The Mythbusters are a television show that tests myths to see if they are true or false, in order to accomplish their results, they need to use the same method a scientist would use for his or her experiment. This method is called the “scientific method” and gives us a guideline of steps that need to be taken when we are testing something. The first step of this scientific method is to ask yourself the question of what it is you want to know. This would be, “What is the fastest way to cool a 6 packs of beer?” The second step of scientific method is background research. Adam tells us that he found this myth on the discovery channel, where it stated that in Vietnam people would bury a 6 pack in sand, pour gasoline on top, and set fire to it,
it would be colder after pulling it out. The hypothesis would be that the 6 pack would be colder because when water evaporates, it sucks heat. Therefore the burning gas should suck heat out of the beer. The Mythbusters then initiate the next scientific method which is experimenting. They measure the temperature of the beer before they bury it, and measure the temperature after they pull it out. They analyzed the data and found out that the experiment did not produce a significant change in the temperature of the beer. They communicate the results with each other, and to us (the viewers). The same question is still asked with this experiment which is the fastest way to cool a 6 pack of beer. The background research is basically common knowledge, because many people put beverages in coolers of ice, or ice water, to cool drinks. They Mythbusters are testing which combination works the best. The hypothesis would be that the ice, water, and salt will produce the coldest beer because salt decreases the freezing point of the water, speeding up to cooling process. The experiment begins, and Adam and Jamie set up 3 coolers. One with ice, one with ice, and water, and another one with ice, water, and salt. They put the beers in for 5 minutes, then test it. While they are waiting, they use a carbon dioxide fire extinguisher to cool down the beer. After 3 minutes, the temperature is approximately 37 degrees which is an ideal temperature. When they analyze the data from the coolers, they found out that the water, ice, and salt produced the coldest beer with the water and ice producing the 2nd coldest beer.

The scientific method is how psychologists gain knowledge about the mind and behavior. It is used by all scientists. The experimental method is the one way to engage the scientific method, and the only way to find a cause and effect in relationships. It is summarized in five steps, observing some phenomenon in the world, forming a hypothesis which is an educated prediction about relationships between two or more variables, examining the gathered information by using empirical research, determining what the results are and drawing them, and evaluating the results whether it will support the hypothesis or not. Researchers, at the end, submit their work for publication for all to see and read (King, 2016). There are three types of psychological research in the scientific method, descriptive research, correlation, and experimental research (King, 2016). The article Best Idea: Eyes Wide Open by Richard Powers discusses different aspects of the scientific method. It begins by talking about a man named Abu Ali al-Hasan Ibn al-Haytham who made discoveries regarding vision. He did this by simply performing observations and having people stare directly at the sun. Ibn al-Haytham changed the way science was viewed by telling people to simply look in order to gain information. Later, William of Ockham came up with the idea that “when you have multiple ways to explain something, go with the one that has the least amount of assumptions” (Powers, 1999, p. 4). My interpretation of this is that you shouldn’t make something harder than it needs to be. Do not assume, but rather work with the observations and experiments that you have performed. This idea eventually became known as Ockham’s Razor. Rene Descartes went in a different direction and believed that all science can be demonstrated by a series of deductions and self-evident facts, instead of something that is run through observation and experimentation.
Often, therapies that are pseudoscience will appear to be scientifically based when in fact they are not. In their article, “Science and Pseudoscience in Communication Disorder: Criteria and Applications,” Fin, Bothe and Bramlett (2005) assert there are 10 criteria that can assist in determining if a therapy is scientifically based or if it is pseudoscience (p. 172).

The first step is to state the problem in a question, like “what happens to a person’s heart rate when they watch a movie?” The next step is to research things that would be helpful in resources like the internet, magazines, interviews, and books. A scientific method example would be when an investigator arrives to a crime scene, they would first search the area for clues and see if something doesn’t seem right.
