Personality is as unique to each individual as their fingerprint or DNA. A basic definition of personality is a pattern of traits combined with characteristics, however how it is seen in an individual is complex. The Myers-Briggs Personality Indicator test is based off Jung's theory of psychological types. The personality indicator test was developed in the late 1900’s. According to the Myers-Briggs Foundation, the purpose of the test is, “personality inventory is to make the theory of psychological types described by C. G. Jung understandable and useful in people's lives”(). There are four main sections evaluated by the inventory, which are as follows; favorite world, information, decision, and structure. The completed inventory generates an individual’s personality type utilizing the four sections.” There are sixteen personality types according to this test. It gives a complete illustration of an individual. This test calculated my personality as INFJ which means Introverted iNtuitive Feeling Judging. Apparently this is a rare personality type. Furthermore, the break down was explained as, “You have slight preference of Introversion over extraversion (16%), you have slight preference of intuition over sensing (6%), you have moderate preference of feeling over thinking (28%), and you have moderate preference of judging over perceiving (41%)” (). I was astonished at how much data this system generated related to my personality type such as career choices, learning styles, and communication style. Additionally, it was intriguing to consider famous individuals who had this personality type. I believe that these test if taken truthfully can identify deficiencies that individuals can work on to benefit not only themselves but others in the organizations that they work in. Some models state that it is in human nature and chemicals that decided how a person acts but I believe it is based on life experiences and a personality can change as long as a person knows the deficiencies and works to change them.
In terms of my personality result, INFJ, I agree with many of the traits that are unique to this personality type. Comments such as being an introverted extrovert made me realize how dead on my Myers-Briggs personality result was. I have always been an introvert my entire life and have cared for the feelings of others. Seeing how certain traits seemed to shine through in my Myers-Briggs personality description added a great deal of credibility to the test. I have always been called a perfectionist and overachiever, but never knew how those traits correlated to me being exhausted in certain situations.
