Jerald Walker’s short story ‘Dragon Slayers’ begins at a Christmas party where a white man says Walker should hate him and all of the white race. But Walker has a different outlook on this issue. Walker believes that he has to focus on black courage and overcoming the issues that lie ahead; not let oppressors define who he is. He refuses to fall into any sterotype and let racial slurs get the best of him. Walker advocates that Africa Americans cannot play the victim and must not turn to anger and violence. Africa Americans must realize their heratige and understand the pain and suffering but also the amazing hericotic and courage they had. Walker teaches an African American Literature course and all of his students have to agree to be black for the course of the semester. His students must try to critically think as a black individual. His course is not a typical African American course where the teachings only focus on white cruelty and their oppressers but black
Throughout my life I have read many books. However, “The Devil in the White City” by Erik Larson is the most impactful of them all. “The Devil in the White City” is full of manipulation, unexpected killings, and World Fair construction problems. “It was so easy to disappear, so easy to deny knowledge, so very easy in the smoke and din to mask that something dark had taken root. This was Chicago, on the eve of the greatest fair in history” (Larson). “Devil in the White City” has changed my perspective on people you do not know and the work of construction.
The chapter on fecundity addresses the bizarre ways that nature has evolved to ensure the continuity of a species. As the title suggests, fecundity deals with the fertility of species where Annie Dillard explores the inefficiency of fertility and the brutality of nature’s evolution. In the end, Dillard concludes that death is a part of life.
In "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" and "The Story of an Hour," the authors use similar techniques to create different tones, which in turn illicit very distinct reactions from the reader. Both use a third person narrator with a limited omniscient point of view to tell of a brief, yet significant period of time. In "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," Bierce uses this method to create an analytical tone to tell the story of Farquhar's experience just before death. In "The Story of an Hour," Chopin uses this method to create an involved, sympathetic tone to relay the story of Mrs. Mallard's experience just before death. These stories can be compared on the basis of their similar points of view and conclusions as well as their different tones.
The Ghostway has a mysterious, secretive plot that keeps the reader’s interest. One of them is the ongoing tension between the Navajo Tribal Police and the FBI. Neither law enforcement group trusts or respects the other. The Navajo police thinks that the FBI is a lying cheating no good organization. The FBI thinks they don’t have to take orders or listen to Indian police to solve a case, throughout this story between these two organizations there is nothing but lies and secrets whether it was finding clues, discovering missing bodies or finding incorrectly done ceremonies. The FBI won’t tell the Navajo police about crime and murders in their own town. All of these secrets are kept throughout the story until they realize that under circumstances

The acclaimed book known as Escape to Witch Mountain was published in 1968 by Alexander Key. Escape to Witch Mountain was a book about a peculiar pair of siblings named Tony and Tia Malone, and their quest for answers about their vague origins. It all began after they are placed in a new foster home called the Hackett House after the death of their beloved grandmother, Mrs. Malone. The other children then start to notice the supernatural abilities of Tony and Tia, when Tony beat up the notorious bully named Truck in such a grandiose fashion that had drawn a lot of attention to the two. The next week, the Hackett House had gone to Heron Lake for a week. The information made the children
Frederick Cossom or “Fred” Hollows was an eye doctor, who sought to be of assistance to others. He spent his life aiding those who weren’t capable of affording, or accessing, basic eye care. He was someone who strived to end avoidable blindness and improve the wellbeing of Aboriginal Australians who were suffering from some of the worse eye diseases that he had ever seen. Due his great desire to lend a hand to others, he did just that. He raised money to build lens factories in Eritrea and Nepal, to reduce the cost of cataract operations from hundreds of dollars to just $25. He was also entitled “Australian of the Year” in 1990 for the lengths he would go to simply just to help another.
The injustice to the Native American Indians would carry over to the 19th Century through the spread of the US colonies to western territories. With support from the Manifest Destiny, Americans were able to legally obtain land west of the Mississippi all while disregarding the wellbeing of the Native Indians. Following the California gold rush, several Indian massacres took place that resembled the same violence and abuse they had endured ever since the arrival of European whites to America.
Lieutenant Jimmy Cross was being replaced as his leg had gotten blown off by a Bouncing Betty this morning. The betty was positioned three feet away from his foxhole. When Cross had crawled out, there was a huge explosion that left him injured and lying on the ground. I could hear the blast all the way from the tree while I was taking a piss. I didn’t flinch even though it that sounded like a grenade went off. Anyway, after I heard the explosion, I saw smoke emerging from the area, so walked over to the sight where I saw Cross’s upper body coming out of the foxhole. The whole platoon was around his foxhole trying to help him. As I got closer, I could see how injured he was. There was a pool of blood underneath him trickling down his foxhole.
Throughout the semester, we have read many poems by many well-known authors. All of these poems were worthy of the literary merit they received, but I would like to write this paper on a poem that is equally as wonderful. I will be writing this paper on T.S. Eliot’s “The Hollow Men.” This is an incredibly poetic work that is just simply brilliant. I will be discussing how Eliot constantly uses death and creation images to strengthen the theme of the poem.
One of the biggest questions that humans have is “what is reality”. Plato suggests that, “ we are born in illusions,” (Plato) and that the truth is initially blinding. “The Myth of the Cave,” is a narrative story about the idea of reality, it is explored though an allegory about a man finding out the truth about reality coming from a life in the dark. They can only learn about true mainly through reason and truth. The story is told as a metaphor for what happens in the natural world and how people can be stuck in the dark about reality. Plato tells the story through the voice of Socrates, his mentor.
