My writing process and how I start off prepping for essays that always need to improve. First I will discuss my planning process and how much I do and how much I want to do. I’m always telling myself to read the topic, study it, practice it, get comfortable and try to stay focused. In reality I will glance the topic, take quick notes of the major parts for the subject, and after ten minutes get distracted and end up being feeling completely unnatural when writing, reading or typing. Never the less I plan a few times for one task until I can achieve something worth writing about in a way I can understand but very few can. My translation process is something I implement while I review over and over until I feel like my task is complete. I will discuss this in the short story …show more content…
Junior year in high school my English teacher gave the class a midterm assignment on the novel Beowulf. Write an essay on who he was and how is actions affected those around him. I began this with a simple plan, read the book write notes to build a character chart of his actions and how it affected other characters. So as I said earlier I get distracted and take little notes that are sporadic and confusing. I repeat this until some sense comes to light and I can write an incredible essay. As I write I take breaks to keep my mind focused on the task at hand. Then comes my review process a long process of checking, double checking, editing, erasing, rewriting, then peer reviewing before I submit it. My peers tend to be my siblings or friends whoever is available at the time. After all my notes and charts are shown to my reviewer I ask for an opinion on how I can improve. Using the knowledge, I am given I
In the length of the poem, Beowulf goes from abandoned child to gallant warrior to King. This transformation, expressed in the tone and content of the poem, shows the importance of the relationship between lord and thane and expresses the ultimate value of that connection. From the difference in battle scenes to Beowulf’s speeches, it is clear that he has gone from a somewhat self-loving hero to a selfless king. Within this change he also goes from serving a lord to becoming a lord, and in that way the poem shows us the importance of both sides of the relationship.
Do people ever talk about superheroes, and monsters? Especially people into comic books and children. Every child, even adults, have a superhero they look up to, or a role model they want to grow up to be like. Superheroes are everywhere from movies to books. Children even sit in their room playing with toy superheroes, hoping one day they can be just like them. Even hundreds of thousands of years ago there were superheroes! A long time ago in the Anglo-Saxon Period there was a brave and loyal hero! His name was Beowulf, and everyone looked up to him. This hero definitely brought peace to many people, and if it wasn’t for the mighty hero Beowulf, the Anglo-Saxons would have been terrorized forever. Therefore, the times were hard before Beowulf, the Anglo-Saxon warriors always stood for three values, and the time was changed without monsters.
The loud thunder clashes causing the bottles of wine on the shelf to shake drastically clattering them against one another. The bartender wipes the counter smiling and makes a comment about the weather to three strangers as they sit attentively at the bar. “Do you all need another drink?” asked the bartender.
Waking up under my families lean-to next to my sister, Wihakayda just like every morning. The early rising sun illuminated the crystal clear gulf a few miles away from our hut. My parents had gotten up before me like usual. Dowanhowee, my mother was washing blackberries off and cooking a pitiful amount of fish over a ginormous roaring fire. The brave and noble warrior Akecheta was my father and he had caught them last night when he was out arrow fishing. This was all we had to eat for breakfast today. My dad was one of the best wrestlers in our village. He had earned a spot on the council and was currently there in a conference trying to figure out with the other leaders how we are going to make our food last. I had a few ideas on how to
Beowulf begins with a history of the Danish kings. Hrothgar is the present king of the Danes. He builds a hall, called Heorot, to house his army. The Danish soldiers gather under its roof to celebrate and have fellowship with each other. Grendel, who lives at the bottom of a nearby swamp, is awakened and disgusted by the singing of Hrothgar's men. He comes to the hall late one night and kills thirty of the warriors in their sleep. For the next twelve years Grendel stalks the mead hall known as Heorot.
“It doesn’t take a hero to order men into battle. It takes a hero to be one of those men who goes into battle,” Norman Schwarzkopf. In the epic poem, Beowulf, an epic hero from Geats travels far out of his way to help the Danes with their fight against the nasty Grendel. However, in the story Beowulf encounters three monsters that he takes into his own hands and defeats them all. In doing so, Beowulf is rewarded greatly and becomes king and is looked up to by all. In his last battle, Beowulf defeats the dragon but dies soon afterwards, he is given an honorable burial. This poem was told throughout the era of the Vikings and was later written down as the first actually hard copy of the story. It was Burton
A hero is someone who is admired for their courage and bravery, as well as their noble accomplishments. They are respected by almost everyone, due to their kindness and charitable mindset, that drives them to fight for the good of others. Beowulf is the perfect representation of a hero, based on multiple characteristics that he displays throughout the novel. Along with his characteristics, Beowulf also takes on many “hero like” challenges and tasks. In the novel, Beowulf is praised and admired throughout the kingdom for his bravery, humility, and selflessness.
The story of the epic hero, Beowulf, has been translated by many authors throughout the years. Among the many authors is Burton Raffel. Burton Raffel tried to instill or incorporate and project an emphasis on the importance of the qualities that a hero should posses. Burton Raffel translated Beowulf in 1963 after 44 other translations of Beowulf. As a translator, Burton Raffel faced what many other translators had to capture – the ideas of the author.
In the beginning of English 101 I was what you call a novice writer a person who only wrote what they felt was required. However, certain techniques that I learned in English 101 made me realize that writing was not about filling requirements; it’s about speaking out, exploring and proving a point. “Writing is an exploration. You start from nothing and learn as you go.” (Trimble, 17) In John Trimble’s quote he tries to point out that writing is something that you grow with and learn as you go along. I believe this growth was achieved with a technique that was introduced to me by my professor called repetitive revision. What I found out was that revision of your essays helps in recognizing your mistakes and enhances the flow of your essays. By providing me...

Beowulf is a very brave hero, he has fought and killed many creatures before, but this battle was different. He knew this battle was of great importance to everyone, and that made him that much more nervous. This creature was fierce and had been tormenting their village for as long as they could remember, so her death would be a huge victory for Beowulf and it would be an even bigger relief for the villagers. All of the people in the village were cheering for Beowulf as he walked away headed off to the greatest battle of his life.
The legend of Beowulf is one that has been told for centuries. Among the traits that make this story stand apart from others that have been passed down in a similar style through generations is the remarkable way the actual storyline remains the same. This is easily visible when comparing Beowulf, the new verse translation by Seamus Heaney, and Beowulf, the graphic novel written and illustrated by Gareth Hinds. There are many similarities between the two versions, as both begin with the Beowulf/ Grendel fight, then continue with the fight between Beowulf and Grendel's mother, and ending with the death of Beowulf against the dragon. However, there are several important changes made by Hinds that can be observed.
There once was a village, where the villagers enjoyed partying and they often grew loud in their partying. They had a neighbor who was quite lonely and was jealous of the villagers fun and loud noises. This neighbor was a troll named Grendel and he began to terrorized the villagers for their partying. The villagers were so frightened of Grendel that they boarded up their Town hall and hid in their homes for fear that Grendel would return. After twelve winters word of the villagers problems spread across the land and sea to the far away kingdom of the Geats, who had a great warrior whose name was Beowulf. The brave Beowulf met with the leader of the villagers, a man named Hrothgar, and promised him that he would stop the troll, Grendel. So that night Beowulf and his fellow warriors partied to draw out the troll and wait for his arrival.
An obvious difference between the two versions is the language employed. The original version is written in Old English while the translated text is written in modern English. Old English poets use poetical techniques that varied depending on the cultural context of the poem as well as the language of origin. Such techniques are not accessible to modern translators and poets. The modern reader cannot access the Old English narrative and myths that the poet of “Beowulf” used to draw several allusions and parallels.
The story of Beowulf is one of, if not the most, popular, Norse myths of all time, mainly because most of them were destroyed. A story about bravery and self identity, a favorite among many. It has been translated many many times, thus being the problem, nobody knows the true story, the way it was told the first time or the time after that, was he really a leader, did he really fight Grendel 's mother, was he even a man? Okay, some of those questions may be a little extreme but no one really knows how the story truly went unless they were there when it was being told and if they were there, that is if it actually happened. Either way, no matter what translation the readers read or what movie they watch, it is still a good inspiring story. One
