Culture is important for many reasons to the classroom setting. It allows for more enrichment in student learning and understanding and allows for an understanding of why it is necessary to educate and learn about each culture. For my first cultural event, I attended a Catholic Gospel Choir Mass. It was very interesting and unique unlike any other Mass I have ever attended. From this Mass, I learned a lot and also felt like it taught me more about the Catholic Faith and how community plays into our Faith. I attended St. Augustine’s Church on West Washington Street in South Bend. This Church offers two Masses on Sundays, an 8:30 Mass which is considered to be their normal Mass and a 10:30 Gospel Choir Mass. I attended the later as I …show more content…
The atmosphere of this Church was pleasant and quaint. The whole Church consisted of seventeen half pews and ten choir members as well as about sixty Congregation members. This Church as well as the Altar were one of the smallest I have ever seen, yet I think that provided a sense of unity and solidarity. Even the Stations of the Cross were small and delicate enough to hang on one half of a wall, surrounding the Altar. The decorative pictures that were on the walls of the Church were also different from any paintings I have ever experienced. I was most surprised by the painting of the Last Supper which depicted Jesus and all if the Disciples as African American. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this image, it just caught me off-guard as my home Parish is primarily consistent of Caucasian people and therefore our Church depicts the Last Supper with all Caucasian people. I expected this Mass to mostly consist of African American people as well as Hispanic people due to the demographics of the surrounding area. However, I was surprised to see the lack of Hispanic people and the equal amounts of African American and Caucasian people in attendance of this Mass. I was also very surprised to see that the majority of the Congregation was elderly people. This surprised me the most because I attribute Gospel Choir to something less traditional and I typically …show more content…
Which seem contradictory to the world we currently live in. The people I celebrated Mass with today did not think twice about shaking my hand or singing next to me, even though we came from different backgrounds and shared different cultural identities. I believe that after this event, I am more aware of how important and beautiful it is to profess and share your Faith with those that are different than you. Since attending this event I would be more likely to challenge my student’s beliefs about race, ethnicity, and Faith. In order to show them that Faith is not black or white and neither is ethnicity. The humble beginnings of this Church allowed for a humble community that saw no need for segregation, it only saw the need for a common place to share Faith with one another. I would also challenge my students and families (depending on their age) to attend events like this that challenge their beliefs and allow for a renewed perspective of the world. I also would make a very conscious effort to institute different types of artwork and reading material into my classroom so that students do not grow up only thinking that Jesus and all of His followers were Caucasian. Lastly, I would be sure to continually provide new examples of famous people that share various ethnicities, so that a student from any ethnicity can make connections and relate to each
The church's architecture over all is simple. It is 24 by 34 square feet and set on a stone wall. It is a frontier style cabin and is made from hand hewn logs, which are notched at each end so that they fit together snugly at the corners. The roof is shingled...
There were people of many different ethnicities and social standings present, yet everyone was treated the same. Everyone was equal in the sight of God and in the sight of everyone that gathered there. These believers all served each other and made a point to help those that were in need. This included helping the poor people that had absolutely
In my paper I will talk about my visit to The Community Church at Murphy's Landing (CCML). I have chosen this particular Church because it is a family church type and my neighbor goes there and she encouraged me to go with her. I went there with my neighbor on April 6, 2014.This church is an appropriate for this assignment because the people there are welcoming me with an open heart and they are willing to help and provide me with information. When I visit the Church’s site I read these words “We know visiting a new church can be intimidating. But, we want to help you to be as comfortable as possible when and if you join us”. The people gather in the church weekly to glorify God in joyful worship. The expressions of worship on CCML take many forms a prayer, a hymn of reverent awe, a guitar ringing with a chorus of praise, or a warm handshake and a welcoming smile. Their weekly services begin at 9:30 each Sunday at church. Also, they have weekly podcast if anyone wants to listen online. They have many types of services for parents, kids and students. People at CCML were so friendly; they gather around me and start welcoming me, one by one. People there introducing themselves to me, one after another and provide me with their contact information and help. Then we start talking about the church services and Christianity in particular. The mission of CCML was knowing, growing and loving. They seek to live out our mission by worshipping together as a local community of believers, growing in spiritual maturity through discipleship, education, and small groups, caring for one another within the context of the larger church body and small groups, and Communicating the love of Christ to our world, both through local outreach and global mis...
What is culture? Culture is such a complex concept that it is not defined by one simple thing. When studying the culture of a particular group of people we look at their beliefs, fashion, art, music and even food. By simply trying food from a particular culture we can learn much about its history and even geography. Recently I had the opportunity to try authentic Peruvian cuisine. Not only did I get to try new food and get to learn about a new culture, I also got to be able to compare it to my own Colombian culture.
Unfortunately, through the ages women have been unfairly held back in their ability to lead churches from the pulpit. From a historical perspective this issue is pervasive in mostly all churches whether black or white. The issues of sexism and woman 's rights in the black community often take a back seat to racial issues. It was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Injustices also happen in the church. Discrimination, based on gender bias, in the pulpit is a huge injustice to women, especially black women. The success of past and present churches is largely due to the efforts of women who make up more than a majority of most church congregations. Yet the responsibility to lead those same churchgoers is reserved for a man. What a travesty. The chapter eluded to women holding positions of leadership in Christian churches under titles such as exhorters, evangelists, and missionaries, but this does not do justice to the pivotal work that African-American women perform in the church. Regrettably for the Black Church, many black women have chosen to seek ministry opportunities in white denominations as they have shown more progressive attitudes toward accepting women as leaders in the church setting. Women have shown themselves to be pivotal in the church and are more or less the backbone to the body of believers to whom they serve,
Culture is an important aspect to the society we live in today. With the economy so hard to live in, it’s making it harder for the individuals to meet their needs. There are many cultures that are around the world that is different in many ways. One way that many cultures come together is through the cultural events today. Cultural events are events pertaining to cultures, such as a feast or festivals. By attending cultural events, you experience firsthand the diverse offering of culture and artistic expression found in a community. The Essence Music Festival and the Mardi Gras are two of the festivals that many people attend for all over the world.
It was magnificent. The first thing to catch my eye was a monstrous chandelier that hung from the 50 foot ceiling. It was awe inspiring. As my eyes surveyed the room, it was hard to miss the antique maple pews that provided seats for approximately 300 people. Plush emerald green carpet was the grounding to the room. It's path led directly up to the stage which was home to a variety of items. The band, pulpit, arid baptismal were the most obvious. Above the stage was a huge dome, it was colored in shades of blue, mauve, white, and several other soft accents. A bright light was right in the center of its point. Our gazing was soon interrupted when the official greeter returned. This time she was quick and to the point. She collected our cards and informed us that service was about to begin. Within a matter of minutes, a middle-aged man stepped up to the pulpit and asked us to stand.
On Sunday March 12th and 19th, my husband and I attended Holy Trinity St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church (HTSN) in Finneytown, Ohio. The church conducts Orthros (Matins) at 8:15 am and Divine Liturgy from 9:30-11:30 am. I chose to attend HTSN for two reasons; first, they host the annual Panegyri Festival and two, learning about the 1054 split intrigued me given the current state of the Methodist Church.
While the outside was plain and filled with light, I could not help but think that the setting of the interior of the church seemed rather somber and caliginous. There were rows upon rows of seating for the members of the church that all faced towards colossal artistic depictions of religious figures, especially Jesus Christ, placed behind the altar in which they used for the service. The most eye-catching was the rounded painted ceiling which showed an emaciated Jesus ascending into Heaven after he was crucified. Along every row, hanging on the adjacent wall, was a small statue illustrating what seemed to be the different events in the Passion. They seemed to go in chronological order, eventually leading up to a front statue of the crucifiction.
There was a large stain glass window with a picture of the cross, in brown, with yellow, purples, and finally blue surrounding it like rays of light. Right beneath the window was rock garden that had plagues, crosses, and flowers which memorialized members of the church who had passed. Around the corner to the entrance of the church, a priest robed in green stood greeting the parishioner’s as they entered. On the left was a statue of Jesus holding a small child which was dedicated to a former priest that they called Daddy Joe. The courtyards and the architecture designs certainly created a serene and peaceful atmosphere conducive to
They tach the ancient way “the old ways”. The way they preach there sermon is structured it is first reading then the second then the gospel. They have nine masses per day for different people or for they can all feel comfortable. The kind of group it is middle class. Close knit from family friends or passed down through generations.
Growing up, I was raised in a southern Baptist church setting. Every Sunday you were required to attend church which included going to Sunday school, first service, and second service. You were also required to be active in the church whether it be ushering or singing in the choir. For my foreign experience of worship I decided to attend a Catholic church. At first I was a bit skeptical about stepping outside of my background history of worship because I thought that attending a Catholic church may change some of my beliefs or practices. I will admit before my attendance to this Catholic Church I had negative thoughts and was determined that my paper would be only about negative experience that I had. Once I entered the church all of my negative thoughts were out of my mind. Prior to researching background information I really didn’t think that Catholics and Baptist had a lot in common, besides their belief in the faith of Jesus Christ. In my essay about my Catholic Church experience I will describe the physical setting of the church, tell you about the church service, and lastly tell
They seemed to getting across to the community. If I could give an advice I would say keep doing what you are doing, keep following the same leadership, and taking instruction from him, keep practicing the level of worship that you are, stay true to God and what he has for you and your church. I see that what this church is doing is an effective moment in the community. Souls are being saved the homeless are being feed, and the less fortunate are being
As I was attending mass, I noticed, it was very organized. There was a lot of sitting and standing, where I found myself struggling to understand. I noticed that they read some passages from the bible and sang a lot of psalms and hymns. The only thing that was familiar to me was the Eucharist.
The building was a significant size with no Idols of saints, Virgin Mary’s or Crosses as they are seemed as object which should to them that should
