I completely agree with the statement that now as a writer, my abilities, and styles are always evolving. At the beginning I thought I’d just take this course as a way to relax; perhaps have more time to focus on more of my heavy subjects. I learnt that this is not at all true. Writing is a beautiful art that is capable of overcoming you with emotion. It can bring you happiness, as well as sadness. I never thought that I could be so consumed with something in my life. When I was younger I didn’t know exactly what I was good at; I didn’t have a passion. I was ‘meh’ at sports, and, ‘bleh’ when it came to drawing. Personally I believed that I- myself was just a lost cause. Although I was excited to find out what I was good at, something I could improve on, and constantly thought about finding something that would make happy again. …show more content…
Keep in mind I did enjoy English, I liked structure and proper outlines. However this class changed my outlook on English as a whole. After this class I noticed the little things clicking together. Creative ideas that seemed meaningless at one point, slowly but surely colliding into something so engaging. I can proudly say that this course has helped me in so many ways. It has strengthened my writing abilities, as well as given me a certain level of confidence I was lacking in my work. Although I’d at times be reluctant to share my work, I also found it rather helpful when I would. If something sounded wordy, I could always ask the person next to me for help. In addition, the class also created a very safe and positive environment for us to share in, it is often rather hard to share at times because you feel vulnerable, but there is always great feedback, along with some constructive
The focal point of Chapter 4 of Successful College Writing is on how to critically read and decipher text and visuals. It highlights the importance of not just looking at the surface of the words, but diving into their true meaning. Authors put every word and picture into their work for a reason, and it is your job to ensure that you do not fall victim to biases and false information. It is crucial to learn how to identify author's tones, opinions, and overall purpose in their writings. Learning how to analyze these patterns will better equip you in acquiring accurate information and also not adopting these deceptive techniques yourself.
English 101 is one of the most common college courses in the world. When I enrolled in the class, I was bothered that I would have spend forty hours in a freshman writing class; along with at least another forty hours throughout the semester writing for the class. What surprised me, was that when I began writing my essays I was not annoyed or bothered; I actually enjoyed the assignments. Most importantly, throughout the course of the semester, I have become a better writer and have ultimately met the course goals of English 101.
Entering this course I was worried because I have struggled with writing in the past, and writing has never been my strongest area. I feared writing classes in middle and high school, and had the same expectations for this course. I had wondered if I was ready for college English, and was worried that my skills and abilities would not be one the level they needed to be for college courses. My attitude and understanding of my writing process have both changed since the beginning of this semester. One thing that really helped my attitude and confidence was the fact that I was able to complete the assignments and get a decent grade. I was worried that I might not be able to do college level writing, and when I started completing the assignments and learning new ways to write my confidence and attitude changed. Another thing that really helped me throughout this course was that there was plenty of reading and information available to guide me through my assignments. I realized that there was more freedom when it comes to writing than I had experienced in high school. Being able to write more freely, and the freedom to choose what subjects I would write over made the assignments more enjoyable and easier to
My biggest improvement in this English 111 class was my writing. Writing tasks that were assigned greatly strengthened my overall performance throughout the course, preparing me for the future classes. The environment made me feel at ease, helping me evolve as a student, and as a person. The environment made me feel at ease, preparing me for future classes. Another large achievement of mine that I displayed in the class, was my ability to talk comfortably with the other students. Beginning in grade school students are taught a basic curriculum for English, some of the basics being: five sentences equaling a paragraph and five paragraphs equaling a essay. The beginning of the English learning stage is a time to get engaged in reading and writing. Honestly, most children when they are younger start loving to read and write but do they stay that way throughout middle school, high school, or even college? No, nine out of ten times kids who started out loving to read and write end up dreading it. But why? Every students has their own personal reason. Some may have never fully understood how to read or write and was to embarrassed to speak up others may have disorders such as dyslexia which makes reading and writing difficult. In my case I had a passion for reading and writing when I was younger. As I grew up I did not like the material that had to be read or the papers that was required to be written; but since I knew the work had to be done accurately in order for me to pass the class I learned to tolerate the subject.
Most of us write in some form every day, so you would expect that most of us would be well practiced and pretty good at writing. I read and write all the time; I have been taken several college courses and nearly all of them require write of some form. However, before taking this class not only was I not a good writer, I knew I wasn’t a good writer. Now I am not saying that I am ready to write my first novel, but I certainly more confident in turning in my college papers. The content of this course and the style of teaching was incredibly beneficial to me. Throughout this course we had multiple assignments that were aimed to improve us as writers. I am sure that everyone took something different from this course, and I am sure that each student took more from some areas than others; however for me there were three major things that I saw that I benefited from most. Our weekly craft lessons, grammar plan, but most of all, observational learning.
Throughout this semester, I was able to learn many writing skill and was able to develop as a writer. When I found out that I was scheduled to be in English Composition I, I was very nervous as I have always felt that writing was one of the skills that I needed to improve on. Although I usually received good grades on my essays, I did not like writing them since it would always take me more than five hours to write a one page essay. If I wanted a good grade in English Composition I, I knew that I was definitely going to have to improve on my grammars. The main skills that we learned in this class were writing a clear thesis statement, paragraph structures, and sensory details. Through this class, I was able to attain more knowledge in these areas and gain confidence in my writing skills. As consumers we are exposed to a number of texts on a daily basis, these texts can be anything from movie posters to books to DVD covers, from these, assumptions are made as to what the product, movie or book is about. Throughout this essay, Magnolia will undergo a textual analysis; more specifically this essay will provide the most likely interpretation of the text from the audiences view. The concepts of semiotics, framing and genre will be used throughout to help in the discussion and “investigation into how meaning is created and communicated” (Fruend 2013).
Writing doesn’t come easily to me, which must make me a glutton for punishment. It has taken me years of training, learning to structure an essay and unlearning to begin again. Only since attending HSU am I realizing how exceptional my writing has become. Over the course of two semesters, I have seen my writing expand and grow. While I still adhere to the training I received in high school, I am excited to now take these tools and develop my own unique style in the years to come.
When I started this class I thought I was somewhat alright writer. I understood the basics of writing and believed I knew how to write an entertaining piece. All of the papers we wrote showed me one of my weaknesses as a writer.
Personally, I believe that I have gained valuable knowledge in my English classes. Recently, I am about to end my third English course of college and it has been a good experience, those courses helped and influenced a lot in my writing. I believe I did more than just improve my writing skills. I received some rhetorical and genre knowledge, and learned about the writing process and how to appropriately enter a conversation without losing my own style of writing.
In summary, I had an enjoyable time in my first college English class. I pushed myself as diligently as I could and learned much more than I thought I would. In addition to, my strengths grew stronger and my weaknesses improved as well. I acknowledge I still have some techniques and skills to work on; however, I am willing to put the time in and cannot wait to take English in the future. After taking this course I learned an abundance of information. Many of the things I learned were about myself as a writer. Coming into this class I felt confident in my ability to write a paper. This was mainly because in high school and previous college writing courses I always got an A with almost no effort. However, this course changed my mind almost completely.
What I like the most in this class is that I can write anything I am interested in. Different from other English course, the instructor gives us freedom to choose our own topic. It is easier for me to write because I know what to write and how to write it. This is different from writing on a given topic in TOEFL, GRE, and ELPE exams. It is hard for me to write a well-developed essay in a limited time. In this class, I have enough time to develop and revise my draft until I am satisfied about it.
Walking myself into this course I was nervous about the class. I was worried about if my time management and the whole English aspect was going to work. English is not my best subject and is one I struggle with. Although as time went by I enjoyed an abundant amount of assignments that were assigned.
