In J.D. Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye, the main character Holden Caufield believes that innocence is corrupted by society. He exposes his self-inflicted emotional struggles as he is reminiscing the past. For Holden, teenage adolescence is a complicated time for him, his teenage mentality in allows him to transition from the teenage era to the reality of an adult in the real world. As he is struggling to find his own meaning of life, he cares less about others and worries about how he can be a hero not only to himself but also to the innocent youth. As Holden is grasping the idea of growing up, he sets his priorities of where he belongs and how to establish it. As he talks about how ‘phony’ the outside world is, he has specific recollections that signify importance to his life and he uses these time and time again because these memories are ones that he wont ever let go of. The death of his younger brother Allie has had a major impact on him emotionally and mentally. The freedom of the ducks in Central Park symbolize his ‘get away’ from reality into his own world. His ideology of letting kids grow up and breaking the chain loose to discover for themselves portrays the carrousel and the gold ring. These are three major moments that will be explored to understand the life of Holden Caufield and his significant personal encounters as he transitions from adolescence into manhood.

His geometry teacher Mr. P told him he had potential and that he should get off the Rez and go to college. Junior decided to move from Wellpinit to Reardan an all white school. Junior got into a fight with Rowdy because he was leaving but he went anyway. Since Junior’s been at Reardan he has made some friends who have supported him. At the winter formal dance he didn't have any money for breakfast after the dance but Roger offered to pay. His friends from Reardan have helped out with a lot. With giving rides from school and dealing with death of family. “Reardan is the opposite of the Rez” (Alexie 56) What Junior means by that is that people on the Rez don’t go to college or get well paying jobs. Junior made the decision to go to Reardan and become something, hopefully graduate and go to college. Friends will stay until the end, “I look at it now, years later, and I still can’t believe we did it” (Alexie 226) This quote is a memory of Rowdy and Junior when they were younger, When they climbed the tallest tree. Imagine waking up on a normal day, in your normal house, in your normal room. Imagine if you knew that that day, you would be taken away from your normal life, and forced to a life of death, sickness, and violence. Imagine seeing your parents taken away from you. Imagine watching your family walk into their certain death. Imagine being a survivor. Just think of the nightmares that linger in your mind. You are stuck with emotional pain gnawing at your sanity. These scenerios are just some of the horrific things that went on between 1933-1945, the time of the Holocaust. This tragic and terrifying event has been written about many times. However, this is about one particularly fascinating story called The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne.
It was the day of May 23. The flowers were blossoming and the birds were chirping. The trees were swaying in unison with the cool breeze. The kids were coming out of school, happy it was their last day, laughing and playing as their parents were talking. Most of the students were talking about the run and were wondering what they ran the mile in. Henry was not wondering, he was running home to drop off his backpack and start running.
It was an eventful summer, or you could say a summer with one major event. July sixteenth in particular was that one day that stood out bolder than the rest. It has been over a decade since the time I started investing my summers with sports practices and games. Each year, I took it up a notch. I didn’t really know how I felt about sports. When I was younger, I continually nurtured my skills for a future I didn't even see. Much like how I used to always read. The vocabulary, grammar, and structure I gained knowledge from reading didn't seem to matter back then. Until sixth grade, I really didn’t have a spark that motivated me to do anything. I believe the exact phrase my friend Emily said was, “I will teepee your house every single night until you decide to try out for Citadel.” This Citadel travel soccer team is what gave me better sense of who I was.

His dad works really hard to put him through school all while paying for his mom’s medical bills. Sean heads out the front door, stopping outside to lock it. Sean decides to walk to school since it’s only a couple blocks. As Sean approaches the big brick building, he is filled with a sense of dread and anxiety, but all that quickly fades when he sees his best friends – Brandon, Joseph, Bob, and Andy – waving at him. Sean waves back and walks quickly towards them.

Erway stood in the shadow that the old warehouse doorway cast against the rising sun. He hoped the bus wouldn't take much longer because although the building sheltered him against the wind, it was cold and snowing. Today, like most other school days, he got up early so he could lift weights and play a game of basketball in the gym with his friends. It was quiet on North Avenue this early in the morning. In the afternoons, sometimes it was so loud you could shout and no one would hear. As he waited, Erway tried to remember what he had done when he got up this morning. Only forty-five minutes had passed but it was already a blur. He remembered going to the bathroom, but that was about it. The hunger in his stomach reminded him that he hadn't eaten anything since last night. I'll get somethin' when I get to school, Erway thought.
