Philosphy of Teaching
The purpose of this paper is to identify/describe and discuss my personal philosophy teaching. As I describe my theory of learning I will talk about experiences that have affected me. As well as identifying areas of pedagogy that have influenced my personal philosophy. I will then describe how my philosophy teaching guides my teaching style.
Personal Experinces
My personal philosophy of teaching has its foundations in my experiences as a student. These experiences as a student have affected my beliefs about teaching and learning. I remember my third grade teacher, Mr Luther to this day, and I feel like he was one of the best teachers I had because not only did he teach the subjects to us but encouraged us to learn on our own. He did this by creating a safe working environment for students to learn. A place where we felt that we, even though we were young could ask questions and formulate ideas. He also main learning fun and active experience. Mr. Luther had done was to bring the math Olympics to our school. Math was never one of my favorite topics, but having to do the math flash cards and problems, then being able to run or skip or go through obstacles to move my team forward, was a great incentive for me.
Pedagogics
Kolb’s Theory of Experiential Learning describes learning as a process, a 4 stage cycle in which learning is grounded in experiences. Learners move through phases of concrete experience, rereflective observation, abstract conceptualization, an active experimentation as they learn new tasks(Nilson, 2010).

My development as a learner was encouraged by a handful of teachers who were passionate, willing to adapt their teaching styles to my style of learning to help me reach my full potential. Their actions encouraged me to be confident in myself and my ability to learn. My philospy of teaching is that all people have the ability to learn, and by empowering students to learn, Kolb’s and Felder and Silverman’s learning style models have influence my teaching philosophy in that they encourage please add a variety of teaching methods to help students with different learning preferences. Therefore, by recognizing that there are different styles of learning and using different methods to explore topics, students learning is maximized and they are able to recognize their own potential and achieve success.
After reading the book “Perspectives on Learning” I have gained an enormous amount of knowledge on not only how to become a teacher, but what it takes in order to become a successful teacher. The biggest message I gained from the reading is that there is more than just one type of learning style. This book has taught me many theories, strategies, and skills that are useful in the teaching field. The book gave multiple perspectives on learning and encouraged different types of facilitated learning. Every student learns a different way and there is not one way that works best for everyone. Learning is defined as a permanent change in attitude or behaviour that occurs as a result of repeated experience (Sims & Sims, 1995). Understanding one’s learning style has many advantages as it can help one to identify the learning method or activities that can help to optimise the learning experience. It has been suggested that the importance of one’s learning style has been identified through studies and research on how one can maximise the potential for success and further learning development (Honey & Mumford, 2006). Learning styles are unique to each individual and are developed in childhood (Chase, 2001). We all have different personalities; therefore we all have preferred learning styles that suit us best. The way one learns depends on preference. Some learn by observing, listening and imitating others and draw conclusions from their experience. There are several factors that affect our learning style; for example, background, culture, religion and environment can have a major influence on one’s learning.
I believe that teaching and learning is both a science and an art, which requires the implementation of already determined rules. I see learning as the result of internal forces within the person student. I know that children differ in the way they learn and grow but I also know that all children can learn. Students’ increased understanding of their own experience is a legitimate form of knowledge. I will present my students with opportunities to develop the ability to meet personal knowledge.
Upon being faced with the task of writing my philosophy of teaching, I made many attempts to narrow the basis for my philosophy down to one or two simple ideas. However, I quickly came to the realization that my personal teaching philosophy stems from many other ideas, philosophies, and personal experiences. I then concentrated my efforts on finding the strongest points of my personal beliefs about teaching and what I have learned this semester, and came up with the following.
I know that as I grow and learn as a teacher my theory on education will change and grow with me. I know that the best thing that I can bring to the table when it comes to being a teacher is the willingness to learn along with my students on what works best for us in our classroom, what is important to us when it comes to learning, and to change what needs to be change in order to have a positive learning environment for my student. My personal views on teaching have evolved and developed in a rapid manner over the years, having experienced the situation from both a student and a teachers' perspective. My teaching methodology has grown and expanded in a bid to reach every student whilst keeping in line with their personality and individuality.

The one belief I had about teaching that has changed since I began this unit, is that all teachers, more or less, taught in the same way. Perhaps this is a belief that I had formed from my own time at school, where all my teachers taught in the same way; some were more or less effective, but I wasn’t aware of them using theories or methods as such, more that they were or weren’t kind people. This belief has changed and it has really opened my ideas to the many creative models, and instructional methods a teacher can use.
This paper will identify which of the Kolb learning styles best suits me and why I think so. It will also give some examples from my past and present to support these findings. After determining, the learning styles that best fit me and completing an inventory exercise, I have concluded that I learn best using audio and visual techniques in the learning process. I agree with everything this exercise has brought to light. I never knew that these styles were the meaning by which I learned. I have also included examples as to how I see the use and benefits of these learning styles in my career.
I would not be considered your typical college student in search of an education degree. I am a 31 year old male, married, with two children, and working on my second career. My previous life consisted of working in the coal mines till I was injured. My injury, however, is considered a blessing in disguise. My injury has leaded me to the world of education.

Have you ever sat down and thought about who your favorite teacher was during your primary and secondary school years? Did you enjoy their class because it was exciting, educational, and unique? When I decided to become a teacher I sat down and asked myself these very questions. After graduation it was very difficult for me to decide on how to further my life, college or entering the work force. After looking back on my life and trying to decide what has made the biggest influence on it, teaching has given me the greatest joy and pride. This is why I have decided to become an elementary teacher. Teachers are very special people placed on earth to aid in the education process of children. Teachers in today’s school system have their own style of teaching which can range from the basics of essentialism to the laid back approach of progressivism. I personally am not going to limit myself to one style of teaching. When I become a teacher I will have an eclectic view of different philosophies and teaching styles for my classroom.
Thought out our lives, we are faced with many different learning experiences. Some of these experiences have made a better impact than others. This can be attributed to everyone’s different multiple intelligences or learning styles. A persons learning style is the method though which they gain information about their environment. As a teacher, it is our responsibility to know these styles, so we can reach each of our students and use all of the necessary methods.
Teaching is a daunting task that I do not intend to take lightly. Becoming a teacher has been a dream of mine for several years. I always knew that teaching would be the career for me, especially when I began working in the school system as a substitute secretary. I loved working in the school environment; coming in contact with children everyday made me realize how much I would enjoy teaching a classroom full of students.
