Narrative: On the morning of December 7th 1941 at 7:55am (Hawaiian time) the first of two waves of Japanese aircraft began their attack on the stationary U.S Pacific fleet moored at Pearl Harbor, Oahu, Hawaii. This first wave of 183 planes, launched from the north of Oahu on Japanese aircraft carriers was an all out attack of the Fleet and military not specifically aiming for one certain type of vessel. Although a U.S radar base detected the incoming planes on the north of the island this post was in training mode and it was thought that the blips were the arrival of B-17 bombers. When the Planes arrived they used the element of surprise to there advantage and had slow but effective torpedo bombers attack battle ships from the west hitting the USS Helena, USS Utah and USS Raleigh, all on the west side of Ford Island. From the east, torpedo planes came in and hit the USS California, the USS Nevada, USS Oklahoma and USS West Virginia located on the east side of Ford Island, while dive bombers attacked air bases such as Hickam Field, the largest, and Wheeler field, the main air base. While the torpedo planes were being used in the first wave attacks, additional bombs were dropped on "Battleship Row", and out of 90 ships anchored at pearl harbor the primary targets were the 8 battleships anchored there with 7 of them being anchored at battleship row. Battle ship row was along the southeast shore of the island while the USS Pennsylvania lay in dry dock across the channel. After just the first few minutes of the attack all of the battle ships near Ford Island had taken a bomb and/or torpedo hit from the Japanese. The USS West Virginia sank very quickly along with the USS Oklahoma, which actually turned turtle before it sank. The Japanese Americans along the west coast were then sent to internment camps for the rest of the war. This attack drew a divided nation together and signs of a US war effort soon began. The US were slowly drifting towards entering the war but it wasn’t until this attack that opposition was crushed. Almost overnight there were response calls to remember Pearl harbour/Remember the 7th of December. Historians overall say that the attack on pearl harbour doomed the Empire of Japan in that “It waked the sleeping giant”, which lead to the start up of the US industrial and military capability which once mobilized would be able to pour over whelming resources into both the pacific and Atlantic Battle fronts. This in turn was one of the factors that lead to an allied victory. Empathy Bibliography
