In my past experience with learning writing, I can group the ways I have been taught into three categories. I have learned by teaching myself how to write, have learned in an academic setting, and have learned through hands-on experience in a professional setting.
The first time that I attempted to write, as I know understand it, was for the purpose of writing a book. At the time, I was only ten years old, so it wound up being a series of short stories consisting of no more than a few pages each. I mostly taught myself how to write in this way. Before writing, I would read part of a book written for kids my age, and try to emulate the author’s voice. What kept me writing in this way was the feedback I received from others. I showed them to my friends and family, and they would tell me how much they liked certain parts of the story. After receiving that feedback, I would then look back at the parts they mentioned, and try to write like I had in the “good” passages.
During this time, I also took it upon myself to put some of my writing online, on a site for literature written by teenagers. On this site, I connected with other writers of my age, and consistently read their work while receiving feedback on mine. While doing this, I taught myself to improve my writing in a

Each class I have taken has had its own approach, which I feel has had a great benefit for my writing. Each class has read a variety of works, and asked of me to look at them through sometimes very different lenses. Similar to my experience in writing for a scientific audience, the different methods of literary analysis I feel have given me a better understanding of how readers from a variety of different backgrounds will read my writing. I have studied English since I was a grade seven, but the curriculum in my middle school and high school years, mainly focuses on reading and speaking components of language skills, with a little focus on writing. As a result, I never felt confident with any piece that I was asked to write. Writing has been a hurdle for me to succeed in college since most of the courses in college requires one or the other way writing skill. Consequently, I have decided to work on my writing skills, and have started working on it; even before, I started taking this English 101 class. I used to use a various educational material which I thought might help me to meet my writing goal. Some of the materials which I was using includes: TOEFL educational materials, You Tube resources, and various novels. All of these resources have helped me to polish my writing skills. Furthermore, after I started taking this class, I have learned to enjoy writing. I have made it a point to communicate my own thoughts and feelings as opposed to simply summarize the thoughts of famous writers and authors before me. This class builds up my confidence in my own writing and for that I am highly appreciative.
When demonstrating my growth as a writer across several pieces, there are four main learning outcomes in which I have focused on. These include writing, reading, researching and reflecting. Within these learning outcomes, there are many different conventions and ways to understand my various projects and assignments as a writer. Throughout the English 1020 class, I have been able to observe not only my previous strengths, but myself growing as a writer by improving my ability to find strong sources as well as properly citing and explaining them, forming a more logical paragraph structure, and many more conventions when writing an assignment.
There are various ways writers can evaluate their techniques applied in writing. The genre of writing about writing can be approached in various ways – from a process paper to sharing personal experience. The elements that go into this specific genre include answers to the five most important questions who, what, where, and why they write. Anne Lamott, Junot Diaz, Kent Haruf, and Susan Sontag discuss these ideas in their individual investigations. These authors create different experiences for the reader, but these same themes emerge: fears of failing, personal feelings toward writing, and most importantly personal insight on the importance of writing and what works and does not work in their writing procedures.
Writing is a way in which a person can express their thoughts and ideas through the use of words. Everybody has their own writing styles. Some may consider theirs as inspirational while others think of it to be bad. Writing requires a lot of patience and time. In my case, writing has never been my favorite thing to do. I am no Shakespeare and I never will be, writing has always made me feel uncomfortable. In the past, I had always considered writing to be one of the most difficult tasks. I often wrote about topics that were not of my interest. I rarely did any writing out of school or for leisure as most people do. I only wrote because the teacher asked us to. Writing has always been forced onto me. Even though my writing isn't that great, I've felt that I've never been given the freedom to express my voice. Academic writing has always made me anxious. And, anxiety had resulted in my procrastination. Even though I consider writing to be one of the toughest tasks, I've felt that giving myself enough time to think allows me to do better. Silence helps me think beyond horizons. However, the fear of impressing someone, the anxiety and frustration is what makes me a developing writer.
I am sitting in my bed, thinking about my process of writing as I am trying to go through it. It seems the more I think about it, the less I understand it. When I am writing, I don’t think. Which I know, sounds bad. But, I spend every single moment of every single day over thinking, over analyzing, and over assuming every aspect of my life. When I’m writing, I’m free from that for just a little bit. Until of course, my hands stop typing or the pencil (no pens- never pens) stops moving, then I’m right back on the carousel that is my brain. I improved on many aspects of my writing throughout the duration of this class, but there are still some things I need to refine. Over the course my writing skills have gotten better due to the instructor’s feedback, peer reviews, and just me learning. I enjoyed peer reviews because sometimes it is easier to relate to someone my own age. The overall structure and flow of my essays have improved, as well as the use of word choice and quotations. Throughout this course, I was able to apply critical thinking and reading skills to different texts, compose essays with appropriate content development and organization, use correct style by practicing the steps of the writing process, and reflect on my own development as a writer. Over the years of my schooling, I have gradually developed my writing preparation to help me become a better writer. I continue to find ways to improve my writing abilities by working on my weaknesses and by incorporating the feedback I receive from my peers and my instructors into my essays. At times, I still struggle when preparing to start my essay, but with precise and organized planning and obtaining the help of others, I am certain that I will become more proficient in my writing
For as long as I can remember, I have always enjoyed writing. Writing is an opportunity for me to express my thoughts and feelings while helping me grow to understand who I am as an individual, a student and furthermore, a future teacher. Yet, if someone were to ask me how I do it, I am afraid I could not give him or her a clear and precise answer. Trying to find that answer almost seems harder for me than the actual writing process itself. However, after having done my student teaching last semester, I have learned that modeling my own writing for the students not only helps them to see more clearly how I write, but helps me understand how I write as well.
It has took me 19 years to realize every writer has strengths and weakness. Entering your freshman year English 1101 class, I had the basic fundamentals of writing. I was very strong in following the writing process: 1.Brainstorming, 2.Rough draft, 3.First draft, 4.Final draft. However despite knowing the writing process I still had trouble following through with the writing process.
I thought I had mastered the ability of becoming an effective and efficient writer when I was in high school, but to my surprise I would later learn that there was much more for me to learn about writing. I did not always consider myself a good writer. In fact, it was something I had to work at in order to improve. As I continued my education in college, I gained more and more knowledge about writing. I learned different forms and styles of writing and a variety of details along with basic fundamentals that accommodated the specific classes had to write for. It is shown in this quote that when you begin writing you know nothing, you have to learn and develop a writing style as you write more, it takes time to become a good writer. Throughout my many years of writing, my writing styles have changed greatly. In middle school I had never written an essay based on a book. This year I have gone from being utterly confused on how to write an essay about a book, to having a full understanding of what I’m writing. Each writer establishes their own writing process. For some, writing may come naturally and is fairly easy to pick up on, while others may struggle with writing. Fortunately, I feel as if writing comes naturally to me. As a benefit, my dad is an English teacher-- which means I have been practicing my writing and grammar skills from a young age. As a writer, I think that I am not as good as I thought I was back in high school. I see myself as a student who tries their best, but makes “B” average work. I have never really taken the time to relate to my papers. I always just wrote what the teacher wanted and handed it in. In my mind, I never really liked trying to explain in full detail what something meant. Back in high school, my teachers always wanted me to explain my writing in such depth that a kindergartener would understand why Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy. Trying to explain my writing was always very tiring. I often would get bored trying to explain and just stop writing and do something else for a while.
