I am currently in the nursing program at Motlow to get my associates degree and to begin my career in the medical field. After graduation I will attend MTSU to receive my bachelors as an RN and work in a Primary Care Clinic. From there I will attend Vanderbilt for my masters as a Licensed Nurse Practitioner, LPN, then hoping to move from general medicine into a specialty clinic that focuses on specific diseases and disorders. Therefore, I chose the following 3 topics because of my professional pathway and I have very close relatives and friends who are affected by these disabilities.

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a chronic state that causes muscles to tire and weaken easily. The meaning of the term Myasthenia Gravis is broken up, My means Muscle, asthenia means lack of strength and Gravis means serious. In an autoimmune disorder the immune system attacks parts of the body. The part of the body that is attacked by the circulation of antibodies, is the muscular system, and in certain receptors for acetylcholine on muscle cells at the neuromuscular junctions.
The diagnosis for MG is often very difficult. Since there are many disorders that cause weakness, a number of tests may be used to determine a diagnosis of MG. In addition to a complete medical and neurological evaluation, a blood test for the abnormal antibodies can be completed to see if they are present. Three studies are used for the diagnosis of MG, anit-AchR antibody titers, the Tensilon test, and electromyography, including both the Jolly test and single fiber EMG. Used together, these three studies are almost 100% sensitive for Myasthenia Gravis.
According to Medical-Surgical Nursing: 7th edition, Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disease that can be considered as a chronic neuromuscular disorder (Lewis et al., 2007, p. 1555). MG is caused by an autoimmune process in which “antibodies attack acetylcholine (ACh) receptors, resulting in a decreased number of ACh receptor (AChR) sites at the neuromuscular junction” (p. 1555). Due to the neurotransmitter’s inability to connect the muscles and the nerves, it is difficult for the muscle to contract. This disease basically causes muscle fatigue and therefore a detrition of muscle strength over time. (John Hopkins Medicine, n.d.) In many respects, it is like a satellite unable to detect a signal when it is blocked by interfering radio waves.
Myasthenia gravis is a chronic auto-immune neuromuscular disease, which causes weakness in the skeletal muscles. These muscles are responsible for breathing and moving certain parts of the body. The number one sign of myasthenia gravis is muscle weakness that worsens after periods of activity and improves after periods of rest. The eyes are usually affected first with this disease. MG tends to attack muscle groups used for voluntary movement, meaning they are muscles that you have control of. Certain muscles such as those that control facial expression, chewing, talking, and swallowing are often involved with this disease. Because weakness is a common symptom of many other disorders, the diagnosis of myasthenia gravis is often missed or delayed
My mom has bipolar disorder and depression. Most of my life I had to deal with her denial of not being mentally ill. There were hard times but now that she accepted her mental illness, her behavior is leveled out. However, my dad has diabetes and high blood sugar. Even though diabetes and high blood sugar are categorized under a disability, I worry these illnesses will cause my dad to obtain a disability. When I compare my parents, I know that my mom does not have modifiable factors contributing to her disability. However, my dad does. He can make small changes to his diet and activity level. If he made the small changes is overall health would improve and lessen his chance of acquiring a disability. Recently, my dad has started to eat healthier and increased his activity level. When it comes to disabilities and how they would affect, they make me want to be proactive and advocate that particular person. I want them to overcome the hardship of the disability while having the resources and the support system they need. That what makes me excited to be an Occupational Therapist working with individuals with
