My Writing History Have you ever thought about your writing history? I know I have. Writing is essential for everything that we do, like work, school, communication, etc.Humans needs to be able to write so they can communicate effectively. Everyone starts in kindergarten learning the alphabet, then they go to writing simple sentences, then complex. After that, they go to junior high and get into writing essays, then they get into high school and they start writing longer and more in depth essays. By the end of high school, they should write on a college level. My writing history was extremely similar to that. My mom prepared me to write when I was very young. She made sure I was ready for school when I started kindergarten. My elementary school …show more content…
It was the first time I had to write an argument essay but again, my teacher made it very simple for us to understand. She taught us how to write a claim, a counterclaim, how to present evidence in a clear way, and how to prove the evidence with warrants. Basically everything you need for an argument essay. She taught me a lot about word choice and grammar, but the thing I remember the most was she taught me how to make my sentences flow. Before then I had really choppy sentences and I had a really hard time putting them together, but she made it very easy. My second artifact from my writing history is an essay that I wrote for the same teacher but this one was supposed to entertain. I hadn’t written something that was supposed to entertain my audience since Mighty Authors and it was really hard for me. Luckily, we did peer reviews, I got a lot of feedback and I grew a lot from that essay. I learned how to make people laugh and how to show my personality in an essay. The third artifact from my writing history is an essay that I wrote for my eleventh grade english class and it was my first essay that I think is on college level. It was a narrative about a story from my childhood and it was meant to entertain my audience. I believe I did a really good job on it. I had good flow in my sentences, it was clear and concise, I had no spelling or grammar mistakes, and I think overall, the essay fulfilled its purpose to entertain. The first day of my junior year I was extremely overwhelmed by this class; all the essays we were required to write in the first week didn't help much either. However, since the beginning of the year I have learned so many useful and important lessons which have guided my learning throughout this first semester and, I'm assuming, will continue to guide me for the rest of my high school experience and beyond. In addition, I have made many goals which pertain to essays I have written, and I believe I have met those goals.
The assignment I am most proud of so far in the semester is my common application essay. The essay required me to dig into a part of my past that is very emotional for me. Even though this was hard the final part of the essay highlighted my achievements and for that reason writing this essay gave me a sense of accomplishment in my journey. As for my past, I had various writing assignments that my teachers asked me to do, such as character analysis essays, persuasive essays, and compare and contrast essays. Many of these essays I have truly enjoyed, such as the persuasive essay, however others, I really struggled at, such as the character analysis. Furthermore, I had others that I was at standard level at them, yet, they needed a lot of improvement in many ways. Last year, as for memorable things that teachers told me, was that I had a lot of trouble in the thesis statement structure, which however, affected the rest of the writing. Knowing all my mistakes now, moreover getting more advice this year, I hope that I will make huge progress.
Writing has always been a difficult subject for me to tackle throughout my education. I enjoy writing academic essays and rhetorically analyzing in research papers but not personal narratives of any sort. In this class, there was a combination of both, which helped me to continue to grow as a writer. During this semester, I have learned several valuable things in this class and gained a lot of knowledge to use in future academic classes. From different styles of writing, how to analyze images, MLA format, rhetorical analysis, and structuring my writing to an online audience. Even though this class initially seemed to be a difficult task, going through the entire semester beginning to end has helped make writing a more achievable challenge.
English has never been one of my strengths. I hate reading books and writing papers. I only did them because I had to. College English and High School English are nothing alike. The expectations for College essays are much higher than that of High School essays. What may have been an A on a high school essay may be a D on a college paper. In college English, the main essay type is classical argumentation. An argumentative essay focuses on whether the writer can construct a well-developed argument that persuades his/her audience. The transition from high school level writing to college level writing has been a little bit hard for me to grasp, because it was something I had never done before. This is the first essay that I wrote for class. I was extremely nervous writing my first "college paper" but I ended up enjoying it very much. Although my writing skills and technique are a little unorganized and choppy, I can honestly say that this paper was the one that I most challenged myself creatively. It was pretty hard putting such awesome experiences into mere words, but I did my best. In the beginning of the semester, the first essay I wrote in college was a literacy autobiography about myself academically. I talked how I wasn’t the best at writing essays and the struggles that I encountered. Furthermore, into the semester, there was one writing project that I found that I could voice out an issue that I care about, such as discrimination against Asian Americans. Now for a fourth grader that’s a big deal, especially with the pressure my parents would put me under at such a young age to do well in school. The year ended and I had finally gotten rid of her. Fifth grade came and went so smoothly, without the numerous detention slips and principal office visits. I went back during my high school sophomore year to an open house because my brother went to that school and I saw her.
Before entering this class, I dreaded writing. The effort and time needed to create a well written essay was laborious and tedious. I had too many ideas and I never prepared or planned for an assignment.
My grammar and sentence structure have improve dramatically. But I still got a lot of work to do with my grammar and mechanics. I always pay close attention to the comments and corrections made by the teacher. Each draft that I submitted came back with a lot of useful suggestions to help me write a better paper and also become a better writer. I now realized that I have so much to learn, my grammar, APA or MLA format, punctuation and sentence structures.
I never had any interest in writing before entering high school, I never enjoyed writing essays. I believe the reason was I did not find it necessary to write a 5-page essay on 'To Kill a Mockingbird '. In the real world we will write a page or two for job opportunities and some for the job itself, but hardly ever will you need to write an essay on some book or event in time;
