My World of Reading and Writing
Learning to read has been a great gift to me, I would have been lost without it. I started out young with a passion for books. Any type of story would do, scary or friendly, as long as I could picture what was happening. I hated books with pictures because it took away from my imagination. I loved letting my imagination run wild with every detail.
Growing up my parents encouraged my passion for reading. They bought me all the children's books I wanted. I would read almost every night before bed, filing my dreams with princesses and heroes. From then on I could not put a book down. I yearned to learn more about what was hidden deep within the pages. I loved trying to figure out different ways the story could end, it made the story more interesting.
In school I was given a library card, boy did it ever open up a world of wonder. Once a week the book mobile would come to school and I would be allowed to sort through a variety of books for the perfect one. The best thing was that my neighbor worked on the book mobile and when I returned home from school, she would have extra books for me to read. I could also go to the public library and check out as many books as I wanted, for it has tons of books to sort through.
My passion grew as I grew older. I would curl up on my bed at night, alone with the radio on, and escape from the hectic day I had. My taste in books also changed from make believe fairy-tails to mystery and truth. Life in the past fascinates me and not just any, but Indians, Quakers and the Holocaust. I love learning about the trials and tribulations of people in history and how they over came them.
Reading all around opens my mind to a whole new world. It shows...

... become so frustrated and can not think of something to write, I change the subject for awhile. I write down my feeling which in turn gets my juices flowing. I become more relaxed and it allows me to focus on what I have to say in the paper. My mind opens up. Everything seems to be much clearer and things begin to flow and the paper gets finished in one day with the exception of having to proofread and tying up the loose ends.
All together I have learned a lot about reading and writing. Things seem much more interesting in the world because I am able to learn about what is taking place. I have a way to learn about different places and people, even write letters to others who are from a different country. I believe that life is much simpler with the knowledge of knowing how to read and write, for the lines of communication between people is crucial to survival.
My parents have always stressed the importance of reading. Throughout my whole life, they have motivated me to read and they have encouraged me to find books that I find interesting to read. Because of their encouragement, I am an avid reader today. When I was a child, just starting to enjoy reading I liked to read books that were fiction. Some of my favorite books to read as a child are series that I still love today and I think I still have every book in each series stored in my attic. They are The Boxcar Children, Junie B. Jones, and The Magic Tree House.
Instead of mom reading children’s books to me, I read them to her. And if I stumbled upon something I didn’t know or understand, mom helped me out! Soon enough I started reading to her without stuttering of not knowing how to say a word. I started being able to sound out words easier and my fluency became much better than before. First grade came around and I started reading bigger books such as Junie B. Jones and also the Magic Treehouse books. Books became easier to read as I aged and the books I read were getting bigger and bigger. In 5th and 6th grade I read The Red Pyramid, The Throne of Fire, and The Serpents Shadow, a trilogy called The Kane Chronicles written by Rick Riordan. I thought these three books were the greatest three books ever written! I even thought they were better than the hunger games! Especially with the series being based around Egyptian gods and theology, and also managed to tie in kids around my age that I could relate to. Those books made me love reading more than I ever have and I would read them again if I had the time to. Once 8th grade came out along I decided to read a “big boy” book: DaVinci Code by Dan Brown. I thought I was so cool because I was reading a book that my parents have read. It has been the best book I have yet to read so far because it sparked my interest from the first sentence, to the last, there was intense suspense throughout the whole book and I could nonstop
My dad taught me that books could be my teachers, my mom taught me that our backyard could be my classroom, and my sister showed me that you could bring books into the swimming pool. I did not know it when I would spend hours in the pool reading a book that my parents weren’t encouraging it in vain, but my family life, for good reason, was centered on books. We were the planets orbiting around one sun that was the bookshelf. Little did I know that books would be the catalyst to academic success in my early life, and I owe it all to my family. Although a life with a book in your nose might seem boring, I was never bored. Living through the characters vicariously, I explored Narnia with Lucy, attended Hogwarts with Harry, and rode dragons with Eragon. Of course
As a child, I have always been fond of reading books. My mother would read to me every single night before I went to bed and sometimes throughout the day. It was the most exciting time of the day when she would open the cabinet, with what seemed to be hundreds of feet tall, of endless books to choose from. When she read to me, I wanted nothing more than to read just like her. Together, we worked on reading every chance we had. Eventually I got better at reading alone and could not put a book down. Instead of playing outside with my brothers during the Summer, I would stay inside in complete silence and just read. I remember going to the library with my mom on Saturdays, and staying the entire day. I looked forward to it each and every week.
Besides this immersion into a world of books, I credit my love of reading to the fact that my parents only let me watch an hour of TV a day. I learned to use my mind and imagination to entertain myself. It's not really surprising that literature became my vocation. When not reading or writing, I enjoy watching films, baking, going to the city to eat Thai and Ethiopian food, walking, and relaxing with my friends.
Children love to read because it nurtures their imagination. Three books that are must reads for children everywhere and of all ages are Winnie the Pooh, Millions of Cats, and If You Give A Mouse A Cookie.. Winnie the Pooh teaches them lessons about friendship, responsibility, and how to have fun. The book Millions of Cats teaches children that there is always going to be something else that we want, even when we already have something that fulfills our needs. And lastly, the book If You Give A Mouse A Cookie teaches children that it is okay to ask for one or two things but that we should not keep bothering someone to ask them for things we want over and over again.
Throughout school reading and writing has impacted me greatly in many ways. Being an advanced reader at a young age made it possibly to set myself apart from other students and shine brightly in areas that others could not. It also has helped to change my perspective on things in life, when reading about true events happening
One of my favorite childhood books is by Dr. Seuss; it is called “Are You my Mother?” Even before I learned to read myself, this book was being read to me. Thinking back to the early years of my life, I always remember someone reading to me. Every night in my house I would have one, if not both, of my parents read to me and I always looked forward to that. That is where my passion for reading began.
I used to have to take these tests about all the books I would read in school and I would always ace them all. I knew that reading was something I liked because I was always very intrigued by it. Also in middle school I found my true writing voice. I remember taking a creative writing class in six grade and I was always the student who wrote more than what was expected for my writing assignments. I would write stories about things such as my friends and the experiences that I had in school. Sometimes I would even write my own plays and in my plays the characters would be people in family and people from school. I would always try to make the plot super interesting in my plays. One time I wrote a play about my brothers and me traveling to space and finding aliens. Overall, I really fell in love with literacy throughout my middle school years because I was able to read books more at an advance level and I also was able to write more intense stories. Literacy has been a positive influence in my life all throughout my school
I also remember as young girl learning how to read and my favorite book that I could quote word for word was “Green Eggs and Ham” by Dr.Suess. I loved that book so much I still have that today. As I got older my love for reading and books started to diminish, I went to a private school for my elementary years and their curriculum was very intense. It was required to read a book from their approved list and complete a book report each summer before the school year began. Not to mention the numerous books reports I would have to complete during the school. At an early age books and reading was something I had to do and not what I wanted to do.
Books have been a very big thing in all portions of my life and lead me to my love of reading.
Dr. Seuss, a well-known writer, said in ‘I Can Read with My Eyes Shut’, “The more that you read, the more that you will know. The more that you learn, the more places that you will go.” My greatest passions are art and math, but reading is like another world full of wonder, surprises, and mysteries. I will not say that some of the best things I have ever done are thanks to reading because that would be a lie, but I can say that some of the best things I have learned have occurred because of what a book can hold within its pages. There are people in this world that love to read.
My parents instilled a passion for reading in me even as a toddler; years later, an excellent,

I don’t remember a day in which I haven’t read a short story or finished a 400-page chapter book. Reading and writing has always been apart of my life; it is my passion. I would have to say my passion started to grow when my mom would read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe every night to my siblings and me. The way she would change her voice for different characters or how she could read with such fluency was astonishing to my seven-year-old self. I have dyslexia with some of my letters, so I knew if I ever wanted to be like my mother, I would have to practice and practice.
