“I believe that I’m at least competent as a writer as I can usually fluidly express ideas, but those technical skills will be even further crucial once I enter college and the adult world. The sooner I can learn these skills to better my writing, the better prepared I’ll be for any writing situation I find myself in the future.” When I entered the class of Front Range Composition on January 10th, I was armed only with my expectations of what I hoped to learn and the basic writing knowledge I had gained from other classes. These two areas were “employing rhetorical knowledge and using sources and evidence”. On paper, it sounds remarkably simple. Rhetorical context means you think about who your audience is and write accordingly, and proper citation means you reference other people you pulled information from right? Absolutely. What college writing will teach you, however, is these are extremely important areas to consider and develop, and if not accomplished correctly, can severely hinder your writing and your credibility as a writer. There was a bit of apprehension as I opened the folder to look at the feedback provided as I constantly feel embarrassed by mistakes I produce, especially easily preventable ones. I observed the wide range of comments, some favorable, but a majority constructive. I cruised through page to page until I saw a quote that slapped me across the face with how ludicrous a mistake I made. “This summary is identical to the summary of a different source listed on page 4. Obviously, this impacts your credibility with readers”. Summaries were required for each of the sources we selected, and I somehow managed to include the same one for two sources. The lesson here was clear: for assignments I come across as massive as these, it is extremely vital to take all the time needed to confirm my credibility is as rock solid as

I have always known that writing was not my strong point. Entering writing 101 in September I was very much afraid. I knew that the expectations would be very high for this course; thus it would be more difficult than any other writing class I had previously taken. At first writing was a nightmare for me, but thanks to the assistance from professor Smart and my tutors, I have improved drastically in my writing skills and, as a result I am now a better writer. During the course of four months, I have learned so much. There were a few bumps in the way throughout the semester, but I managed to overcome them. It is hard to believe that my journey in writing 101 is coming to an end. Through my hard work and dedication, this class has helped me to build confidence in my writing that will help me throughout my college life.
There is no denying that students are bombarded daily with an exorbitant amount of data. It comes at them in every direction and it does not look like it will be lessening any time soon. As a matter of fact, I predict it will only get worse. More and more data is flung at them every day. With the Internet being a highly enriched source of information where one can find information about anything from cartoons to x-rays, determining what information is credible and what is not is a time-consuming task. It is like synthesizing iron from the iron core, where steps involved in the synthesis play a very critical role. So what is a student to do in this age of information overload when confronted with doing research? How do they sift through the enormous amount of information? This paper will discuss what criteria should be considered when gathering evidence. There are numerous pieces that any student can look for to deem a source reliable. Here are a few to mention and that will be discussed and compared: author’s qualifications, currency of the information, accuracy of information, the writing style, is there objective reasoning about the information and lastly intuition about information. After I explore these topics in depth and point out the pros and cons of each category, I will impress upon you the answer to this question: What is the best criteria to consider when looking for good credible information when writing a research paper?
‘I am going to fail’ was the very first thought that crept into my mind on that very first day of class. Before I stepped into the classroom on the first day, I felt pretty good about my writing. I had done previously well in English, and didn’t think this class would be much of a challenge. This all changed on the first day of school, when my professor talked about the level of reading and writing expected for this class. I remember thinking ‘I don’t read, why couldn’t I have been born someone who likes to read?!’ Since this moment on the very first day of class, I have grown immensely through hard work. In this essay, I will explain what I have learned over the course of this class about myself, and about writing.

For as long as I can remember, I have had interesting situations with reading and write. Like everyone, it started with one word like mom or dad. While trying to learn, letter and number, some television shows would be the perfect way to learn. Just as my parents currently encourage me to take on any challenging opportunity, they also always took the opportunity to challenge me in my childhood as an attempt to broaden my skills and knowledge. Because my mom was from Ecuador, her entire side of the family spoke Spanish to each other.
One of the biggest and most repetitive mistakes that I made in my summaries was using a wrong APA reference. Originally I referred to an online APA generator. After speaking to professor Beach, I learned to refer to the APA reference for an electronic book shown in the Little Seagull handbook for most of the sources. My first two summaries did not have a full thesis so I created a thesis for each summary. My first two summaries also had a few unnecessary quotes that should’ve been paraphrased. In my second summary, I used a double citation when quoting another author. After learning that I should not quote another author’s work that I did not individually read, I changed the citation and included the citation from the author of the article
I sincerely appreciate the opportunity you have provided for me and my fellow students the past few weeks. The experience I have had with your fourth grade class has given me a sense of personal accomplishment while meeting the requirements for our writing unit. I have learned so much about your students and their ever growing writing abilities throughout my time with them. Although our time was limited, I am proud to say they have each grown as writers and as individuals. Although they may have been weary at first, each student opened up to me in their own way.

This quote is true because it created new perspectives in my life and it shaped who I am. When I entered my AP Literature class, I had a smile in my face because I was ready learn how to improve in reading and writing. I always received a C in reading and writing; it was never for me and my smile always disappeared.

As a result of using credible sources in the base of a paper, writers can state their fresh opinion while still being in touch with the roots of a subject. This process is especially important for students because they need to write arguments for a wide variety of subjects. Therefore, students often rely on other sources to create trustworthy contents. In order to accomplish this, students need to acquire the necessary abilities to differentiate between credible and non-credible resources.
I have never considering writing to be one of my strong suites when it came it academics, perhaps adequate at best. Especially when it came to writing on a subject based on information or statistics, however after the last few essays, not only do I have a new found confidence in my writing skills, but I’m incredibly excited to write about new and more challenging subjects. The last three essays walked me through the writing process slowly but surely, challenging me a little more each time. As I approached the next assignment I took what I had learned from the previous one and made sure to apply it to the assignment I was currently working on.
Some people are lucky enough to discover what they are meant to be at an early age. I was lucky enough to find out what I was not meant to be—a writer. I first suspected that my writing abilities were subpar during the regular assignments I was given in the fourth grade. While my classmates easily filled up sheets of notebook paper with descriptions of their summers and weekends, I could barely (and sometimes didn’t) meet the minimum length requirement. I struggled to find the words to express what I wanted to say, and I often found myself hastily scribbling down a conclusion to a half-finished argument as my time ran out.
Though writing can be fun and creative, it is not really my best skill. Writing can be very challenging for me but also some time where I can write out my deepest thoughts. Through the years of writing, being given multiple assignments from classes can make it seem boring or challenging. Having to go by a certain format to focus on or even limiting all to one subject. Honestly, it wouldn’t really bother me that much since I would quickly go through the assignment.
As I look back on my schooling I can’t believe how many papers I’ve written throughout my life. Naturally as I’ve grown up, my writing has developed from learning how to write sentences all the way up to the pages of essays that consist of deeper criteria. I know for a fact that I’m a better writer now than I was before. College writing is more challenging and I’ve had to learn how to adjust to it.
When I was younger I was a very difficult student. Throughout pre school and junior kindergarten I found it challenging to do school work and sit still, so my mom decided to homeschool me. From what I could remember it was really beneficial for me. I could have breakfast with my mom and we would learn together and she would make it fun and so much more enjoyable, until “journaling” time. My mom believes that the best form of communication and self expression is through writing, whether that be a letter or a journal or even making lists, my mom was very keen on writing.
