I have taught school for more than twenty years both in Alaska, USA and in Ontario, Canada. I have also had my own tutoring business. I tutored children and adults in English. I taught students to read, write and speak English. I have helped many foreign students with their English. I have also helped students prepare for job interviews and write essays. I know how hard it is to learn a foreign language so I admire my students for doing this. I love teaching! We worked together to make sure that the students achieved reading comprehension. I took many education courses before I graduated as well. These include 'Elementary teaching,' 'Middle grades teaching,' 'Children's Literature,' and 'American Education.' I have also tutored essay writing for students from middle grades to university level. I taught English as a foreign language for one year at a private English academy in Iksan, South Korea. My students aged from 3-15, all in separate classes of course. As an EFL teacher I learned how to measure student competency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, as well as how to teach each category. I edited student writing for mechanical errors, punctuation, flow, and many other points. It was my job to keep every student up to speed on the school curriculum. I helped prepare some students for their high school entry English exams. For the past year I have worked as a copywriter, perfecting my writing skills. I also wrote through college, first for a two-page newsletter, then later on for school newspaper 'The East Carolinian.' For TEC I was a features reporter, interviewing people and researching my assignment before composing an engaging article. I feel comfortable with writing assignments, proofreading, teaching reading comprehension, and even guiding English language learners. I took many language courses in college, including Spanish classes, 'History of the English Language,' 'Advanced Composition,' and 'Functional Grammar.' English as a Second Language. English was not my first language. I started to learn English when I was three years old. I was able to learn English through my older sister, watching TV and being exposed to the English language from my peers. I was lucky to be able to learn a second language so young because not everyone is able to do this. My older sister had to go to ESL classes and with her being exposed having to learn English as part of her curriculum, I was then able to pick up the English language. Throughout my life, the idea of the English language has always been related to education and success. Without knowing the English language in the United States, it is difficult for students that do not know English as well to be able to succeed in America. Therefore, I would like to be able to teach English as a Second language. Although going into college, I was always on the fence about whether or not I would like to go into teaching ESL or not, I knew that I wanted to be a teacher.
Subsequently, I started volunteering back at my university in a biology lab working with Drosophila and studying Alzheimer’s and aging. My project is feeding a substance called trichostatin A to the wild type Drosophila and Drosophila with Alzheimer’s gene in order to maybe extend the life span of the Drosophila and slow down the aging. This research project gave me an ineffable encounter with the scientific exploration and fresh admiration for biomedical research. The medical field needs talented doctors and researchers with different perspectives and illuminating insights.
Korea is a Country where people speak one ethic language the Korean. Because of that fact teaching English is a business which is booming in the country. In fast changing business environment, the Koreans are forced to interact with other people from different countries. Other macro environmental factors like globalization have influenced the behavior and perceptions of the Koreans. It is in this light that they have embraced the idea of learning other languages to be in a better position to fully take advantage of the global trends and business ideas. This means it has been easier to get a sustainable market. The country is also densely populated thus the demand is high. There are English tutors in South Korea, who teach from a classroom-like setting both in private classes and public schools. Because of the high number of foreign teachers interested in teaching English, as a second Language in Korea from all over the World, some rules and legal guidelines have been put in place.

She sat there with her head tucked under her arms, crying because she failed her exam on creating the equation for a circle. She was embarrassed and discouraged. She did not understand how it was possible.
Teaching English to second language learners is a once in a lifetime opportunity I keep having over and over again. I never envisioned that year I spent teaching English to preschoolers in South Korea after I graduated from college would somehow turn into a lifelong career pursuit. I never imagined that day I first flew 18 hours over the Pacific Ocean, with nothing more than a bachelor’s degree and a naïve quest for adventure, that years later I would get recruited into military intelligence based on my experiences teaching and living in Korea. They say once you become a soldier you always remain a soldier. Yet during my four years in the military, I felt more like an English teacher who occasionally shot holes through paper targets than I ever felt like a warrior. Now that I am out of the Army, I have a new paper target, to use my GI Bill scholarship to earn a master’s degree in TESOL. While it remains to be seen whether or not earning this degree will change my future teaching practices, I have certainly come to better understand and appreciate my past experiences as a second language teacher.
Through tutoring, I was able to meet and help internationals students from Japan, China, Latvia, Pakistan, and many other cultures. Seeing their excitement and delight after I helped them understand a grammar concept or received a good grade in their classes filled me with joy. Tutoring also challenged me to figure out the best way to help each student because many of the people I worked with were from a vastly different culture from myself. Once figuring out the best way to help each student and seeing them progress solidified my love for tutoring. The JET program will give me an opportunity to implement my previously acquired tutoring skills to assist Japanese students in learning

For me, tutoring has been a wonderful life-long experience. I admit that at first, since it was my first time tutoring a student that I was nervous to tutor. I made several attempts to get a hold of the foster parent to set up a schedule. Then finally, I was able to get a hold of the foster parents and we set up the days and time. Further, the day finally came that I was going to start tutoring. I finally met the student, who was held back twice because he was moved around a lot until he came to his permanent foster home. In addition, the foster parent told me that he was behind in his reading and writing. From there on we focused on reading and writing. At first, I felt like I wasn’t doing a good job at tutoring, until progress reports came
As a graduate student in the field of science and engineering, I am constantly learning, and in the same time, I am also constantly sharing my knowledge to the undergraduate students as a teaching assistant. I have been and will be serving as a TA for my department for all four semesters (2014 Fall-2016 Spring). I have demonstrated my proficiency in teaching in various instances from leading students in laboratory courses to solving queries in theory courses, and my efforts have been recognized by the students in the end-term evaluations. I enjoy and cherish the TA experience I have, and I believe that I will keep contribute as a TA in my Ph.D. study.
I spoke English when I lived in Puerto Rico so there was no reason to put me in ESL classes. In third great I had an amazing teacher named Mrs. Thompson. In a class that had thirty plus students, she did her best to help me develop my English reading and writing skills. After third grade, my skills developed greatly but I was still not where my fourth grade teacher wanted me to be.
As I look back on my schooling I can’t believe how many papers I’ve written throughout my life. Naturally as I’ve grown up, my writing has developed from learning how to write sentences all the way up to the pages of essays that consist of deeper criteria. I know for a fact that I’m a better writer now than I was before. College writing is more challenging and I’ve had to learn how to adjust to it.
I enjoyed the time spent with my student, working with her was an incredible opportunity and experience for me and the student. We were both excited that she accomplished the goals we had set before the tutoring session started. The meeting lasted about two and a half hours. This was a great experience for me because I had the opportunity to teach a lesson. However, I was a little nervous about this being my first time tutoring a student.
