The NFL is looking into Advanced Technology to assist in creating a safer game. To encourage more development of new technology and products to address concerns with player safety the NFL has created a system that incentivizes developers. We have created a “Engineering Roadmap” by bringing together people from academia, industry, government, and the NFLPA to determine the most pressing needs of our players. Helmets, Artificial Turf and the Ahead 3000 are the top developments in progress.
Helmets are an area of concern. To aid in the development of new technology, the NFL has made technology available for people to test new helmet concepts virtually. This is available at almost no cost. Additionally, all players wear the same helmets currently,

The NFL has also allocated a large sum of money towards the medical research of making the game of football a safer sport. Due to the intense scrutiny of the way we as the NFL have handled players has lead us to launch a new set of concussion and health related initiative which included allocating $100 million dollars into researching the prevention, diagnostics, and treatments of concussions. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell released a statement saying “The NFL has been a leader on health and safety in many ways, and we’ve made some real strides in recent years, But when it comes to addressing head injuries in our game, I’m not satisfied, and neither are the owners of the NFL’s 32 clubs. We can and will do better.” Sixty percent of the $100 million has gone towards the funding of equipment research, mainly improving and providing safer helmets for the players. We plan to use experts and engineers to find a way to get the same technology used in automobiles and find way to implement them in the helmets of today. The remaining $40 million dollars have been allocated to funding over the next few years to neuroscience and examining the long term of concussions and treatment …show more content…
For Safe Football Advocacy Group Position
For Safer Football is an advocacy group which includes former players, the medical community, parents of youth players, etc. They have formed this group to specifically to address the safety of football at all levels. They are engaging the NFL leadership to discuss youth football and how the NFL can influence youth programs to be safer.
For Safer Football claims that the NFL has not done enough to make the NFL safer. They believe the NFL should do more to combat the decline in children signing up to play football in youth leagues and we should do more on the grassroots level. For Safer Football is also concerned that the NFL has lost too much money because of lawsuits, and bad publicity.
Solutions they have suggested are more research into medical marijuana to combat CTE symptoms, new helmet research, safer tackling techniques and no tackles during pre-season to limit
Football is one of the most popular sports in the United States, and it’s viewed as the most exciting and intriguing American sport. Many football players have highly affected the lives of their fans; they are looked upon as role models and they are admired and worshiped by many. Football’s biggest event, the Super Bowl, brings in many viewers each year. Football attracts many people of all age groups and its widely played in high schools, colleges, and professionally. It seems like any normal sport—but is it safe?
Playing football comes with great costs, including physical and mental health deterioration, plus the amount of time spent prepping before game day. Which can pose several questions, “Why suffer for a game, is it worth the money? Is it worth the fame? How great is the cost?” I believe that football, should have stricter regulations for the treatment of injuries, along with informing players of just how devastating a concussion can be, along with the other major injuries that commonly occur while playing football.
Throughout history in the NFL, head injuries and fixing those problems have always been hidden from the athletes because of the NFL striving to make a large profit instead of caring for the players. With this being an ongoing problem between NFL players and the NFL itself, many past and current players are digging deeper to find the truth and statistics continue to show how serious this problem actually is. When the lawsuits first began to come known to the public, the NFL agreed to pay over seven hundred million dollars to compensate former players suffering neurological injuries. Many believe the NFL offered this so quickly, hoping to avoid a potential public relations nightmare. The NFL, a ten billion dollar annual business, couldn’t take any type of guilt, or legal discovery, which some inside and out of the industry expected could have caused a fatal blow to the game’s future (Thiel). The settlement may have prevented the public from learning much about the past, but the issue of head injuries is a danger to football and won’t just go away because NFL wants it to (Waldron).
Playing football comes with several risks factors that players’ acknowledge prior to playing the game starting a young age. Regardless, these players still chose to play the game, which they end up loving and cherishing despite all the risks accompanied with it. Football is one of the toughest sports in the world; it takes a certain amount of strength, speed, and aggressiveness to play 48 minutes of hard-nosed football. However, the National Football League (NFL) is in the midst of a controversial issue. Is the NFL getting soft? This has been a debatable issue for several years. While some believe that implementing all these rules in the NFL is progressively turning the game soft, others say that the NFL is not getting soft; it is just trying to make the game safer for its players.
Are young children putting their health and even their lives at risk if they partake in the sport of football? Some claim that the American sport is far too dangerous and the risk of concussions and injuries far outway the pros of the physical sport, while others insist that technological improvements and new regulations have made the sport safer. Jonathan Zimmerman, a professor of history and education at New York University, argues in his paper, “We Must Stop Risking the Health of Young Football Players,” that football is a sport that is too dangerous for the youth. He states his belief that technological improvements in helmets and changes in the rules of the sport have had little effect on reducing injuries and that nothing has worked.
Football is one sport that has scientists working around the clock on finding the perfect solution to help decrease concussions. Scientist, Vincent Farrara, created the Xenith X1 Helmet in 2004. Ferrara used to be a quarterback for Harv...
Is there significant evidence to show that the NFL is successful in decreasing or increasing concussion rates? Are there other things that the NFL should be doing to help prevent concussions?
Concussions have become arguably the #1 most prevalent issue in football today. The number of concussions throughout football has been rising for the past 20-30 years and there seems no way of stopping them. However, the NFL and many private researchers are set on finding a way to conquer this issue. They want to stop these concussions from happening and prevent the diseases resulting from them that have ruined so many football families’ lives. In order to solve this problem, I think that these researchers need to combine all of their knowledge to solve an issue that so many want solved. As soon as we conquer this “illness” we can return to enjoying the game that we love.
Even though the devastation of concussions is just rising to the surface, they have always been around. In 1994, the NFL started a committee called the MTBI (Mild Traumatic Brain Injury). Dr. Elliot Pellman was appointed as chair, and he was quoted saying, “We think the issue of knees, of drugs and steroids and drinking is a far greater problem, according to the number of incidents” (Ezell). This quote shows how concussions did not hold much importance, even though it should have been the committee's main focus. This is ironic, because in today’s sport world concussions are a highly talked about topic. They hold such significance that some rules are even being changed to lower the risk for players.
II. Summary: Players’ safety should be focused on more by making rules stricter in the NFL, teaching younger players how to tackle, and increasing the rules because helmets do not always prevent concussions.
Present players in the National Football League disagree with all the protective rules now but when they are no longer playing football it’ll be a different story. Players also tend to forget that they won 't be playing football forever and that they will need to be healthy later on in life when they can no longer play football. It’s not okay for players to complain about the safety rules now, and then later claim the National Football
Every sport has its tricks and ways of doing things the right way. You can assure anyone that the sport their child is playing is safe, because there is always a stronger, bigger, faster player than them. Personally, I believe football is a demanding sport that requires a lot of strength, and stamina. If you read the article “Hard Knocks” by Alan Schwarz, it gives a brief story about a young football player. “The autopsy showed that his brain was in the early stage of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, more commonly known as C.T.E.” Many football players die from this condition.
More youth coaches are taking education courses to keep football safe, in order for them not to get hurt. Coaches also have been told to tell players to use their shoulders instead of their head. Coaches have been taught how long to bench their players to allow them to recover from game play. Thus decreasing concussion rates.
The NFL is currently doing enough to protect its players by implementing new headgear and padding, constructing a new and softer turf, and even making a concussion protocol.
That football is dangerous and can cause death, because they are trying to make it safer. A former football player says that football can be made safe but he’s not sure if it’ll ever be safe enough. First To teach football players how to block and tackle in the appropriate way in order to reduce injuries. I know this because the author clearly says “Additional instruction on appropriate tackling and blocking techniques as well as position-specific conditioning may help reduce the risk of injury during running plays. Second They want to start suspending players who violate against unnecessary or intentional hits and are also considering ways to change the frequency and structure of its practices to reduce head trauma.
