pinnacle of all, dominating his thoughts, as he does not wait a second before "asking about money "without" a Christian greeting." He cannot see beyond the fact that he "[wants] so many things" and that only their recently acquired money can bring them about. The idea of money and being able to hold it "in [his] hands" blinds him from the evils of society, as he cannot see that the Willy Harris's of the world will steal a person's "life" without a word to anyone. When money becomes nothing but an illusion, Walter is forced to rethink his values and his family's future, realizing that there is more to living that possessing material riches.

One of the most common and prominent themes of The Pearl is greed. One of the first examples of this is when Kino went to the doctor to beg for treatment, but the doctor responded, "‘Has he any money?’ the doctor demanded. ‘No, they never have money. I, I alone in the world am supposed to work for nothing- and I am tired of it. See if he has any money!’” (Steinbeck 11). Many would consider it unethical to refuse treatment to someone simply because of their poverty. The doctor refusing to cure the ill child shows how greed has corrupted him to the point of having an innocent baby die rather than offering up his services for free. Another early instance of greed was when the news of the pearl “came to the priest walking in his garden, and it put a thoughtful look in his eyes and a memory of certain repairs necessary to the church. He wondered what the pearl would be worth” (Steinbeck 21). Even the people of God, those believed to have the highest morals, became materialistic. He who is supposed to be satisfied with just the love of the lord suddenly hungered for more. After the missionaries receive a letter from the mission president requesting a status report, Price abandons the mission in hope of getting assigned to a mission in Orlando. After Price leaves some of the villagers show interest in the book and ask Cunningham about it. However, Cunningham had never read the Book of Mormon, so he makes stories up, relevant to the villagers, including characters from Star Wars to Lord of the Rings. Price meanwhile, is lost in the desert and is having a “hell” dream, in which is Hitler, Lucifer, Jeffrey Dahmer and others and dancing Starbucks cups. After Jesus calls Price a dick, Price awakes and decides to return to his mission. Price attempts to convert General BFN, but is unsuccessful and is later seen having the Book of Mormon removed from his body.
