In the summer before my freshman year of high school, me and my friends decided to try something new: the sport of lacrosse. We really enjoyed the game and we wanted to start our own team. At first, we only had five people committed to the sport, including me. Each of us gave up countless hours of our free time to recruit more people to play this unfamiliar sport. We chased people down in the hallways at school, used basically any social media platform known to man, and played at the high school until people started asking us what we were doing. After our tireless efforts of spreading the news, we had enough players to field a team. Before we knew it, we had established the first ever lacrosse team in our small town.

This really hits home for me because I know this program will last for years to come, and my younger brother will be able to play on the team when he is in high school. On the surface, it may seem the only skill I developed was the ability to play a new sport. But instead the experience has done much more. I now have a realistic idea of what it takes to make something happen in the real world, and I am now a stronger leader among my peers. I have had to acquire new responsibilities as a leader on our team, such as being able to recruit, instruct, and support my teammates in what they do. I view these as opportunities to guide others around me into becoming better at whatever they pursue. Whether they are struggling with their lacrosse skills, schoolwork, or anything else at all, I do anything in my power to assist them. This became a major part of my character that developed through this experience, which includes being able to work as a team. Looking forward to starting college, I know I will be able to use the skills I developed throughout this process to face hardships like schoolwork or interacting socially to make new
