Being a first generation college student has been my biggest struggle in life. For years, I was told to attend Allen Community College before any big changes of course I didn’t listen. For years I was told I wouldn’t last in a big university, I have been told I will be unprepared and behind. I have been told that three out of five first generations students do not complete a degree. Being told something isn’t possible is a hard thing to deal with.
As a small child all I could dream about was the future; freedom, a family, a job but that all starts with college. When I was in the seventh grade an organization came to my school called Talent Search. I learned that this group helps students learn more about college and will take students for free to visit colleges across Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Colorado and so many more. Upon hearing about this group I knew I needed to join so I could someday have all the things I desire. letters and pamphlets about various colleges; Technical colleges, Junior and community colleges and a few Universities. As I learned more and more about colleges I grew more and more excited for my new adventures. About the ninth grade, I started to know that I wanted to go into fine arts. First, it was theater, then a singer, then, photographer and eventually it traveled to graphic design. As I traveled looking for colleges with excellent fine arts programs I came across The Art Institute in Kansas City. That was the one, that’s where I wanted to go. About 11th grade I started really doing my research on this university and at the time I didn’t worry about cost, I could pay it off eventually. I made contact with the institute and they sent me tons of information on their programs. As I talked with my Talent Search advisor she informed me on debt and how awful it is. When I talked to my parents I realized, I couldn’t expect them to pay for my college. Sadly the cost outweighs the benefits. I couldn’t afford $31,000 a year. As I traveled on to senior year, time was running short and I was in pure panic attack mode.
What was I to do if I didn’t know where I was going? Since I didn’t take any credit hours from a college while I was in high school I was granted a $10,000 scholarship that is split between two years. The only thing I had to do was attend a university. I started cracking down on colleges and prices. After being accepted into Fort Hays State University, I realizing how far the college was a total of five hours, I decided to look closer. I looked at Pittsburg State, but they didn’t have as strong as a fine arts program as Wichita State University. When my decision was final I went to my counselor and asked her what I needed to do after being accepted to Wichita State University. She helped me as much as she could and after realizing I was a first generation college student she told me I would have a lot of
struggles. I pondered on this periodically, was the counselor warning me, suggesting me not to go straight to a university or was she just giving me friendly advice? After arriving at Wichita State University, I was overwhelmed with life. Being the only student from Humboldt High School to attend I didn’t know anyone here, I had no one to talk to. However, now that we are starting the school year it hasn’t been so bad. I have made some new friends and everyone in Wichita has been friendly to me so far. At first I was intimidated and know I know there was nothing to be worried about.
The documentary, First Generation, follows four first generation college students who try and balance the hardships of working, sports, being part of a lower socioeconomic status and handling the challenges of learning how to apply and cover the cost of hefty college tuitions. In this paper, I will discuss barriers that some students experienced, the benefits of attainting a college education as a first generation student and some of the challenges individuals faced once they were accepted into college.
While first-generation college students are over half of all students in postsecondary education, exclusionary practices block their admittance into elite institutions. The outliers who receive admittance to the Ivory Tower may think they have made it—that their American Dream and long-held belief in the meritocratic ethos has finally paid off. Instead, they are confronted with educational stratification and social reproduction that was stacked against them long before they received the piece of parchment granting them access. The onerous task of navigating through unfamiliar academic and social situations often results in leaving. Can first-generation college students learn how to activate, manage, and accumulate social and cultural capital to navigate elite universities?
So what can other first generation college students do to avoid what has happened to Sarah? The answer lies in directing a passion towards learning and education in students and their families that will build self-motivation and avoid the negative predispositions of being the first in the family to attend college. While Sarah has not been attending the University of Miami for too long, her experiences thus far have given her a very good understanding of her position in this academic community, and nevertheless, gives a representation of first-year, first-generation college students. Sarah is only one person though and may not be fully representative of the population of first generation college students, but as a member of this community, Sarah’s input is essential to the ideas and views of the students in this group.

According to Everett (2015), the term ‘first- generation college student’ was first coined in the 1960s in order to regulate student eligibility for federally financed programs to aid students from low-income households.
First generation college students are students who comprise a distinct minority within most institutions of higher learning. These groups of students are the first generation of students in their family lineage to attend a college or university (Allwood, 1966). Due to the lack of family guidance in navigating through the college experience, first generation students face an array of obstacles upon entering the realm of higher education. These students are less likely to obtain their bachelor degree due to finance, family support and retention, all which ultimately limit their college experience. Not only do these students experience issues migrating through high school into college, they also lack the necessary resources some students need to achieve higher standards. For instance financial assistance, mentorship, and other motivating factors that can help a student grow into a professional.
Most first generation college students are significantly older than the average, approximately 24 year of age (Pascarella et. al 2004). The surrounding low-income environments that many of these students are raised around can explain this late age. This financial pressure can also explain another category of first generation students, preparation (Chen & Carroll, 2005). These students are often less prepared to enter the college life. They have not been exposed to the necessary preparation needed to succeed on college admissions tests and furthermore don’t meet the performance requirements that universities and institutions require. If failure ever becomes an option, reconsider your choices and work out a plan where it is not even considered. Finding groups that help first generation students will help you tenfold. Students do not have to face the learning curve alone. Tutors and professors understand that being a first generation student is difficult even if the university doesn’t have anything to help. On top of not knowing about college and dealing with a learning curve, first generation students also have a fear of becoming unrecognizable to their own families. The development of two separate identities can often make it difficult for these students to branch out and learn. The fear of becoming someone else and not knowing can lead students to living in a shell where they are not only excluding themselves from others, but also from learning and being educated. In my opinion, colleges should recognize that being a first –generation student and seeking for help is not easy. They have hard challenges to overcome and may choose to remain invisible to not cause disturb. Society puts too much pressure on high school students to attend a 4-year college right after graduation. Though this is an attainable goal for some, a great majority of students are not fully prepared for the demands of college. 4-year schools require an incredible amount of maturity and preparation, leaving very little room for mistakes. In the 21st century, if an individual decides to make a major commitment or resolution, they have the utmost support from their peers and family members. However, when a first-generation college student decides on furthering their education, the dearest people close to the student seem to disappear. Linda Banks-Santilli (2015) claims that first-generation students apply to a single college and without the help of a parent (para. 13). Although Banks-Santilli does not say so directly, she assumes that the students can not afford multiple application fees and the students are unsure on how to determine which college is a good fit, as their parents have not taken them on a college tour.
