The first essay I ever wrote was hard for me to write. I didn’t know the first step of how to put a paper together. I would start writing and get frustrated that my ideas are not coming together.I knew what I wanted to say but my thoughts weren’t translating into the paper. Looking back on this class, I have realized just how much my writing has improved since the beginning of the quarter I chose narrative analysis and arguments to show how much I improved this year and know my strength and weakness I had in this school year. The first narrative I reviewed was “a twisted fairytale” this was a short story we wrote at the start of the year. We were supposed to write about Goldilocks and the Three Bears but with twist. I did a good job on showing the main idea of the story and what I am trying to convey, unfortunately the story was not catchy enough, it did not flow very well and it was somehow boring to me. I didn't use the right punctuation, so the reader could not know where the sentence bigins and ends, it was awful. I think I could have gotten a full score if I took my time to write it and not slack off. …show more content…
The next piece of writing you will see in my portfolio is an essay about Analyzing Author's Style called “ the story the absolutely true diary of a part- time Indian” This was a piece I wrote in the beginning of 8th grade based on a short excerpt from the story by Sherman Alexie.
We were supposed to show the style the author used while writing the story. I used clear and meaning full thesis about the way the author uses stylistic devices to achieve an effect, and I Integrate relevant details to provide support. but I also had a lot of errors. My paragraph breaks, and because it had a lot of lack of topics it was hard to tell where one thought ends and one thought begins. One of the main issues I noticed was i switched from "her" to "him" when talking about the author. And That needed to stay consistent because the author was
male. My last example of writing is an argument called “no background checks” the argument was if there should be background checks on guns. I think I did pretty well on this one than any other essay I have ever wrote. I gave some good details about why there should be no background checks on guns. My English was very good, but I had some minor errors. My essay gains power and focus as it goes on. The beginning was a bit disorganized, And it had some grammar errors. This class has impacted my writing skills in a positive way. This class has helped me to acquire the skills needed to become a better writer in middle and for my future. I learned how to use the writing process effectively by brainstorming ideas for my topic, making drafts, getting in groups for peer edits, and revising my writing into a final draft. We had some group work in the class, and that was beneficial to my learning.
In the beginning of the year I was not a strong writer; the first three essays we wrote I consecutively received a 4,5--, and 3 on the AP scale. The main reason why I scored low on all of these essays is mainly due to the fact that I needed to use a deeper thought process as well as eliminate the use of any absolutes I was using. The journey through language and literature has always been an intriguing one for me. It is for this reason that I chose English as my major. It seems that every teacher or professor that I have had, has always been able to pinpoint one specific element in my writing that I need to work on. This has not been a negative thing by any stretch, because with each passing semester there is an element of my literature that will be perfected for the next. This is the wonder that is English, and the reason for my passion in this subject area.
Unit 1 taught me to focus on each step in the writing process. Approaching the task
Anyone who is doing any type of writing piece has a process. They may not know it but it is there and it exists. It is one’s approach to their piece and how they go about accomplishing it. It has to do with how you write it, how many drafts you do, as well as your revision process if you even have one. My writing process however has room for improvement. A summation of my writing process consist of heavy planning, one draft, and little revisions. Anne Lamott, Shirley Rose, and Kathleen Yancey all drew attention to major points through their writing pieces that support and dispute my writing process. Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.

‘I am going to fail’ was the very first thought that crept into my mind on that very first day of class. Before I stepped into the classroom on the first day, I felt pretty good about my writing. I had done previously well in English, and didn’t think this class would be much of a challenge. This all changed on the first day of school, when my professor talked about the level of reading and writing expected for this class. Writing is something I always struggled with throughout my academic career. Many years ago, I began school as many other children do. You begin with going to kindergarten and as you progress you begin to learn the English language by first learning the alphabet and by then learning to write. For a large part of my high school years, my writing improvement seemed to fall to the wayside. When I began this course, I realized there is more to writing than meets the eye.
This semester has taught me a great deal about how to develop my rhetorical, persuasive, and reflective writing skills. In the rhetorical essay, I believe my skills revolving around analyzing evidence to support my claims were improved drastically. My rhetorical analysis introduced me to that a direct correlation between tone and what a writer is trying to prove must be present if an argument is going to be strong and effective. My persuasive essay forced me to focus on my tone and diction, as I chose to discuss a very controversial topic that is currently a major social issue within the United States as of today. Prior to writing this essay, I have never thoroughly considered how my audience might respond to my opinions and the evidence used
My purpose as a writer is to make myself even more improved in my writing skills. I want to extend my vocabulary and learn how to make enhanced writing. I hope to accomplish making writing easier for me as a student. I want to learn what new things I'm capable of doing with writing short stories and essays. I'm trying to improve my writing so I can become college and workforce ready. My audience is my teacher. I know that my audience will guide me in the right direction in order to make my writing worth reading. My teacher will help my writing skills improve by telling me what I need to fix and what I need to improve. This will inform the choices I make by trying different things to make myself better. Listening to others advice about how to become better at writing will also inform the choices I make.
Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class, I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work to see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded.
The act of writing an essay has always been something of a love/hate relationship for me. Like many students, I find the process to be either pure enjoyment or incredibly painful depending on my view of the topic. It’s something that I think all of us come to terms with at some point. Throughout this course I have come to realize that a lot of the pain associated with writing can be relieved through an understanding of the skills and methods needed. The process of my growth in this class can be seen throughout my essays. It’s almost hard to believe the journey I’ve been on from my first essay in this class to my last. The feeling I get when I look over my writing assignments is the same as I would get if I were looking at pictures of myself developing as a child. It’s a feeling of distance. Like the entire process took place a long time ago. Despite the fact they were only done months ago; the changes that I have undergone in writing feel immense. Each essay from the first one to the last reflects the challenges and lessons that have contributed to my growth as a student.
Over the past semester, I have found the most challenging part of this course to simply be the transition from high school composition classes to college. Because writing expectations are so different in college than in high school, even with AP and Dual Enrollment “college level” classes, I first found myself being overwhelmed with the pressure to write the perfect first draft. The pressure came from knowing how much a final draft of a paper contributed to my grade. This left me sitting in front of my computer for hours at a time with thoughts of what I wanted to say racing through my head, but unable to deliver these thoughts into organized, structured sentences. I learned, through writing my persuasive essay, that instead of trying to write the paper start to finish and already in its perfect form, it is easier for me to look at the paper through its different components and focus on them individually, then work to best organize my ideas fluently.
After completion of my first paper, “Summary” I have discovered that my weaknesses out way my strengths in writing. I will be working diligently to improve several aspects of my composition. With hard work and a lot of practice I hope to overcome at least some off my short-falls in writing.
