For me, tutoring has been a wonderful life-long experience. I admit that at first, since it was my first time tutoring a student that I was nervous to tutor. I made several attempts to get a hold of the foster parent to set up a schedule. Then finally, I was able to get a hold of the foster parents and we set up the days and time. Further, the day finally came that I was going to start tutoring. I finally met the student, who was held back twice because he was moved around a lot until he came to his permanent foster home. I was in first grade and her name was Sister Carol Anne. She even spelled Anne the same way I spelled my middle name Anne which made her better. She was amazing she had this way of always making everyone in the class feel equal. We never knew who received the high grades and who received the low grades. We all were working "as hard as we could" she would say and that was all that mattered. Sister Carol also had ways of showing us how to help each other out. If a few students didn't get it then the students who did understand would teach the other students. Looking back I'm skeptical because that might unintentionally separate the students into "smart" and "stupid" groups. However, I remember that at some point or another everyone in that class needed help and everyone was able to teach. She exemplified for us that teaching is more helping and guiding instead of ruling and ordering. I think after that class was when I decided I wanted to be a teacher. It wavered on and off throughout my education but it started there in the first grade.

Before starting School Placement, I definitely had particular assumptions about school and what I was about to experience. One assumption which I think was also my biggest issue were the lesson plans. Personally, I thought these were to be followed religiously within the classroom with little room for error. Now, I can see that this is a prescriptive assumption, something that we think should be happening. In the long run this assumption didn’t help me in the slightest and so, can be also referred to as a hegemonic assumption. For me, Confidence was a main factor as to why I felt the need to stick to my lesson plans. As it was our first time out on SP, nerves were obviously a big factor at the start. As a result, I felt the need to have a plan and stick to it in order to feel at ease as I taught. Though I thought that this was helping me and my teaching I can now see that it was more of a hindrance than anything.
Going into this experience I was crapping my pants. Being a freshman student going into college for the first time. Not doing so well on the placement test was the catastrophe that landed me into English 091. So my dad already being pissed off at me, I go into the class knowing my parents are disappointed only for myself to become disappointed that I was required to drive to Chandler every Tuesday which is like twenty miles away from my house. I was mentally infuriated but I had to maintain a smile because first impressions are everything. After I mentally calmed down I realized this could be an opportunity to brag about tutoring underprivileged immigrants. When I put it that way in my mind it made my heart grow three times its size kind of like the Grinch. My expectations were not what I originally thought, my thoughts and ideas worked sometimes, and other times they didn’t, and some of the thoughts I had I would like to discuss to improve the next group of tutors.
During my time as a student I have been able to develop the way I learn and interact with others to a degree that has also helped me to mature into a better person. I have come to believe that this maturity will help me to develop into a better thinker as well, one that has the patience to listen and take consideration of what others have to say. I consider the act of learning a two way avenue that has to be taken seriously. It is one that involves the teacher, and the protégé. It has been, and will continue to be, my absolute goal as a student to become a diligent protégé and acquire all of learning my teachers have set in front of me. The way each of them have helped me to think about how my actions, and the way I choose to study my lessons and develop as a student, has made a tremendous impact on my life. This impact is one that I will carry into the future as I myself advance in my professional studies.
