Life is beautiful. I am often unaware of how compelling a moment in my life is until afterwards. I was unaware of how greatly a brief outing to Dairy Queen with my grandpa would affect my entire life until after he passed away. I learned how crucial it is to be fearless, show love, and find time for those we love after eating some Dairy Queen ice cream in my new, white Mazda with my grandpa. In roughly 2008, Grandpa teasingly told me that as soon as I receive my driver’s license, I must drive him to Dairy Queen and pay for both of our treats. My 8-year old young self pondered with how I could ever afford to buy two Dairy Queen ice cream treats. I set my treat down in my cup holder, so I could drive back to his home. My mouth was watering for a spoonful of the creamy vanilla ice cream. Grandpa was enjoying his chocolate ice cream and full of gratefulness, but I think he was enjoying our conversation more. By the time we got back to his home, he still had the majority of his ice cream cone left. I peeled off the paper wrapper with the Dairy Queen logo from his cone. We sat in the car and continued to talk about school and football as we both devoured our treats. I learned my second lesson from Grandpa here. I learned to show unconditional love to those we care for through asking about their lives. Grandpa liked learning about how life was going for others over his own. The majority of our conversation was about me. I have grown to realize I have the same passion Grandpa had to invest in conversations with others. The third lesson I learned from my grandpa was to find time for those we love. I am so incredibly thankful I had the opportunity to eat Dairy Queen ice cream with my grandpa in my new car before he left us. I know that I would have regretted not finding the time to fulfill this promise with him. We never know when we will lose someone special in our lives. For this reason, always make time for those you love: take off work, skip a day of school, whatever it takes to find that freedom. Because one day
