Realism, Regionalism, and Naturalism Places can impact everyone's lives. It defines who you are. The people around you, the time period that you’re in, the nature and physical features around you. These characters in each of the stories have their own special and unique way they’ve come to be who they are. It’s always interesting to see how people act, dress, and appear to others with the way they approach things from different perspectives and places they’ve lived. No matter what place you are, it can affect your mindset and personal character. Where we, in society today, can change how we view things and how we expect to be treated. This essay does a great job of showing how her choice for moving out of Mississippi was based on her place in the society at the time of being a black woman. She demonstrates that her place in Mississippi shaped her decisions as a person, by eventually leaving Mississippi and changing her life. “I fantasize about living in that fabled America.Moving across a few state lines is not going to help me escape this place that tells me I am less” (Ward) Jesmyn Ward’s thought process was altered by growing up in Mississippi. She now sees the world differently, and she’s more protective of her race. Her place impacted who she is today with the discrimination and racism she went through throughout her life. Where Jesus lived changed her perspective on life and how she saw things. “I carry every slur, every slight, every violent malign with me; they have become part of me and express themselves in my body: vascular inflammation, migraine headaches, diabetes, giving birth to both of my children prematurely.” (Ward) The places even changed Jesmyn Ward in physical ways.
