The teaching context I have chosen for my work in this class is Spanish. Spanish would
be taught as a foreign language for second and third grade students in an Elementary School in
the United States. However, it is important to point out that there is diversity of cultural
backgrounds, (some students are from India, China, and Korea, etc…) but all of them speak
English. The proficiency level of the target language will be a beginner, though the students have
been already exposed to the target language since they have had Spanish instruction since kinder.
The students will get forty-five minutes of instruction once a week. There will be about sixteen
(16) students in each class. The students’ age would be between 7-9 years old. The language
instruction will be given during their regular school days.
The school will provide the Sonrisas Curriculum to teach Spanish, which comes with a
CD of Spanish songs in relation to the lessons. However, I will have the freedom to bring and
make my own materials depending on the lesson and the students’ reading and writing abilities.
Furthermore, instrumental and integrative motivation may vary among the students, because the
class will not allow students to leave the classroom if they do not like the target language. I will
keep in mind that at this young age students’ likes and dislikes about a certain class may vary
according to the lesson activity or the students’ mood.
In this paper, I will discuss my ideas and beliefs about teaching according to my teaching
context. These ideas and beliefs have been influenced by different factors such as my personal
experience as an English language learner, my past teaching experiences, my personality, values,

believe it is very important to take into consideration all of the principles mentioned above in
order to help students reach their potential when learning a new language.

There are a lot of students being placed whose primary language is not English. Students walk into a mainstream classroom not being able to speak English. Students in this situation are call English Language Learners(ELLs). These students are not receiving appropriate language support to succeed in their language development which is causing them to not have the ability to acquire language.
China would like to think of themselves as living in a microcosm. Foreigners are almost inferiors to China because each culture is so different that any influence foreigners would encourage to Chinese men would only be observed rather than accepted. Persistent Westerners hardly made any influence on China. Two different views upon Western impact on China were compared between J.A. Hobson’s Imperialism and Mike Davis’s Late Victorian Holocaust. Hobson’s coverage on China was a perspective written a century earlier than Davis’s coverage. The comparison of China on different timelines can explain the progress China has made, although between the two coverages, China was still adamant in preserving their culture and traditions.
McDonaldization is the process in which the principles of popular fast food companies such as McDonald’s are appearing throughout the world in many aspects of our modern society. As McDonaldization sweeps across the globe, The authors of McDonaldization Revisited argue that “‘Americanisation’ is so often a synonym for cultural decline” (Alfino, Caputo, & Wynyard , 1998, p. 8). George Ritzer claims that this is due to the rationalization of society as McDonaldization is meant to signify the optimal fusion of efficiency, calculability, predictability, and control (Ritzer, 2011). The intricacies of the human touch are utterly eliminated from this process, and what is left is an uninviting, cold, and unforgiving concept. When the novelty of something so foreign and American wears off, adaptation is needed to sustain one’s position in other countries. One research design type that researchers might utilize to view McDonaldization would be observation of the adaptation and cultural assimilation across different parts the world. This can be measured with ethnographies, the systematic study of the customs of people and cultures.

Often times we look at China and immediately think about the political constraints that the government has in place. This book puts a human element on the Chinese experience during this time. The human element that Hessler so eloquently writes about, explains why this economic shift was so passionately driven by the people. I have learned that there is a unique relationship between the ordinary citizens of China and the state. China was able to promote nationalism through its education system while providing people with opportunities that they were previously incapable of providing for themselves. You are taught at a very young age to work hard and never give up. You are taught to understand and recognize your imperfection in comparison to the state. It is almost as if the people of China are constantly seeking the approval of the state and not the other way around, like in a democracy. This reflects what we have learned in our readings. While over ten percent of the total adolescent education systems contain emergent bilinguals, a whopping sixty percent of those students are educated in only English (Bale).
