Learning How to Swim
Learning to swim always seem to be a difficult skill for me. The difficult part was overcoming my fears of a potential drowning, never learning the skill or technique properly. The importance of learning how to swim will increase my fate, confidence, and stamina. Swimming is consistently among top public recreational activities, especially during the summer. First, we focused on breathing techniques which was exhaling through your nose/mouth as soon as you inhale; it was a difficult critical task. Next, we learned the locomotion and range of how many limbs should maneuver in the water; after locomotion and range, we entered the water. Once in the water I began to loosen with fate of learning to swim with the conference of conquering my quest. During my swimming session I reminisced of the saying, “Practice makes perfect.” As I continued to learn I decided swimming will be a daily activity and workout for healthier living. As the days went by, I saw an ad in the newspaper for free swimming lessons. So I called and asked my coworker if she wanted to take swimming lessons. She replied “Yes sure.” We finally got enrolled in the swimming classes. Classes are from 5pm- 8pm Monday- Wednesday. The instructor was very nice. He took up a lot of time with his new swimmers. He also wanted the new beginners to be on time during every lesson. He taught us a lot, in general, about swimming that a lot of us were unaware. He taught us several things as well. He taught us how to float, swim, and how to swim under the water. Also, he taught us to never get
The first practice was at 5 a.m. and the night before I couldn't sleep. My mind would keep wondering what would happen, was I supposed to be wearing my bathing suit, what were my teammates going to be like. When it came time to go to practice I was shaking the whole way. Soon after I learned that my fears should have not been focused on such silly things now. If anything swim really helped me face them head on. With so much change going with swim I got used to this fear. My family and friends were also a great succor. Even though they probably didn't know that it was helping me. Imagine that it’s the closest swim meet of the season, and your team is losing by a mere two points. You know that your race could pull your team ahead, but you’re starting to doubt yourself. As the starting signal goes off, you dive in and hear your team explode into cheers. This gives you a boost of confidence and you pull ahead, slamming into the finish and out touching your opponents. With a smile on your face, you proudly turn to your teammates who are all screaming and jumping around. Joining a summer swim team ensures a summer filled with fun, and being with a community of supportive and happy people every day. Swim practice is also an amazing workout with serious health benefits, and can even help lower the risk of heart disease. Many people may be afraid of the commitment of practices and meets, but in reality, practices are not mandatory and are actually very fun, and meets are optional.

They put me in swimming lessons, and I kept wanting to go back, over and over. Eventually, they put me in competitive swimming, on the Manitoba Marlins, when I was around 12, a fairly late age to enter competitive swimming. Many of the kids that I was swimming with had been on the team since they were 6 or 7. I showed up ready to have some fun, and was absolutely crushed by everyone. I went home devastated and crying, never wanting to swim again. I can vividly remember my parents sitting down and telling me that I could quit now, or I could work every day to follow my passion.
The sport of swimming began changing my life at age four. I won every time I touched the water, but I was unaware of my true talent.

Practices were everyday, Monday through Friday and sometimes on Saturdays, and consisted of countless sets of sprinting, kicking and pulling. The only thing that kept us stable during practice was counting down the time on the clock, “Just thirty more minutes, and I can relax for another twenty hours.” From there I would go home in time to shower and finish homework. This pool is my soul, and the slight, gentle waves are the beating of my heart. I stand on the deck looking down at the clear, calm water, and raise my hands above my head. I dive into the water, smooth and straight like an arrow. I enter the water without a splash, and glide underwater, feeling the cool water on my skin, and the scent of chlorine in the air. I feel powerful, immortal, and completely at peace.
It was finally time to swim. I finally came up with a plan and decided to swim in the deep side of the pool even though I didn’t know how to swim. I knew it would work but I was also scared. As I walked to the swimming pool, everyone laughed at me again for wearing a speedo. I dived into the deep side of the pool and noticed everyone was staring at me in amazement. Then I swam up and hung onto the side of the pool. Everyone was shocked and puzzled. Even the girl I liked looked surprised.
Swimming has been my whole life, since I jumped into the pool for the very first time. I loved every aspect of swimming from the adrenaline running through my body during my races and getting to spend even more time with my friends and my sister, and the stress of big meets coming up in the schedule. Except everything didn't go according to plan after the first day of school when I got home and I saw my parents sitting by my sister on the coach and my sister was crying.
