The main reason I have chosen to apply for an ALT position with JET is that attaining this position would facilitate the accomplishment of three of my short-term goals, to learn Japanese, reach a deeper understanding of Japanese culture and find employment in Japan. There are many reasons I have these goals but the most important one is that my fiancée is Japanese. It’s important for me to be familiar with her culture, because this is an essential aspect of who she is. Japanese fluency will be critical in the future for communicating with her family and raising our children in a bilingual home. Finally, should we decide to live in Japan permanently, experience with a distinguished, reputable organization like JET will prepare me for further employment opportunities within Japan.
The ALT position with JET is an excellent opportunity for me in particular, because I’m a skilled ESL teacher with a wealth of experience. I’ve lived abroad in Chile, The Czech Republic, China, and Japan. I have seven years experience teaching ESL abroad, beginning in the Czech Republic, where I earned my TE...
After living in Japan for seventeen years, David Aldwinkle decided to become a Japanese citizen (Weiner & Aldwinkle, 2003). He has immersed himself in the culture, changing his name to Arudou Debito. He has written a book in Japanese about racial discrimination in Japan entitled Japanese Only, teaches at a local university and he even has relinquished his American citizenship. Throughout that time, he has experienced examples of both ethnocentrism and cultural relativism.
I want to join Year Up because of the opportunity it provides to receive an education and experience in a professional computer-programming environment that I might not have received otherwise. A Dynamic Individual with Vitality and Attitude…these are the characteristics of a true DIVA. I never knew the real meaning of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated until I attended college. While I was a student in middle and high school, the lovely women of Delta Sigma Theta seemed intangible to me. I admired them and wanted to one day follow in their footsteps. The way they spoke, how they carried themselves, the respect they demanded and the attention they received just by walking into a room was mind boggling to me. And from those short encounters I knew I wanted to be apart of this prestigious sorority, but now I know why I need to be apart of this extraordinary organization.
The case of sick leave involved Kelly, who was hired by Soto Board of Education in Japan. Her employment was with The Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (JET) and Conference of Local Authorities for International Relations (CLAIR) had taken over the contracts for the workers of JET. CLAIR’s role was to be a liaison during recruiting and selection, counseling and participant welfare. Their main function was to promote the exchange at the local level. The paper stated that if there was a problem with the host institution, then it was up to the host to address and solve the issue. If the problem didn’t get resolved then the participant could go to CLAIR with their grievances. It was up to them to step in on JET participants’ behalf to work to solve the issue.
The ‘Sick Leave’ case study is a good example of how the priorities and interests of the two cultures depicted in the story differentiate. The case study involving Kelly and her supervisor Mr. Higashi shows how different view can collide. Kelly entered the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program. This programs

It was a steep learning curve over the next thirteen years as I gained experience and eventually taught in Taiwan’s most prestigious elementary schools. My teaching experience, combined with my understanding of the culture led to my first management position in an educational role as I became the Head Teacher of a public elementary school in Taiwan. I felt a real sense of commitment to the community in this role and I set ambitious goals when I started this position. My ability to work within the framework of the Taiwanese culture helped me accomplish these goals.
“...many must travel to give speeches and meet with individuals who are important to their organization” (). A public relations and fundraising manager includes traveling to various places. This can mean associating with a more spanish speaking collaborator. And since I am fluent in Spanish, I can work with them more efficiently than a non speaking spanish manager. A bilingual employee can reduce the problem of trying to hire a translator and be available at all times. If you hire me, it can reduce the time of trying to hire a translator and be present at necessary times. I can be able to associate with Spanish speakers without worrying of having a translator. Ie (家), Gakkō (学校), and Shigoto (仕事) means family, school, and work, all which are important to Japanese society and culture. I have learned what it truly means to march and walk as a cadet and how we are held at a higher standard to the public and my fellow cadet peers. My instructor Chief Jackson has really taught me a lot and has me wanting to come back for 10th- grade JROTC. We were taught how to march, take orders from the commanding chief and how to be more disciplined. I also learned about leadership, community service, and teamwork. This is a great program because it helps motivate young people like myself to be better citizens. Also, since I don’t have a father in my life at all, never have had a father around this program gives me an outlet and it keeps me staying on the right path and track. I also know that I can accomplish anything I want with or without a dad.
