It’s unbelievable to think that one of the top sporting events in the world is in college athletics. You have other professional sports like basketball, baseball, hockey and NASCAR, but there championships still don’t compare to the NCAA championship. March madness is so popular that global firms Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc believe that companies are expected to lose about $1.2 billion because of every hour of work that employees are watching games instead of working (Koba, 2014). These employees will spend on average 90 minutes a day at work watching basketball instead of doing their job. With over 50 million Americans competing in some type of March madness pool, this doesn’t seem out of the question. This just shows how popular of an event this tournament is. Some people even believe that this tournament costs business so much money that it’s actually toxic for the US economy.
There are 12240 students at Duke University, and every year 12 out of those 12240 are put on a mission. The expectations are far above the ground, these 12 men and their coaching staff are called the Duke University Blue Devils basketball team. Year after year their mission is to bring home an NCAA basketball national championship trophy. Three of 84 teams at Duke University have reached their goal by winning a national championship.

There has been a lot of athletic scandals in colleges in most parts of the world. These scandals have been as a result of the coaches and the directors of athletics in the colleges failing to take the full force of the law and giving their players freedom to do everything even if it is against the law. One of this fatal scandals is the Baylor university basketball scandal that occurred in the year 2003. This scandal involved the players and the coaches of the team. The scandal left one player dead and the other imprisoned for thirty five years. The team was subjected to a lot of punishment by the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The NCAA is a non-profit organization comprised of 1281 institutions, organizations, individuals and conferences and that organizes the athletic programs of most of the colleges and universities in the United States and Canada (The New York Times, 2003).

There are two types of players in the game. There are the kids who play basketball because they are athletic, and all they are seeking to gain is the recognition and awards. They want to be known. Those players are self-centered, they do not play for the team, and generally don’t play because they love the game. These are the types of players who don’t usually go on to play at the next level. On the other hand, there are the players that absolutely dedicate their life to the game of basketball just because they love the game. That is what coaches are looking for in a player, and that is the kind of player I am striving to be.
There is a growing debate as to whether or not student-athletes should be paid. NCAA was much simpler back when President Theodore Roosevelt helped to create it in 1906. Then, it was an institute for regulating certain rules and supporting the sports that everyone loved. Yet now in the 21st century, the NCAA is a billion dollar company that keeps growing. The increasing possibility of the unionization has brought more and more attention to whether student-athletes should be paid. The opinion varies across the board – with some saying that the possibility of a student-athlete seems unfair to those who see the athletes as receiving special treatment with full rides to colleges and universities. “The hope is a union for university athletes concentrates on the competitive environment, not on payments” (Bondy, Web). Many questions are connected to how it would be implemented when college sports create little revenue. There is only profit seen from football and basketball, which would discriminate against the rest of the athletes from other sports. The topic requires an explanation as to where the funds to pay students would come from. Will this be written in a contract or a regular per-hour job? And, if the school were to make little profit while the expenses continued to grow, would the NCAA pay the student-athletes instead of the schools?
