My Personal Philosophy of Education
Without education, society as we know it would cease to exist. Formal education is what has made our country and other industrialized nations great. Thus, as a future educator, I anticipate the opportunity to assist in the molding of future generations by imparting essential knowledge.
The famous philosopher and educator, John Dewey, once said, "Education is the process of living through a continuous reconstruction of experience. It is the development of all those capacities in the individual which will enable him to control his environment and fulfill his possibilities." Identifying with Dewey's pragmatist philosophy, I believe that children are ultimately shaped by their environmental experiences and must be taught how to use their knowledge as responsible, productive citizens. The educational process must begin with and emphasize the interests of the students, while focusing on their growth in all aspects of their beings.
As a facilitating instructor, I plan to construct an eclectic blending of a student-centered, yet authoritative, classroom. In this respect, I will take both a demanding and responsive approach to teaching, while still allowing my students to remain actively involved in the learning process. My aim is to increase the motivation of children by providing them with reasonable choices regarding structure and materials. Focusing on problem solving activities, rather than mere rote learning and dogmatic instruction, I shall strive to develop students' abilities to think analytically and creatively. At the same time, however, I hope to improve their social skills by engaging them in real-world activities.

Although the most important part of being an educator rests on focusing upon the needs of students when making classroom decisions, moreover, I consider the blend of philosophies which I advocate to be essential aspects of a school's curriculum. I believe that they will not only assist me in shaping the lives of my students when I begin teaching but will also aid me throughout the completion of my academic career. As I work toward a master's degree in the field of special education, after my graduation from Concord College, my educational philosophy will continue to grow. My personal philosophy on special education begins with this firm conviction, I believe all children are “uniquely and wonderfully” made, and regardless of their disability, posse unique gifts and talents. My philosophy of special education has developed, not from just being a general education teacher for many years, and a graduate student in special education, but also from being blessed to be a parent of a special needs child. The students in our classrooms, both special education and general education classrooms, require individualized education to reach their full potential. Each child’s potential is different just as each child’s road to reach it is different. Our job as teachers is to be there for the student’s to help them reach their potential through their own unique way.
My philosophy on education is that all students should receive the most uplifting educational experience. I want to change a student’s spirit towards all aspects of their school and curriculum. Creating a sense of pride in themselves and where they attend school is a crucial element in their interest in education. A student should be allowed to form their own opinions, instead of conforming to the ideas of their teacher. This will be accomplished by allowing the students to take charge of their learning so that it will hold some significance to them. I feel it is my responsibility to help shape the students’ character, as well as their minds. An educator should model the behaviors that are expected from their students. An educator should practice ideal qualities such as acceptance, empathy, and broadmindedness. A teacher is not the only model that students will be exposed to in their life. This is why it is crucial to involve parents and other members of the community to share in your vision. Students learn a variety of social skills as they embark on their education at any school district. They learn to listen, take turns, hear different points of view, negotiate, communicate, and take responsibility for their own behavior. I believe that when students have those skills and attitudes; learning will be meaningful in their lives. The vision of an educator will not hold any meaning unless it is implemented, maintained and promoted to the school and community. The goal of the school is to provide the students with a wide variety of educational experiences that will encourage self-respect, the acceptance of others, customary behavior, life-long learning, and active participation in society.
In my teaching, I use the principles of active and cooperative learning. As a teacher I encourage students to understand concepts and apply them to problems, rather than simply memorize information. A famous author once said, “When you don’t know where you are going, any road will take you there.” There is truth in that statement when we look at the nature of humans today. Today’s society is filled with people who are wondering around with no purpose or direction in life. People today are content with this helpless lifestyle and so generation after generation will continue until the society has no leaders. I attribute this directly to the education of these individuals. As a future teacher, I must look at what the nature of students has become, the nature of knowledge, and ask myself why we have public education. In order for me to be an effective educator, I must reevaluate my philosophy of education and what it means to me.
As I ponder over my personal professional development experiences as an educator the realization of how one has developed over time is personally satisfying. Educating children especially children with special needs is a challenge within its self. As a teacher it is important that this writer makes a positive influence with students. There are going to be certain ideas that one tries to uphold and other discriminations that one will not allow. Everyone has their own beliefs teachers should do what is necessary not to infringe on others, but show children different way to think so that they have all the information needed to make educated choices. I would not be considered your typical college student in search of an education degree. I am a 31 year old male, married, with two children, and working on my second career. My previous life consisted of working in the coal mines till I was injured. My injury, however, is considered a blessing in disguise. My injury has leaded me to the world of education.
I believe every child is unique and deserves a safe, compassionate, and stimulating environment in which to grow and mature in all areas. I strongly believe that all children are capable of learning given the proper motivation, differentiation, and direction from their teachers. Education is a vital part of society. It serves the beneficial purpose of educating our children and getting them ready to be productive adults in today's society. But, the social institution of education is not without its problems. Continual efforts to modify and improve the system need to be made, if we are to reap the highest benefits that education has to offer to our children and our society as a whole.
I will give my students depth and plentiful of academic understanding and knowledge. Although easily influenced by the opinions of others, education is one of the few concepts that neither internal nor external stress can strip from our being. The future of our society lies in the hands of our educators; the values and morals instilled by such figures govern the actions of the earth’s people.
When we really think about it, everything produced by man – no matter how processed – began as natural resources from the earth. Therefore, it is important to remember these origins and learn about our planet. Similarly, as David Orr states, “all education is environmental education.” But, this education, like every man-made product, can be “processed” so much that it becomes detached from its environmental roots. Orr continues, explaining that “by what is included or excluded, emphasized or ignored, students learn that they are a part of or apart from the natural world. In today’s world the school plays an increasingly important role in the lives of students. To some it is a place to learn; others--a place to socialize or perhaps where one can get away from the stresses of home for a period of time. To this writer, school is a bridge that spans from early childhood to adult life. It provides the means by which students are afforded the opportunity to acquire knowledge, form relationships and mature. As a future educator, it is my goal to provide a friendly, comfortable atmosphere in which these ideals can materialize. Students should not feel that school is a prison in which they must sit all day long, being bored and uninterested. As a teacher, I will strive to present a curriculum that invites students to participate and holds their interest in what is going on in the classroom. I believe that education is a mix between the two philosophical views, progressivism and essentialism, and the more psychological view, behaviorism. I feel that while the basic subjects need to be stressed in education, students also need to explore other areas of interest, in other words, be self-guided in areas they find stimulating. A teacher’s role is to encourage, motivate, and challenge students to pursue their interests and expand their horizon. I believe positive reinforcement should be used to encourage students and help them feel good about themselves and their accomplishments.
In many cases, it has become very complex to keep students interested in their education. So the teacher must be creative and find ways to keep pushing the student onward as well as upward. In order to devise the ultimate plan for educating students, a teacher must acknowledge that the “students” are what teaching is all about. The most important factor in the equation is unequivocally the STUDENT! All humans are different in some sort or fashion. But the fact still exists that we all have only this place to function in. So help by putting forth an effort to make it a better place for us all.
