The question of “what is my purpose in writing,” could be for the most part a very broad question to understand, but when it comes to actually answering the question; I think of how my writing skills have developed throughout the years. When I think of writing overall, I normally think of the people who have creatively designed novels, poems, plays, screenwriting, and maybe even comics and movies. The purpose of my writing is to be successfully able to write at a much clearer and understanding pace, especially when it comes to writing essays and papers for classes. I believe that is very important to learn different styles of writing, ranging from the reliable writing modes and what your self’s purpose is for writing anything, and much more …show more content…
One strength that I hold is the belief of understanding others viewpoints for example; I tend to develop the process of thought when I think of different explanations. I as well give myself more time to write down and expand on my ideas, as well as trying to elaborate my explanations on any subject. A weakness of mine that comes to mind would have to be the repetition of using words and phrases constantly; I tend to say “for example”, “in conclusion” and other types of phrases. Surprisingly for the most part, my audience to whom I usually tend to write to would have to be seniors in high school or professors in school. I know what you are thinking, why am I writing to students in high school? Well before taking this class, I used to lead retreats at my old high school, and it was required to give a talk/presentation to the students during the retreat. Therefore, I guess you could say for the most part, my audience would have to be teenagers in highs school. Throughout history there have been many cases of women who possess strong powers and a passion for God, especially in the Middle Ages. One woman that fit into that category was Margery Kempe, a fifteenth-century visionary, who was a controversial figure in the Christian faith. Margery insisted that Jesus talked to her, while many people thought that she was being possessed by the devil. During the time of The Middle Ages many stories of women saints were being exposed with many differences from Kempe’s life, however there were some surprising similarities as well. Medieval female saints and martyrs were intended to be chaste if they were single and virtuous if they are married. They were also extremely devoted and pure to Christ, not giving in to any temptations. Kempe seems to be tempted by men, but then immediately followed by shame. On the other hand she posse’s qualities the saints share like, visions, passion, a desire to be chaste and, commitment. The weakness I portray are very difficult for me to think of. I know that I have quite a few but to change them is something that I have not full conquered yet. A weakness I know I have is sentence structure. I am not very good at putting sentences together and making them strong and well developed. Another weakness that is obvious is word choice. I don't always know the exact wording to use in different parts of a paper, this makes it hard to understand sometimes not very well written.
As the colloquial phrase goes…behind every great man, lies a great woman, but in John Keats’ case, the woman is neither great nor his superior but inspires greatness in the Romantic poet. This woman calls herself Fanny Brawne. She was intellectually inferior to Keats, but her sprightly character added rich, sensuosity to his writing. John Keats always had a fondness for folklore and medieval tales. He dreamt of being a chivalric knight, riding on a white steed to rescue his damsel. In early childhood Keats would go to a rustic arbor, find his niche, and read Edmund Spenser’s “Faery Queen”: it “awakened his genius,” and “he was enchanted, breathed in a new world, and became another being” (Bate 75). Fanny Brawne is Keats’ “Faery Queen,” and her spirit inspires the sensuous, rife, and feminine qualities of “The Eve of St. Agnes.”
Another one of my strengths as a writer and a student is my determination to complete every assignment to the best of my ability. I have never been the type of student that does not get her work done, whether it be an essay for English or a workbook page for Geometry. I work diligently in all my classes and aim to learn as much as I can from every assignment. Since English is not my best subject, I work twice as hard to improve every day and bring out the best writer in me. My determination is what drove me to enhance my weaknesses and polish my strengths.
The symbolic imagery in this passage contributes to helping the reader understand Louise’s character while encompassing two major thematic concerns. The imagery begins with a “mule deer” darting its way into a large arena filled with dancers. The description of the deer being a mule makes the animal appear strong because mule deer are often larger in size and more heavily built than other species of deer. There are many instances from the beginning to the end of the novel that involve deer. Their significant involvement in the story, and the fact that Louise is absent from this scene, can leave one to believe that they are a symbolic representation of her character. .... Kempe revered Jesus Christ as her lover, abstaining from human sexual acts due to her love and adoration of God. In her autobiography, she further exemplifies her disturbing vision of the savior as her lover. She is written to say, "Ah, Blessed Lord, I wish I knew in what I might best love and please you; and that my love were as sweet to you as I think your love is to me" (Kempe, 141). This seems very typical of a courtly romance of the time, not a prayer to God. Though bizarre, Margery Kempe still reveals that devotion is the secret to finding Truth as she lived a very holy life.
She verbally distances her reasoned and enlightened self from her past lost and unreasoned self. During this state of madness, Kempe is sure to portray her former self as the victim; afterwards she presents herself as a humble and enlightened victor. In a way Kempe constructs her madness as the first of her many tests needed to ascend to the sainthood she so longs for, not at all different from Christ’s temptation by Satan in the wilderness. When madness is presented this way, there seems to be no cure but Jesus and Kempe is sure to cover this, weaving her fragile mental state of years ago into a spiritual lesson or sermon to be reflected
One of the skills that I can do best is listening, which I count as my strength because I know what I am doing and I am very conscious that I can ignore any hindrance. On the other hand, lack of self-confidence is my weakness. I find it difficult to do presentation in class or introduce myself to make new friends.
I have many strengths and weaknesses. My strongest academic skills are most likely my organizational skills. I am a very organized person. I have numerous amounts of organizational products such as planners, binders, and dividers. I have greatly benefited by these products, especially when I attended public school, they really helped me stay on task with what work needed to be turned into to each class. Planners are the product I have utilized the most. When I attended public school we had an A/B schedule. Planners played a key part in helping me remember when test and other things would be coming up in my classes. Another strength of mine would be my career decidedness. As a student of Writing 101, I find my goals to all be very similar in that I look to be bettering my skills. Throughout high school, my teachers prepared me the best they could for college writing, but I believe I still have a lot to work on. I would like to develop a better sense of writing with purpose, writing pieces with awareness to how it could be affecting the reader. Being able to analyze reading with ease as well as connecting pieces of writing to real world event is a skill I find to be helpful.
When teaching writing, I will set my end goals for instruction under two categories: academic goals and personal goals. First of all, I believe that there should be visible growth in the academic area students are being instructed in. Notice that I said I want to see visible growth; I did not assign a letter grade that I thought would be appropriate for students to meet. Not every student is going to come into the classroom at the same level, so my end goal of writing instruction would be to see some sort of positive growth in my students. This does not necessarily mean I expect all of my students to be getting A’s on their writing assignments. I would also not be afraid to voice this to my students. Writing is an art, you put your black and white words on a paper and readers collects colorful images on their mind. Everyone has their own definitions or purposes when it comes to writing. Some do it because they want to and others do it because they must. I write for both purposes. Writing is my tool to communicate and it gives me a platform to express my emotions.
In addition, by working through some of these weaknesses, they will make me a stronger writer (Bethel University,2014). Other areas I would like to capitalize some of my strengths on are determination and responsibility. Managing my family, my career, and my education can be challenging at times, however this type of dedication will put me in front of my peers professionally and personally (Bethel University,2014).
