The process for deciding on a product was easy. I simply thought to myself, why not volunteer so that it could go on my resume and then also can count as an grade for my capstone. My capstone product is pretty simple. I volunteer at the St.Louis County Animal Care and Control, when ever I have the free time. So far I spent 12 hours there. It will be super easy for me to get 8 more hours. I don’t do much there which sucks because i’m about to get my vet assistant certification in a few months, which means I know way more about animals then probably the other volunteers do. A typical day volunteering at the animal shelter is I park my truck, sign in, and grab my name tag (now I don’t have one since I lost it and too scared to ask for another one). …show more content…
I scan the room to see what new dogs they have, then head to the large dog kennel room. To scan each cage all together usually takes me 7 minutes. While i’m greeting the dogs I usually pick out which dogs seem calm enough for me to take out outside. I then begin to pick the calmest dog/ the dog who didn't get taken out, grab a leash then mark the time I’m taking the dog out. As soon as I head to the dog cage and the other dogs begin to see me wrapping the dog head through the leash, other dogs begin to go crazy. When all 35 dogs are barking because they are jealous, the dog that I thought was so calm takes off and goes wild. I have to hold a tight grip on the dogs, simply because we are going through the small dog room, then the looby. When I walk dogs in the lobby I rather have them looking like they actually know how to walk on a leash. So therefore I simply make the dog walk side by side, reinforce the good behaviors and correct the bad behaviors. I walk the dogs until I feel like they been out for awhile, pick up the poop, then repeat this process over and over again, until I’m ready to go
Service dogs are a low risk treatment, that can replace dangerous medication and expensive devices. For a purebred service dog is $20,000, however there are non profit organizations that provide service dogs at a much lower cost, but there is usually a long wait list (“Costs”). ASDA (Autism Service Dogs of America) sets a donation goal of $13,500 for every approved family, which is always achieved. Another option is buying the dog from a breeder and paying for the training and accessories. If a puppy is purchased from a dog breeder for around $2,500, in two years time the dog would have costed around $5,200 dollars. The rest of the $ 2,700 comes from vet bills, service gear, training expenses, food, treats, and toys. (“Service”) Getting a dog from a rescue center will cost about the same amount because usually vet bills and training expenses are incrases. However in the long run the owner is most likely to spend more money on a rescue dog, because they often have more issues, physically and mentally which cause them to wear out faster. There is no health insurance that cover service animals. Service dogs however do replace the nasty side effects of some medication, and devices that won't provide companionship. Although the average hearing aid costs $4,000, hearing aides need replaced as the person grows, and need repairs as well, putting the total
There are dog-training techniques you can follow so that you can handle it easily such as dog whispering, reward training and clicker training.Knowing these techniques all will make Effective Dog Training easier to manage.
As I have progressed through this class, my already strong interest in animal ethics has grown substantially. The animal narratives that we have read for this course and their discussion have prompted me to think more deeply about mankind’s treatment of our fellow animals, including how my actions impact Earth’s countless other creatures. It is all too easy to separate one’s ethical perspective and personal philosophy from one’s actions, and so after coming to the conclusion that meat was not something that was worth killing for to me, I became a vegetarian. The trigger for this change (one that I had attempted before, I might add) was in the many stories of animal narratives and their inseparable discussion of the morality in how we treat animals. I will discuss the messages and lessons that the readings have presented on animal ethics, particularly in The Island of Doctor Moreau, The Dead Body and the Living Brain, Rachel in Love, My Friend the Pig, and It Was a Different Day When They Killed the Pig. These stories are particularly relevant to the topic of animal ethics and what constitutes moral treatment of animals, each carrying important lessons on different facets the vast subject of animal ethics.
Although George Orwell’s Animal Farm was created in order to mimic individuals as well as occurrences that took place during the Russian Revolution period, it is still possible to gain a comprehensive understanding of the text without a past knowledge of history through the exploitation of human nature’s imperfections. Following the publishment of his novel, Orwell confirmed that his goal in writing this fable was to expose the wrongdoing of the Soviet Union as well as the treachery of the true ideas of the Revolution. Nonetheless, there have been several other examples of events such as the French Revolution that can effortlessly be contrasted against components of the allegory. However, we need not to dig no deeper than to the fundamental faults in human nature to witness the catastrophic consequences that attributes such as hierarchy, propaganda and betrayal have on today’s society.

Through the conventional use of pathos, ethos, and logos, Janette Turner Hospital conveys the psychological and political implications of a modern terrorist attack, which ultimately results in loss and despair.
ANIMAL FARM About 80 per-cent of all the animals on Animal Farm completely followed the seven commandments. The other 20 per-cent of the animals would rarely follow all the rules and they were often treated like a piece of dirt. All the animals on Animal Farm were treated differently according to their social status, where in today’s society everyone should treat everyone equally. The characters in Animal Farm had many diverse characteristics, some of the animals were powerful, stupid, and sneaky First of all, Napoleon is a huge Berkshire boar and he clearly is the most powerful of all the animals. He was able to take complete leadership of the farm because he secretly trained the dogs to attack Snowball. George Orwell writes, “ ‘Never mind the milk, comrades!’ cried Napoleon, placing himself in front of the buckets. ‘That will be attended to, the harvest is more important’ (817).&nb describe Napoleon as a leader, “ ‘long live Comrade Napoleon’ ” (846). All the animals on the farm (no matter what Napoleon did to them) would treat him as a powerful leader and whatever he said they would do. Often Orwell stirs up controversy about the rebellion, “ ‘forward in the name of the rebellion. ‘Long live Animal Farm!’ ‘Long live Comrade Napoleon!’ ‘Napoleon is always right.’
Picture blind or deaf not knowing where you’re walking. Not knowing when a baby cries or a smoke alarm rings. But then picture having a helping companion like a dog to help you, so you can have an idea of where you are going, or a mini hose to help you build up your muscles. But they’re not the only helpers, for example a capuchin monkey they are very intelligent so they can do many things for you. As you can see my opinion is that, we should allow other animals in public spaces like, capuchin monkeys or even a snake. My first reason why we should allow more animals are that there are many things that other animals can do to help that others can’t, for example a capuchin monkey has thumbs so it can pick up tools and other things, but unlike the capuchin monkey a dog or a mini horse do not possess that ability because they don't have thumbs. My second reason why we should allow more animals is that many people have allergies and can be allergic to horses or dogs but snakes
Out of all leadership opportunities I have had, one stands out to me the most. The biggest event I was the leader of, was when I was in charge of the camping at Marquette Kennel Club's 2016 AKC dog show. I volunteered to be the the leader of camping, because in years past it had been a mess for the Marquette Kennel Club, and the exhibitors. Exhibitors in the past never made reservations, so when I took charge I decided that having camping reservations on the entry form was crucial. It was a lot of work organizing all of the reservations, and dealing with people but surprisingly I enjoyed it. I took joy in knowing that that would be the largest year yet for camping, and that maybe next year there could be even more people. The three characteristics
As the sun came into view, I rushed out of bed and into the living room. My dogs followed me like a pack of wolves. I immediately lead them outside the back door where there is a fenced area, so they could use the restroom. Once they finished their business outside; they ran up the stairs and into the house. Sometimes my dogs are excessively loud with their mouths. Whenever they are out of dog food or need more water they let me know by barking. It is one of their ways of communication. The way they stare into my eyes with joy is another form of communication. Taking care of a dog is not difficult; however, they do take immense responsibility. Now that I know how much responsibility it takes to own a dog, I can use it in the future.
When I was three years old, I spent my summer in a pond by my home chasing frogs and snakes. When I was five years old, my mother found me sleeping under a mare with her foal. When I was fifteen I spent my spare time working for a family friend’s thoroughbred farm. However, my first love for animal care was born when I was nineteen when I first held an owl. I was an extremely fortunate child to grow up in the Maine wilderness as I did, learning to marvel at the raw beauty of nature at a young age. I attended a nature themed summer camp every year throughout my youth, learning about the sciences of soil and water systems and how they impacted the animals around them. I took every opportunity to immerse myself in animals at any opportunity, from
Animals are so often forgotten when it comes to the many different levels of basic rights. No, they can’t talk, or get a job, nor can they contribute to society the way humans can. Yet they hold a special place in their owners’ hearts, they can without a doubt feel, show their different emotions, and they can most definitely love. In recent years there has been a massive increase in animal rights awareness, leading to a better understanding and knowledge in the subject of the humane treatment of animals. Where do humans draw the line between the concern of equality, and simple survival?
Animal domestication has influenced history and has had a positive impact on people of the past. Domestication can be understood as the process in which animal species have come into contact with people and has greatly changed how the animals live. Animal domestication didn’t just happen overnight; it was a complex progression that took many years. Domestication caused social, political, cultural and economic changes (Mammals and humans: Domestication and Commensals).
Animal Cruelty has many forms, many reasons and most importantly many victims. It is a growing problem in today’s society. Many people may wonder why people abuse animals. The thought is simple, however the answer is a little more complex, there are three main types of animal cruelty. The three reasons are as follows: unintentional, intentional, and cruel intentions. I will discuss each one in more detail.
