I believe that as a writer I’ve always been a free writer, in the sense that I love writing without thinking about the ramifications of grammar and spelling. Although free writing is fun, I believe it is my strength because I can most likely write about a subject for multiple pages without any research by just using my own thoughts and opinions. Consequently, this type of writing has also been my downfall in essays and other writing assignments because of the mandatory rules that I fail to remember. In writing assignments, since I normally write off of what comes to mind my writing seems to carry many vague generalizations due to the lack of research that I do on the subject. When writing a five paragraph essay, there are five steps one must fallow in order to attain perfection, these steps include understanding the question, brainstorming, writing a rough copy, revising, and creating a final draft. The first and most important step is understanding the topic. The topic of the essay is what the essay will be about and if this is misunderstood, the whole essay will be off course. The second step, brainstorming, will help organize thoughts and ideas so they flow amiably. There are many different ways to brainstorm, some of the most helpful are making a web of ideas, making a list of ideas, or creating a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the conviction. All these ideas will be related to the topic at hand. For example, if the essays topic is about how the earth is affected by global warming, then the brainstorming ideas might include the ozone lair being reduced or how global climate has raised. In my past writing assignments it seemed to be that we were learning everything step by step, where as in college more is expected from me as a writer. As a high school student it was quite easy to push everything off till the last moment. Those two o'clock nights were very frequent when a six-page research paper was due the next day. As a college student the requirements are more challenging and not something that can be pushed back till the very last second. It seems strange to me that starting earlier for a college paper and working twice as hard on it, receiving a lower grade on it than I would have in high school is upsetting to think about, but is so true. When coming into the semester I was unaware of what was expected from me, but as the semester progressed I was able to get a better understanding of the course and how to look critically at myself as a writer. I know that these are qualities that I will use for many years to come.
The art of writing is a complex and difficult process. Proper writing requires careful planning, revision, and proofreading. Throughout the past semester, the quality of my writing has evolved significantly. At first, I struggled with the separation of different types of paragraphs, and I found writing them laborious. Constant practice, however, has eliminated many of my original difficulties, and helped to inspire confidence in my skills. As a collegiate writer, my strength lies in my clear understanding of the fundamentals of writing, while my primary weakness is proofreading my own work.
My Growth as a Writer Most of us write in some form every day, so you would expect that most of us would be well practiced and pretty good at writing. I read and write all the time; I have taken several college courses and nearly all of them require writing in some form. However, before taking this class, not only was I not a good writer, I knew I wasn’t a good writer. Now I am not saying that I am ready to write my first novel, but I am certainly more confident in turning in my college papers. The content of this course and the style of teaching was incredibly beneficial to me.
Writing is a process I’ve grown to despise. Ever since grade school, I’ve had problems trying to express my ideas on paper. My writing process involves thinking about what’s being asked and trying to reflect my thoughts the best way I can on paper, but my thoughts don’t always come out as clear as I want them to be sometimes leaving a question not fully answered. My writing process isn’t a consistent set in stone process, but since being in ENC 1101 I always follow some of the same parameters such as revising my drafts, grammar usage and considering context and audience.
As the first semester of my sophomore year wraps up, I begin to realize that I have learned a lot in all of my classes. The class that I learned the most from has definitely been my English 111 course. This class have given me so many opportunities to improve my writing skills. With all of the success I’ve had in this class, I believe I will do just fine with writing later in my life.
I have never liked writing; I always thought it was a waste of time. It was a great therapy but I never found academic writing to be useful just tedious. Only ever writing when I had too made it harder for my writing skills to grow or improve in any way. I have not taken an English class since the 10th grade, even then I never gave it much effort, just doing what I had to so I could pass the class. Then I jump in to College English 1010, I feel like I do well in all other subjects but this one. English is my worst nightmare.
I did not have a firm writing philosophy before this semester, but I to some degree I understood the importance writing can have on a situation. Now I understand that writing has two outcomes: gaining support or losing support. When writing an essay it is best if the writing is as specific as possible. This way the audience is hopefully not left with a confused opinion about the topic. Since the beginning of the semester I have put a conscious effort to change my writing style. Instead of the box format that is learned in high school I try to use a more graceful approach while still being organized. Also, I evaluate the credibility of a source before I use the information to support my thesis and understand the roles of using ethos, pathos, and logos. My assignments are now written with more developed thought by elaborating on ideas in the body paragraphs. By participating in the assignments throughout the semester I have accomplished, to different extents, the objectives for the English Composition 101 course. My writing has improved in multiple areas such as knowing who my audience is, and how writing drafts and making revisions help me evaluate the effectiveness of my essay. I am also aware that academic writing differs from day-to-day writing because for academic writing I need to present the most credible evidence in an organized format. Furthermore, I now can effectively evaluate my writing to know where I can improve.
In this paper, I am to write about my strengths and weaknesses in writing. This is not an easy task for me because I have never considered myself a writer. Reading other peoples thoughts are activities that are more my speed. I simply have trouble putting my thoughts into writing. Since, I do not feel that I have many strengths, let's move on to my weaknesses.
Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe that I developed my own personal style a bit from this. At the beginning of the semester my writing was quite choppy and there was plenty of room for improvement in the overall flow of my essays. Now, I use several different tactics such as outlining to create better connections between paragraphs. I believe I was able to move beyond many of the high school ways of writing and make general improvements to my essays.
I, for one, it was quite a stressful experience before this course. Starting the paper was one of the main challenging elements of the writing process which I was faced with most of the time. For many unproductive hours, I would simply stare blankly at my writing computer screen while blank thoughts ran through my mind. Nevertheless, among many techniques that I erudite, free-writing is one of the most important step of writing, and had proven to be effective on my writing process. With my problem of not being able to generate ideas to put down on the paper, free-writing has helped me a tremendously. Proper free-writing helps a writer in ways beyond his or her imagination. For instance, when you free-write, your brain generates ideas that even a writer himself or herself might find hard to engender or grasp. Since the writer is not restricted when free-writing, your imagination is your limitation; you reserve the right to literally write about any number of themes which comes to mind. From these themes which you generate, you can then select what you feel fits best your argument. This is the advantage that I have come to realize in free-writing. Through this course, I have come to learn that everything requires just enough preparation in order for someone to tackle a particular task. Free-writing my papers at first, has made me more aware of my progress throughout the entire time of writing and certain aspects of my paper that I can improve on. Additionally, Free-writing has helped me realize that your paper can always improve; there are always new ideas firing in your mind. With free-writing you are able to capture these ideas on paper as they come to mind time after time. For future writings I will continue to work on my time allocation. In order to be an effective educator, a combination of caring, communicative, creative, critical, contextual and professional dispositions are needed. Being empathic, attentive, flexible, reflective, active and confidential, just to name a few, allows one to be efficient and competent when working with students. These dispositions can shape the classroom for the better because when students feel welcome and valued, they want to learn and will learn more.
I keep an archive of school work from past semesters of college and even high school. So I opened it up and looked through a few essays I had senior year at my high school. It quickly became apparent to me that although my writing style was consistent and slowly got better over those years, I still made some of the same mistakes in paper after paper. I tended to just throw out the idea I had in my head at the time onto the page. Yes I did manage to transcribe my meaning from my head to the text, but more often then not you couldn 't tell because It was buried under mountains of unnecessary text and formatted
For teachers, this allows them to evaluate the student’s work. The nice part of the Glossing process is that grammar instruction is individualized. The teacher can assist students individually while others fill out their “Glossing Sheets.” This process also allows the teacher, depending on the grade, to steer the process based on what they are teaching their students. For instance, Johansen and Shaw explain how a freshman teacher may highlight fragments and run-ons in their students’ papers while a senior teacher might highlight parallelism (98). However, to keep students from feeling overwhelmed by the amount of grammar rules, a list of twenty most difficult grammar rules for students in 9th to 12th grade was created, English Conventions Rule Sheet. Based upon this list, the teachers would go through the student’s compositions and highlight the rules that were violated. I believe my strengths and weakness are intertwined, in the sense that without my weaknesses there would be no opportunity for me to be made strong. In saying this I would be ignorant if I overlooked my flaws completely, which is why I believe in doing regular self-evaluations to discover those areas that I should grow in to become a well-rounded woman. A few of my flaws consist of: the desire to over communicate, caring too much about others, and over thinking situations or problems. With every weakness, if pride doesn’t overshadow reasoning, there is a path that we all must journey on to accomplish satisfaction of who we are at that point in our lives ,whether we have accepted the transition along the way or allowed stubbornness to hinder our growth. We all have the same options to make our weaknesses into our assets. It all boils down to the person’s personal preference; I choose to evolve in my weaknesses.
