Exploring love and myself In our daily lives, we always mention love and experience love. However, no one can truly, completely know what “love” is. That is the reason why love has been a topic that many philosophers, psychologists or common people keep discussing for decades. Besides, we often talk about “self”. There are classes to teach people how to build up their self-esteem and self-confidence. Also, the importance of self-discipline is taught at schools. In this essay, I am going to talk about how love and self are related to me with my personal experience as explanations. First of all, Sternberg’s Triangular Theory of Love (Sternberg, 1986) suggested that there are three components of love, including intimacy, passion and commitment, …show more content…
He said he felt right and good when being with me, so he asked me to be his girlfriend. Then I agreed and we have made a decision to be in a romantic relationship. Every time when we were having a date, we had a lot of conversations and shared our joys and sadness. Sometimes we held hands and kissed each other's lips. Sometimes I would sit aside to watch him playing basketball with his friends because he was so charming when doing sports. We were very close at that time. With commitment, intimacy and passion components, we were adopting consummate love style, which is also called true love (Sternberg, …show more content…
We have not been contacting each other anymore. With absence of passion, intimacy and commitment components, we were back to non-love again (Sternberg, 1986). In the following, I am going to talk about the self-concept. Self-concept suggested that there are different kinds of self, such as actual self, ideal self, physical self, public self and spiritual self (Buss, 2001). First, let’s talk about the actual self. Actual self means how we think about ourselves and the actual characteristics we have. I am a lazy person. Every time when I take the clean clothes that have just been washed and dried back to my room, I will not fold them and put them back into the wardrobe immediately. I will leave them there for a period of time. When I have to go to bed at night, I usually put those unfolded clothes on my chair and my desk and put them back on the bed when I have to use my desk. After a week or longer, I will finally tidy up my room. So this shows that I am really lazy and that is a part of my actual
According to Carl Rogers (1959) self concept has three different components: The view you have of yourself (Self image); How much value you place on yourself (Self esteem or self-worth); What you wish you were really like (Ideal self). These ideas of self concept do not necessary have to reflect the reality of what is to be known as truth to the outside observer. Such as in the case of those who struggle with anorexia. Though they may appear to the observer as being extremely underweight through the eyes of the observed they find themselves to be overweight. This is believed to be related to concept of self image. Baumeister (1999) provides the following self concept definition: "the individual's belief about himself or herself, including the person's attributes and who and what the self
The first unit on our textbook Interactions by Ann Moseley and Jeanette Harris talks about the self-concept. It is hard to find a definition for the self-concept because it is certain beliefs about ethnicity, religion, and personalities combined. This unit has a number of readings by various authors where it shows struggles with the self. Self-identity, ethnic backgrounds, and self-esteem are the major aspects of those readings. After reading their writings I found that I could relate to their experiences. The three readings that got my attention were “Zero” By Paul Logan, “I’m Just Me” by Lylah Alphonse, and “The Jacket” by Gary Soto.
What does sense of self-mean? It means what that person sees when they look in a mirror. Whether it is a decent, awful or an indifferent image. Everyone’s self-image is different, and that’s acceptable; normal even. No one person is exactly the same. The authors explain how a sense of self is like internal conflicts and the decision to lie in order to gain approval.
Self-concept is who you think you are and the relatively stable set of perceptions you hold of your self, not only the physical features but also including emotional states, talents, likes, values, roles.
The article, “Measurement of Romantic Love” written by Zick Rubin, expresses the initial research aimed at presenting and validating the social-psychological construct of romantic love. The author assumed that love should be measured independently from liking. In this research, the romantic love was also conceptualized to three elements: affiliative and depend need, an orientation of exclusiveness and absorption, and finally a predisposition to help.
Saul McLeod(2008) said that the term self-concept is a general term used to refer to how someone thinks about, evaluates or perceives themselves. To be aware of oneself is to have a concept of oneself.
There are many types of self that people can fit into. There is who I am (actual self), who I might become (po...
In order to understand how one perceives situations and how they can determine the way one communicates; we first must understand the value of self-concept. Self is easily defined; it is one's beliefs, attitudes, feelings and values. It is who one is and what one stands for. Self-concept, is a relevantly stable set of perceptions and emotional states. It is the way one sees and understands oneself, and contributes to how one perceives oneself and perceives situations. One's self-concept may alter their perception, and either enhance or impede one's communication effectiveness. The way one sees oneself can influence the way they see their social surroundings. Only after one become aware of oneself can they be aware of their physical and social surroundings, which will allow one to perceive situations and people with a truer idea and create a more positive outcome.
My first day of classes my freshmen year of college, I met Brody. He was my peer instructor for an introduction class to college called ICS (Intro to College Success). When I saw him I knew that I was attracted to him but he was a big, sophomore, football type of guy and I was a shy, tiny little freshman. It seemed like I did not have a chance. Throughout the next couple weeks we got to know each other through simple class activities but we never talked about anything personal. Finally, a mutual friend was tired of me gushing about Brody and how much I liked him so, our friend decided to explain to Brody my feelings. It only took 5 minutes for Brody to reach out to me. From there, we started hanging out and eventually moved into an intimate relationship. The timing was not right for us so it ended with minimal hurt feelings. Since then, we have both expressed interest in getting back together but the timing has not been right still. Currently, we have terminated the relationship but this is actually a common stage between us. Interpersonal communication is the biggest factor of our relationship and how well we communicate with each other determines how well the relationship will go. The most essential influence in our relationship is self-disclosure because it affects how we move through social stages. Relationships do not follow a straight path that leads to bliss. They are messy, complicated and even contradictory.
Self-love helps build the foundation of who we really are so if this foundation is not solid, life can feel shaky at times. When we truly start to love ourselves, things begin to fall into place for us and life itself begins to feel truly beautiful which is the way life was intended to be felt.
A self is some sort of inner being or principle, essential to, but not identical with, the person as whole. It is that in a person that thinks and feels. The self is usually conceived in philosophy as that which one refer to with the word “I”. It is that part or aspects of a person that accounts for personal identity through time. In spite of all the ways one can change with time, the self is invariably same through time. A self is what is supposed to account for the fact that an individual is same person today as he/she was at the age of five, given that all his characteristics have changed over time. For instance, compared to his childhood, this individual is stronger, taller, and smarter; he has different aspirations and dreams, different thoughts and fears, his interests and activities are remarkably different. Yet, he is still the same ...
For a healthy relationship, one needs to be able to function without total dependence on their mate. There are three main aspects of love. According to the triangular theory of love, these three components include intimacy, passion, and decision/commitment. Intimacy is the feeling of being connected and close to another person. It is getting to know the person beyond the friendship level and understanding them on a romantic level.
n Robert Sternberg 's triangular theory of love, love is separated down into three different components. Passion, Intimacy, and Commitment are the three components of love and take on different roles in the theory of love. Passion involves physical and sexual attraction to the someone of interest. The feeling of excitement is also associated with passion, individuals tend to very excited to see their partner. Intimacy involves security, a sense of comfort and trust. If information about oneself is shared that it will be safe in the person of interest hands. Communication is the key element in this component. Commitment involves a decision of forming a long term relationship based on feelings for someone of interest. This in modern time in called
Love is a weird feeling. It’s been said that love has nothing to do with your heart, it 's all chemical reactions inside of your brain. Infatuation, attraction, crush is such powerful feelings that people do think that they are in love. Also, it is blind to the other person’s weaknesses and exaggerates his or her strengths. Similarly, infatuation often fades within a short time. However, true love is so real and so strong, strong enough that if it came down to it you would even die for your partner. Love as much more than a feeling. It is based on a well-rounded knowledge of a person’s strengths and weaknesses. Not so in the case of China and Jeremy, in T. Coraghessan Boyle “The Love of my Life.” Before we talk about them
Love is the core of who you innately are. It’s highly important to practice loving yourself day to day because it will bring you true and everlasting happiness, inner peace and will improve your heath and wellness. How you speak to yourself is how your feel about yourself deep within, and reflects the
