The United States Department of Defense is giving NASCAR $80 to $100 million dollars as sponsorship. This is a yearly amount of money being spent for just one NASCAR team. The reason the U.S. Department of Defense does it is to have NASCAR promote their activities and help recruit new people. The U.S. Department of Defense spokesman says that they are getting more recruits and support from these sponsorship, but the U.S. Congress is arguing that there is no tangible proof. The U.S. Congress is trying to pass a bill that forces a cut in the spending on behalf of the Department of Defense. When the U.S. Congress asked why, they said, “But $20 million for one NASCAR team? Have we lost our minds?” (http://www.politico.com, DOD’s NASCAR Spending
Hits Wall). It was also added that this might be a possible reason why the economy is declining faster and faster.
The National Football League (NFL) and NASCAR thrive on sponsors and vice versa. An NFL game is by far the most watched single game event in the country and gaining popularity exponentially worldwide. Their championship, the Super Bowl, is arguably the most watched television program in that particular year. In NASCAR, the Daytona 500 is their “Super Bowl” and is a very large event in its own right. Corporations all over the world jump on these mega advertising vehicles with the hope that their name is popularized which will result in profitability. In many cases, most of those who do buy airtime during NFL games, the Super Bowl, and during the major NASCAR races are very visible names and products that we already know about. Most of the time, these companies are trying to market new products or products that have been enhanced.
Nascar…. When you think of moonshine you think of the hillbillies in overalls fireing up grand daddys still in the b ack forty. It may come to a shock to you when you learn that nascars the billion dollor enterprise with 100,000 cars that are engineered to be as fast as they can be. Its hard to belive it all started from shine runners. During the great depression millions of gallons of shine were in need of distribution. This is where the ridge runners came into play. The shiners needed a way to get there shine from the stills to the stash houses…. The cops at the time had stock cars and if you could out run them then you wre free. You can only get in trouble if you are caught in the act….. the backwoods shiners started to build cars that would out run the cops. This was the beginning of nascar…..
The green flag drops on the first race in The National Dirt Racing Association(NDRA). It doesn’t matter where people go, on some little road in a small town, people will find a small dirt track. The speedways are mostly always located in city areas where a large amount of people live. After a weekend of racing the teams head to the shop to fix the car up again. Despite the fact, that racing had been around since before 1978; whenever Mr. Robert Smawley introduced NDRA, and later Mr. Bill France introduced NASCAR, more people paid attention to the sport of racing.
“Lobbying groups would be able to finance lawmakers' travel as long as those funds were channeled through a nonprofit foundation. And almost all banned perks would still be permitted if given in the context of a campaign fundraiser(Arkush).” The watchdogs almost seem pointless if there are loopholes to allow lobbyist to continue to abuse corporation’s like Jack Abramoff did to the Indian tribes. Through loopholes lobbyist and lobbying groups are still allowed to take lawmakers on golf junkets due to their nonprofit foundation affiliations, even though travel is banned, it is acceptable because of the nonprofit foundation affiliations. Restrictions on lobbying need to be tightened even more due to the fact of the loopholes allowing lobbyist to continue to waste money on bribing lawmakers and other government officials.
NASCAR was formed by William France, Sr., who was an auto mechanic from Washington D.C. The current CEO is Brian France who is the grandson of Bill France. NASCAR headquarters is in Daytona Beach, Florida and it has several offices throughout the United States and some in Mexico and Canada. Before Bill France started NASCAR, racing was a very dishonest business where the promoters often stole money from the drivers. France believed that if racing became an organization with rules it would become an honest type of business. In December 1947, France asked many drivers and promoters to meet in Daytona Beach, Florida to create racing rules. NASCAR was created on February 21, 1948 and starting out racing on a track that was half sand and half asphalt. The track was called Daytona Beach and was located in Florida. (Jordan) I feel that NASCAR is a great sport for the fans and anyone else who likes racing in general. NASCAR has an interesting history and is still fun to learn about today.
People who have participated in racing for the past century, have never been universally accepted as athletes. The drivers, especially those in the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) prove this misconception as incorrect with their intense training and stellar performances. Drivers on social media, assert that they are athletes, contradicting other sports stars who insist that they are not. The drivers in NASCAR and all forms of racing deserve to be given the respect of their fellow athletes in other sports. NASCAR drivers are seasoned athletes because of their training and tough race conditions that they encounter every week on the track.
WASHINGTON — When American Pharoah, the colt with a thunderous gallop, became the first Triple Crown winner in nearly four decades, he couldn’t have had better timing.
In 1905, the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) was founded by President Roosevelt to help establish rules that would help cut down on the rising amount of sports injuries and deaths that were occurring. Ever since the beginning of the NCAA, it has been classified as a non-profit organization and all the money the company makes goes back into paying the employees and improving the organization. This includes the equipment the players use, researching for better safety, employing new people to help expand the organization to new sports, etc (Investing). People are starting to think that the NCAA should re-evaluate how they are spending their money and that they should begin to
A spokesman for McDonald's, Jack Greenberg, believed that McDonald's were a "unique company, capable of bringing the fun and excitement of the world's premiere sporting event to 43 million customers every day. " However the real reason behind this sponsor was chosen as it was offering the Olympic Committee millions of dollars in sponsorship. McDonald's, as an example, wanted to exploit the Games, using it as an advertising tool, to imply their company has a clean, reliable and idealistic image like that of the Olympics. The Salt Lake Organising Committee received approximately US$ 1,390.5 million from Olympic marketing programmes, but a question asked by many is Where exactly does all the money come from?
Despite that number, the NCAA had expenses amounting $908,600,000.” (Strachan) That only leaves them a profit of $80.5 million. “More than 460,000 NCAA student-athletes – more than ever before – compete in 23 sports every year.” (NCAA) If you take the profit and divide it between those student athletes you get $175. The so called “cash cow,” that is the NCAA is not producing in excess. Should the NCAA be punished for having a good business model? The NCAA, along with college program officials created the set of rules that all NCAA sports teams
Money is a big deal to most people in this world. Putting money in the right place is something our nation has been struggling with in the past few years. In 2006, “...almost $17 billion will fly into NASA's coffers with about $5.3 billion dedicated to space exploration” (Source E). Giving 17 billion dollars to a company is a large sum of money. Only 31 percent of that sum will be put into space exploration. Space exploration is important, but giving NASA 17 billion dollars is far too high. There are other important things some of that money could be put towards, like our national debt...
The money given to the athletes could be used for more probable causes. Recently Alex Rodriguez of the Texas Rangers signed a contract for 252 million dollars over a span of 10 years. This is enough money to feed the nation's poor for a year or to provide a lot more housing and shelters for the homeless. Others could benefit from the millions being wasted on these athletes. Not because the players don’t earn the money but because it could just be better spent on more important issues in our communities.
"Money makes the world go 'round." Sports could not exist without the presence of money. You have high paid athletes asking for multi-million dollar contacts, while at the same time you have doctors not even making close to that amount. There are corporations buying out sports teams, buying stadiums, and buying everything that has to do with sports. Someone may ask why they do this. Sports are one of the most profitable industries in the world. Everyone wants to get their hand on a piece of the action. Those individuals and industries that spend hundreds of millions of dollars on these sports teams are hoping to make a profit, but it may be an indirect profit. It could be a profit for the sports club, or it could be a promotion for another organization (i.e. Rupert Murdoch, FOX). The economics involved with sports has drastically changed over the last ten years. In the United States, we spend about 13% of all money on sports and entertainment. Sports has obviously done its job; entertained and drained money out of our pockets.
A recent article in Readers Digest estimates that most Americans spend at least 13% of their income on sporting events and sport related products. Sports has entertained American people and drained money out of their pockets making sporting events an arena of pure economic activity. It has been proven that Americans will purchase tickets to attend sporting events, but this alone does not create enough revenue to keep sports teams profitable.
Formula One Racing Formula One racing, or F1, is known to be the most prestigious type of auto racing in the world. Unfortunately, in the United States F1 racing is not nearly as popular as other motorsports such as Nascar. On a typical Sunday afternoon if one were to flip channels on the television, Nascar would most likely be airing on a major station. Furthermore, if one were to watch the race he
