When I first started getting involved in community service, it was simply to fulfill my obligations for NHS and the other service organizations I was involved with. I was ignorant of the fact that service activities are needed in the community. Not only that, they can be both fulfilling and helpful to the beneficiaries of the service. I can recall one event in particular. I was a team leader of a group going around the community raking leaves for those who may not be able to rake it themselves. My team was raking leaves for a man who was not home at the time we started. A retired veteran, the man came home from the burial of a fallen comrade. I was touched by the fact he was appreciative but cynical towards why we were raking his lawn for
him not expecting anything in return. If giving back to the community was a high priority on everyone’s list, instead of feeling incredulity, his response would have been more elated and grateful towards the community he lived in. In my experience with community service I have come to realize that sometimes the needs of others are more important than your own. I have adopted a selflessness that I will use for the benefit of others. Especially when I am given more resources at the college level, I will help create a sense of unity, reduce suffering, and promote goodwill to others in the community I live.
I have done a lot of community service at Moundville Nursing Home from 2007-2014. I answered the phone and I sat with the sick patients. I helped in the kitchen and I would bring their supper to their rooms. I helped fed some of the patients because they couldn’t feed themselves. My favorite was when I volunteered for their Halloween festival. I also helped the nursing home with their trunk-a-treat on Halloween. I would go downtown with them and I would pass out candy to the sweet little kids. The whole Moundville community would come and enjoy themselves. I helped the nursing home with their Christmas parade. I helped decorate and pass out the Christmas gift. I did a great amount of community service at Jefferson Chapel CME Church. I would
I find myself extremely passionate in Community Service, I have volunteered at Emmanuel Apostolic Church during Vacation Bible School for the past two summers, preparing food, coming up with creative ideas to keep children occupied, and making sure children are safe. During this time my leadership and conversational skills have strengthened. In addition to that, I have also volunteered there on numerous occasions to feed the homeless. In high school, I also volunteered at an Elderly home on bingo night to interact with the elderly, gave a listening ear, it was extremely rewarding to see them smile, laugh, and interact with me as if they had known me for a while; that showed me how much they appreciate having company. I take huge delight in
My first project which I worked for was serving lunch at the Salvation Army in our city. Before my first shift, I have heard from many people that the people whom I will serve are rough and disrespectful. But I signed up already, and there was no turning back. On the day of the shift, I arrived at City Hall Station at 8:30 in the morning waiting for the rest of my team. All of the team members arrived by 9 and our leader walked us over the building. As we walked into the building, a whoosh of warm air struck my face and I thanked the leader for holding the door. Some people were walking around greeting us with joy which created a warm and welcoming environment. We explored around the complex and gathered around in the kitchen. The staff kindly informed us of what to do and soon the shift
Volunteering does not only help the community it benefits the person that is volunteering as well. My community service work at County Hospital is to care for the rudimentary needs of each patient. My goals are to provide inspiration during the healing process, teach kindness and compassion, and discover my own abilities for empathy. "Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes it is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, "I'll try again to tomorrow (Mary Anne Radmacher)." My hope as a volunteer is to help each patient find that voice, find that courage to go forward.
Community Service is a great opportunity to make a difference in the area you live in. There are so many ways to volunteer. Some people are given chances to do community service when they need to pay off fines for tickets. Most people simply do because they love getting involved. It’s their way of making the community a cleaner, healthier place.
Service is pivotal to building a democratic community. In class, we have learned that democracy means rule by the people. How can the people rule their community if they aren't involved in their community? By participating in community service, you are directly giving back to your community. Participating in community service isn't only beneficial to the organization and people being served, but is also beneficial to the people serving. According to the ICCE’s
Community service is salient for an individual to engage in for a plethora of reasons. An individual begins to understand others and how these individuals live and cope with certain situations or circumstances. It is crucial for me to know and understand how to communicate with culturally different people due to the fact that I aspire to be a Sports Orthopaedic doctor in the future. Different reactions will emerge from patients and I will have to know how to properly respond to the patients without coming off as rude or unempathetic. For example, patients who come from low-income families may be hesitate to proceed with the necessary surgery. They may worry about how much their insurance will cover and if they will have enough money over time
In community service I some things I’ve done have been work in restoring Evergreen Cemetery and working in The Ronald McDonald House. In working in Evergreen we mostly work to clear the overgrown cemetery. There are many groups that participate in this, such as ASPiRE, Into The Streets, off campus groups and even military groups so you meet a lot of people doing this. It’s pretty straight forward work, clearing the vines and plants from the cemetery and gravesites. But sometimes we need help clearing some particularly tough or difficult piece of the vegetation and we had to work together and far as leadership, for the most part there
Volunteerism creates a stronger community in several ways. Generally, volunteering creates a better life in citizens and instills happiness. Specifically, in a survey of 101 randomly selected districts in the UK including districts such as; Bristol,
. During my clinical rotation at Clearbrook, I was able to follow morning and afternoon shifts nurses and assist them with passing medications to Clearbrook clients. In this facility, most of the clients are diagnosed with MR or mental retardation. The causes of mental retardation can be some infections, before or after the birth, or chromosomal abnormalities, for example a Down Syndrome. Patients with mental retardation need a lot of help and assistance with their daily leaving activities. They also might have some problems in communication, so it is very important to develop appropriate communication technics in order to be able to understand patients’ needs.
People might think that community service is only the act of helping people in your community without money in exchange, but community service doesn’t only mean like that. Doing community service also means improving
While volunteering at various events, I learned the strife involved with doing something over and over again, such as giving dogs treats and taking them on walks during an adoption event, and checking bags in and out for the participants of a 5k marathon. During my medical hours, I spent quality time at Wise Chiropractic, Inc., a small chiropractic office ran by Dr. Jon Wise as the chiropractor and his wife Cristen Wise as the office manager and front desk person. In my time there, I spent a lot of time observing many different things such as procedures, terminology, patient interaction, special cases, etc. Although the process of going was fairly repetitive, the environment was constantly changing as different patients entered and exited the

I volunteered at East Parkside Nursing Home through my church 's mentoring program. At first, I was somewhat uncomfortable volunteering at a nursing home because my great-grandfather, among many others, was mistreated in a nursing home. But, as the day went on and we engaged in activities with the residents, I eventually calmed down and got into the smooth of things. We had one-on-one contact with the seniors, and we learned about their lives and families. One of the seniors was a veteran who fought in the Vietnam War and he told all of the volunteers a few short war stories. For several residents, their families rarely visited them, so they genuinely appreciated the volunteers spending time with them. Later, we made holiday cards and sang Christmas carols for the senior citizens. They seemed so elated and pleased, which made me feel so fulfilled that I could make someone 's day by doing something so
