Space, a glorious sight that numerous astronauts have been able to see firsthand. Now, as NASA continues to cut programs vital to further exploration in space, the numerous are turning into only a glorious few. With more program cuts being made, hope in the American dream of space travel is cut as well and NASA begins to fade away. With NASA slowly beginning to lose its significance in society, private companies are taking hold and having more of an impact on the space race. When NASA first started, the primary goal was to send Americans to the moon before the Soviets did. After accomplishing that goal, there was confusion as to what the next step would be. However, this future reality is turning into only a silly dream as the future of space travel is fizzling out. As government budget cuts keep happening left and right, predictions of future public space travel are hard to come by (Sparrow 308). As the government is cutting NASA’s budget, NASA is cutting programs vital to its original purpose of manned and unmanned space exploration. The Apollo program, which helped put the first men on the moon, was eventually scrubbed due to government budget cuts. The space shuttle program that helped build the International Space Station and shuttle astronauts to and from there was also scrubbed due to budget cuts. Even a program that was barely started was scrubbed due to budget cuts in the government. Now, as the future plans of NASA are in discussion, problems from the government are rising. Government officials are arguing if NASA should be banned from the participating in the International Space Station program in order to focus on other, more difficult, tasks, such as deep-space exploration and missions to Mars.
