Greek mythology has affected numerous parts of today’s world. Some successful companies use names from Greek myths, such as Nike, Ajax, and Dionysus. Phrases people say today, like “Achilles’ heel”, which means a weakness someone has, which came from Achilles being killed by an arrow in the heel. One of the Greek myths included three characters: Pegasus, Bellerophon, and the Chimaera. The first character in one of the Greek myths is Pegasus. According to “Pegasus,” by New World Encyclopedia, “Pegasus, in Greek mythology, winged horse, son of Poseidon, god of the sea, and the Gorgon Medusa” (New World Encyclopedia). According to “Greek Mythology”, by Michael Karas and Charilaos Megas, “The Chimaera was a hybrid monster in Greek mythology, child of Typhoeus and Echidna and sibling of Cerberus and the Lernaean Hydra” (Karas & Megas). This is important because it states the parents and sibling of the Chimaera. According to “Greek Mythology” “It had the head and body of a lion, as well as the head of a goat that was attached to its back, and a tail that ended on a head of a snake” (Karas & Megas). This evidence is important because it states what the Chimaera consisted of. According to “Greek Mythology” “It resided in Lycia, a place in Asia Minor, where it ravaged the lands with its fire breath” (Karas & Megas). This is important because it states where the Chimaera lived. According to “Greek Mythology” “It was killed by Bellerophon, assisted by Pegasus, when the former was asked by King Iobates of Lycia. Bellerophon rode on Pegasus’ back, who could fly, and shot arrows at the Chimera from above” (Karas & Megas). This evidence is important, because it states how the Chimaera was slain. In general, the Chimaera was a hybrid monster with the head and body of a lion, another head of a goat that was attached to the beast’s back, and a tail with the end being the head of a
Greek Mythology played a monumental role in the structural development of ancient Greece, not only as a society, but as individuals. Surprisingly, their religion was not exactly one of originality. In fact, their religion was loosely based on earlier cultures’ religions. It bears many strikingly similar resemblances to some of the oldest recorded religions in history. Ancient Greek religion is a type of polytheism called “Monarchial Polytheism.” That is, they believe in several different gods and deities but there is a supreme ruler above all of them. In order to fully understand how similar the mythological systems of religions have been throughout the years, you must look back towards the earliest of recorded civilizations. Polytheism dates back to the Mesopotamian and Ancient Egyptian religions, around the 4th millennium BC and possibly before that.
The Greeks believed that the earth was formed before any of the gods appeared. The gods, as the Greeks knew them, all originated with Father Heaven, and Mother Earth. Father Heaven was known as Uranus, and Mother Earth, as Gaea. Uranus and Gaea raised many children. Amoung them were the Cyclopes, the Titans, and the Hecatoncheires, or the
How is the word myth used popularly? In today’s society, myths are more commonly referred to as a story that is known amongst a group that may or may not have any truth or validity to it. These type of stories have been told from one generation to another generation with a common theme every time it is said or repeated. I remember growing up my older sister would scare us younger kids with the urban myth of Candyman. This was during a time before I even knew about the movie, and for her, it was a way to scare us kids out of our wits. She would tell us about this story of a slave who returns from the dead as a ghost who was in search of revenge and could only be summoned by saying his name five times while facing a mirror.
Every hero in Greek mythology produces some type of lesson for all of us to take heed to. Each hero fell in and out of favor with the gods and was forced to do unthinkable tasks. But, without these heroes, Greek mythology would not be what it is today. The heroes of their time are what made the history of the Greeks come together. As shown by Hercules, Perseus, and Theseus, a great deal of courage was required of them along with sacrifices.
They had similar beliefs, but also immeasurable differences. It was composed of many meaningful gods and goddesses that all played a part in the everyday life of the average Roman and Greek person of that time.
Greek Mythology originated around 775 B.C.E. It all started with Homer’s Iliad and continued on with Hesiod’s Theogany. These were the first two myths to be recorded in Greek mythology.
We may have seen this particular Greek mythology creature in plenty of cartoons, in toy stores, as a pair of Nike shoes, in movie company logos and he is even an airline. Pegasus is one of Greek mythologies most popular and recognized creatures, He was recognized by his association with Perseus and Bellerophon, for his flight to Mt. Olympus and finding his place next to Zeus. According to Greek mythology, he is a big beautiful immortal white horse with wings like an angel. The name Pegasus derived from the Greek word Pegai, which means "spring", I find it ironic since Pegasus is also known for creating the spring Hippocrene. According to astrologers, the famous Pegasus' constellation is one of the largest and easiest set of stars to spot due to their really bright contrast. Pegasus is known to be in museums and
...oldness of both father and son, Agamemnon and Orestes to complete their difficult task, the utter strength and courage of Hercules to complete his twelve near-impossible feats, and the single-handed determination that only courage gave to the wise Odysseus, we can see that it was courage and mainly courage that helped all these well-known men to complete the tasks that asserted and showed their dominance in Greek Mythology. Therefore, with these being said, and putting it all into perspective, we see how it was courage that helped not only these same men, but other men as well, such as the brave Achilles, Theseus, Perseus, Ajax, Jason, Diomedes, Bellerophon, Hector, and so on, throughout much of Greek Mythology. This being said, it is then no wonder that “The Greek word for courage or bravery is andreia, a noun formed from the word for a (male) man.” (Raphael 32).
Greek mythology is a bloody and interesting subject. One such part of Greek mythology is Bellerophon the son of Poseidon. These two are supposedly father and son. Poseidon is also considered the father of Pegasus. The Pegasus was the steed of Bellerophon in his adventures and through out his reign as a King. Pegasus has his own myth entirely and so does his mother the Gorgon Medusa. Medusa was a beautiful turned ugly person. Greek mythology is interesting and many people enjoy reading it.

The Classical mythology contains tales and epics of the ancient Greek and roman literatures and myths. On the other hand, Homer’s two epic poems, the Iliad relates to the events of the Trojan War while the Odyssey details Odysseus expedition after the war. Homer’s epic poems, the Odyssey and the Iliad present a major part of ancient history as modern fictional heroic stories. In ancient Greek, heroes were humans who were depicted to possess superhuman abilities. A key example in the classical mythology is Akhilles who is later known in Homer’s Iliad as Achilles. Achilles is he greatest hero of the Iliad whereas Odysseus is the greatest hero of the Odyssey. The greatest heroes from classic mythology and the modern fictional hero’s stories are mortal, and subject to death. The Odyssey and the Iliad marks the beginning of modern fictional literature.

Pegasus is the “Famous Winged Horse” in Greek Mythology. He was the trusted steed of hero, Bellerophon and many other Gods, all from Mount Olympus. Like most mythological beings, their back stories are often confusing and messy and Pegasus is no exception to that.
