History of the NBA
Basketball once started with nine players on a team with whites only, and it developed into the national basketball association (NBA) by adding rules, to becoming an international sensation affecting people around the world to fall in love with the sport.
The NBA is major influence in today’s society, although it was a minor sport when it was created in Springfield, Massachusetts by Dr James Naismith, who worked as a YMCA trainer (“Basketball Origins, Growth…”). He was given only certain amount of time to create a game for a winter sport because it was too cold outside, so he grabbed a soccer ball and a peach basket to use for the ball and net. Earl Lloyd was the first black player to play in the NBA back in October 31st 1950 in Rochester, New York(Spears). Since Mr Lloyd was the first NBA player, he wasn’t treated as equal as the other players, his team traveled and Lloyd wasn’t allowed in some hotels they check in at. During 1952-53 , he wasn’t allowed to play at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Even till this day Lloyd doesn't like that his own team he was player for didn't even stand up for him, even how much work he put in on the team(Spears). Since basketball wasn't such a big deal for black players to play on a team, only because 3 years earlier Jackie Robinson already dealt with all kinds of black comments on the major baseball league team(Spears). Lloyd isn't bothered that hardly any of the black players know him now all he wants is a better future for the new black players(Spears). Over the years Mr Lloyd became the NBA'S first black assistant coach with detroit, also later became the 2nd head basketball coach, after Bill Russell. With all his knowledge he became noticed and was put into the basketball hall of fame in 2003(Spears). The thing about Lloyd, he might have played basketball for The NBA first, but he was the first one to get drafted. The first player to get drafted and known was Chuck Cooper, a star at Duquesne.
