Homework is an integral part of education. Yet, there are many students who feel overwhelmed by the amount of homework required of them. I am writing this letter to explain my philosophy of homework and stress its part in the education process. In addition, I will explain what the policy of homework is for your student's U.S. History class and why it is important that all homework assignments are completed, and submitted on time.
As you know, we live in a very competitive period in the history of the world. Business leaders expect students to know more than ever before. Whatever form it takes, student practice at home is important to the success of high school students. Studies have shown that homework is most beneficial when it involves the practice of a previously learned skill.
In addition, I expect all students will successfully complete each homework assignment and submit it on time. Late work receives half of the credit earned. Students are encouraged to develop the habit of studying every night. Work habits developed in high school carry through to the next levels of schooling. A successful college student recognizes that he/she must set time aside every night to complete assignments. One of the goals of homework is to develop good habits that can make the transition to the next level of schooling an easy adjustment.
In closing, I want to reiterate that homework is an important piece in your student's education. It allows for additional practice of skills introduced and taught during school hours. Ample research has been done on the correlation between homework and academic success with many opposing views. Research has shown that homework can be linked to better grades, improved standardized test scores, and more prepared students entering the post-secondary arena; however, this correlation is weak and the opposition has equal ammunition to support that there is no correlation between homework and academic success. There have been movements to abolish homework as well as movements to increase homework. Research has been done to show how homework has a negative effect on students as well as how it has a positive effect. Homework may be beneficial to academic success, but must have meaning to the student, must be measurable by the teacher, and must be manageable by both.
Although homework may seem like drudgery, the hard work that is put into homework may pay off in the long run. In the article, “Does homework really work for students?” Jacqueline Carey, the mother of seventh grade student Micah Carey, stated that “homework gives [students] a good foundation for when they move on further in school” (Johnson). Not only that but according to Donyall Dickey, principle at Murray Hill Middle School, “if students do not acquire things in class, they will acquire them through homework” (Johnson). As we can see homework helps and prepares us for higher grade levels while in primary school that can possibly prepare us for college. It also helps us to remember the materials that were taught in class. Another reason homework can be beneficial is the fact that it can prepare us for tests and the dreadful pop-quiz that a teacher may randomly give us. “My dog ate my homework,” is a famous, desperate excuse theoretically used by students who have failed, out of a lack of self-discipline, to complete homework assignments. Although several people believe that doing homework consistently leads to success in life, it is often placed by high school students in the same category as chores; mundane and difficult. While it is true that completing homework can contribute to success in a class, it also can limit the amount of time that high school students are able to work on other educational pursuits. Decreasing the general amount of homework that students are assigned on a daily basis may enable them to pursue other important endeavors such as mastering musical talent, improving athletically, and spending meaningful time with friends and family.
Homework; now that’s a problem. As an individual, involved with the educational system, I stand for no homework. Children and teens across the country and around the world are struggling with sleep deprivation coming from too much assigned homework. While homework may seem like a tedious task, it can help a student comprehend the material. Homework is necessary for more than just a grade; it is an assignment that teaches you valuable life skills. Students tend to portray homework as something that they have to get done without knowing the value that lies behind it. We all know the downfall of homework: the frustration and exhaustion, family conflict, time loss, and decreasing interest in learning. No study has ever demonstrated any academic achievement linked to assigning homework. There is also no support to the fact that homework provides nonacademic benefits at any age. Homework is one of the struggle that students have. In now days, students are having very hard time at doing homework. They use a lots of time to finish it. Students don’t have relaxing time because of homework time. Many teachers are giving home works to students, so they usually spend time to finish homework, essay, and projects.
Kralovec, author of The End of Homework argues that doing homework during high school has little or no effect on successful study skills of students in college. College students have only a few hours of class a week and lots of daytime hours in which to study. She says the college schedule is nowhere as grueling as in high school. In addition, the average adult does not return home from the office with three or more hours of work to complete (Kralovec). When "busy work" assignments are given carelessly and frequently, it causes students to lose interest in the subject. Negative results can also occur when a student is not able to complete his or her homework. Many times they will resort to copying homework, having others do their assignments, or cheating on tests. Bad habits such as these are likely to follow kids through their lives and have an effect on their moral judgment.
