In ‘‘A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings”, indicated by the presence of priest, bishop and pope, it is known to the readers that Christianity is the established religion as well as a mythology for the villagers. However, they are not devout believers. As an illustration, Father Gonzaga suspects the old man’s identity just because he doesn't speak Latin, which is said to be the language of God. Also, in order to prove his sanctity, people are told to find out whether he has a navel. This kind of ignorant view and shallow understanding reveals their innocence and misinterpretation of the mythology. In addition, Pelayo and Elisenda think that instead of an angel, the old man is no more than an poor yet ordinary castaway born with wings, showing their comic limitations of imagination of religion. It is nothing less than an offensive action harming the angel’s dignity. Despite his patience, the crowds continue their irritative and torturous behaviour. What's worse is that they even burn him with a branding iron as if they are declaring ownership of him. Their ignorance is therefore reflected by those insulting acts done to the angel for their own entertainment.

He does not understand why Ultima, a close elderly friend and a healer, can save his dying uncle from the curses of evil while the priest from El Puerto with his holy water and the power of God can not lift the curse from him. He wonders whether God really exists or if the “Cico's” story of the golden carp is true. Bless Me, Ultima, is a compelling story that deals with Antonio's family, beliefs, and dreams.
By analyzing the moments, past and present, in which the Christo Aparecido shows itself to be animate it can be said, “that the people of Totolapan understand themselves as both syncretic and traditional in their beliefs and practices (P. 179). It is this combination of syncretism and traditionalism that solidifies,“The Christo's status as a Santo, a manifestation of the divine for the people of Totolapan and as the central symbol of local religious and cultural identity” (P. 173). Thus, we can account for the continuity of the Christo Aparecido by the fact it has survived relegation to idolatry because the people are confident of its animus held within to be present. As long as this remains true the Christo, in the words of his devotees', will be continue understood as “tiempo inmemorial”.
Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s story “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” exposes the greed and selfishness of humans. Marquez expresses Elisenda and Pelayo’s hatred for people on their land who want to catch a glimpse of the angel when he says “Her spine twisted from sweeping up so much market trash, then got the idea of fencing in the yard and charging five cents admission to see the angel.” The inconveniences that the angel has caused drove them to use him and make money off of him by turning him into a giant spectacle. Despite the fact that the angel is not unusual the townspeople treat him as if he was a zoo animal as they “Burned his side with a hot iron.” This sends a message that people often ignore the fact that their actions have the power to create miserable situations for others.

When the angel comes, the very wise old woman tells them that he must be here to take their child, but they don’t listen to her intelligent advice. “Against the judgment of the wise neighbor woman, for whom angels in those times were the fugitive survivors of spiritual conspiracy, they did not have the heart to club him to death. Pelayo watched over him all afternoon from the kitchen, armed with his bailiff’s club, and before going to bed he dragged him out of the mud and locked him up with the hens in the “wire chicken coop”. Pelayo defies nature by not letting the Angel go, and hence the Angel is locked up “as if he weren’t a supernatural creature but a circus animal”. At the end of the story, the wife watches the angel fly away and realizes that now he is no longer an annoyance in her life.

Religion has had a profound effect on human culture; unfortunately, the trouble with it is faith, which creates skepticism in many individuals. In order to accommodate the issue of faith, religions have regulations, values, and ceremonies, making religion a belief system, hence creating clarity to support faith. Catholicism has become a belief system that feeds its follower with answers; however, these answers are only assumptions. There are no factual answers, and as a result, religious leaders have created an expectation in which religion is supposed to fit; nonetheless, its accuracy is unknown. In Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s short story “A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings,” the values of religion are the center of criticism. A man with enormous wings, the protagonist of the story, is never strictly classified as man or angel. He is a rejected by society because he goes against the society’s expectation of what a true angel should be, an expectation taught to them by religion. The ambiguity of the old man with enormous wings tests the true faith of the followers of Catholicism, symbolizing an archetypical Christ figure. Both the priest and society’s foul response to him demonstrates the society’s understanding of religion to be superficial. As a result, the story argues, followers of religion must not rely on the assumptions their religion has created but believe instead, with faith.

When they first find the old man, the villagers claim that “he’s an angel” (Marquez 1). There is no denying the man’s divinity but he seems to represents much more than your average angel. In fact, the old man doesn’t resemble the typical image of an angel at all. Rather than being a young and pure angel, he is “much too human” with his “unbearable smell”. The story is about a Colombian family visited by an aged winged man who has fallen to earth. Though the story revolves mostly around this character, the story's true focus is not on the angel, but on the actions of the curious people that involve themselves with this man. The author illustrates in the story how humans can be abusive, ignorant and cruel to individuals who are different than others. The story describes how the mysterious Old Man is judged, sold, and mistreated until he is finally strong enough to fly away.
In “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings,” the angel appears seemingly out of nowhere and changes Pelayo and Elisenda’s life for the better. Despite being treated as no more than a pet, he provides them with enough money to build a luxurious house, Each member hides behind a different excuse to avoid doing any work. However, once Gregor was taken away from them, they were given the push they needed to stop making excuses and provide for themselves. Mr. Samsa went from a man who “could not be expected to do much” to a bank messenger, Mrs. Samsa changed from a woman who had no expectations in her life because of her asthma to a successful seamstress, and Grete’s life transformed from days spent “dressing herself nicely, sleeping long, helping in the housekeeping, going out to a few entertainments and above all playing the violin” to devoting herself to be a salesgirl, even spending her evenings practicing her shorthand and French to improve (482). These jobs were not just a way for them to make ends meet, but were “admirable and likely to lead to better things later on” (499-500).

On the other hand, Homer’s two epic poems, the Iliad relates to the events of the Trojan War while the Odyssey details Odysseus expedition after the war. Homer’s epic poems, the Odyssey and the Iliad present a major part of ancient history as modern fictional heroic stories. In ancient Greek, heroes were humans who were depicted to possess superhuman abilities. A key example in the classical mythology is Akhilles who is later known in Homer’s Iliad as Achilles. Achilles is he greatest hero of the Iliad whereas Odysseus is the greatest hero of the Odyssey. The greatest heroes from classic mythology and the modern fictional hero’s stories are mortal, and subject to death. The Odyssey and the Iliad marks the beginning of modern fictional literature.
