My Philosophy of Education
Education is a major component of our society. Each culture has its own traditions on education, and there are many different philosophies on education. There are so many people that are involved in the educational system, and I feel that it is important to express my own philosophy on education.
Of course, one purpose of education is to help to develop children emotionally. In the educational setting students learn manners, how to respect their peers and their elders. In fact, I feel that this is one of the more important purposes of the schools. Children learn how to interact with other students, and teachers. Especially in the early years, students are taught to be honest, and to share. While these are lessons that might also be taught at home, it is important to reinforce proper behavior at schools.
Similarly, the educational system also teaches basic skills that will be necessary in life. These lessons aren’t always taught in classes or planned in lessons, however, certain things, like time management is taught through school. Students are required to balance their life, with homework, sports practices, clubs, friends and family. This is an important skill that the educational system helps to develop.

The first, most noticeable theme, is alcohol. In “The Swimmer”, alcohol represents Neddy’s longing for a high-spirited life and an admirable social status. The drinking, serving, and craving for alcohol became a major influence for Neddy, as well as a way to maintain his social status. The story starts off talking about alcohol. They are all sitting around the Westerhazy’s pool complaining “I drank too much last night”, but as expected they are at the pool the next morning drinking again. Before Neddy decides to leave to swim from pool to pool, he drinks gin and continues to drink on his whole journey home. Almost every pool that Neddy stops at, he asks the pool owner for a drink. The story “The Swimmer” by Cheever takes place during midsummer Sunday where everyone sitting around and saying “I drank too much.” Most of the story takes place at when Neddy goes on a journey by traveling through many pools. Neddy belongs to white upper-middle class social standing. The story does changes over times when Neddy travels through different pools with new experiences. At the beginning of the story, everyone is talking about their hangovers. Throughout the story, alcohol is defined as a drug or poison. The protagonist is dealing is obsessed with alcohol, to which he could not stop drinking and it had become his habit as he continues his journey. In the story, alcohol is defined as the poison.
I think the message that John Cheever is trying to make in this short story is that if a person is in total concentration of a single goal, then it may result in ignoring or losing treasures that enrich our everyday lives. Some of these lost treasures are friendships, respect, family, and possessions. “The Swimmer” is written in third person omniscient, but focuses more on the main character Neddy. “Was he losing his memory, had his gift for concealing painful facts let him forget that he had sold his house, that his children were in trouble, and that his friend had been ill? His eyes slipped from Eric’s face to his abdomen, where he saw three pale, sutured scars, two of them at least a foot long.” With Neddy as the main character, the reader has the ability to form his or her own opinion of Neddy, due to the fact that we as readers do not know his actual thought process. Cheever mostly likely wrote “The Swimmer” in third person omniscient to allow the reader to create their own ideas as to what is going on in the character’s mind. Cheever already put ideas in our heads to describe Neddy as being selfish, cold-hearted, self-centered, and rich. I

John’s writing can be categorized as factually movement known as realism. The story is frequently reflected as a symbol about decline, the aging progression, mid-life crisis and the life cycle as a whole.

In “Swimmers” by John Cheever, the negative changes in the narrator’s surroundings as he journeyed along the river allowed him to leave his façade and reconnect with reality. For example, when Neddy leaves the gazebo at the Levy’s house and analyzes his surroundings, he says, “The force of the wind had stripped a maple of its red and yellow leaves and scattered them over the grass and the water” (Cheever 730). The description of falling leaves compared to the description of a bright, summer day presented at the beginning of the story shows that a significant amount of time has passed since then. This reveals to the reader that Neddy is not truly aware of his surroundings because from his perspective, it seems as if only a few hours have passed
My Philosophy Statement Education is a very important aspect of our lives. It is our education that makes us who we are and determines what we become. Therefore, education is not something to be taken lightly. As a teacher, my goal is to provide the best possible education for my students. Every student is unique and unique.
If one really looks at it, everyone would consider education has having different purposes. This denotes that the question of educational purpose is actually seen quite difficult to self. This is because the purpose or purposes of education is entirely dependent on personal beliefs and values (Biesta 40) therefore, there is a dichotomous depiction of views about education where different schools of thought come and intersect. In simple terms, this means that every person has a different aim or a different goal in life. They want to learn different things to satisfy what they consider the most important. A person who is passionate about music would like to learn the different instruments. Similarly, a person who is involved in science would want to seek tfor scientific knowledge. But, the social institution of education is not without its problems. Continual efforts to modify and improve the system need to be made, if we are to reap the highest benefits that education has to offer to our children and our society as a whole.
The purpose of education is to teach the basics of knowledge and to challenge each individual to learn. The realization that I will have the power to make a difference in a child’s life is sometimes overwhelming. This remarkable fact gives me a stronger purpose – to be a positive role model for my students. Being an effective teacher is truly an awesome responsibility.
