As a writer, I would consider myself to be an average writer in need of improvement. My experience with writing has not always been the best because I was exposed to only certain types of papers like self-narratives, book reports, reflective essays and simple one to two-page research on a person’s bibliography assigned to me. Writing has never been my strength because I had to learn the English language at 8 years of age. I had to learn a new language without the help of my parents because they also did not speak English. I was able to overcome this obstacle but till this day, I still have some grammatical struggles. It is hard for me to write and to be able to distinguish my grammatical errors. I did the same steps outside of the classroom and would make them be due a certain date that I had set for myself. I felt that my method of writing did work for me because earned an “A” on the assignment. It helped me keep track of what I was doing and keep pace on when the due date and not having to do the work the night before. The technique of doing the graphs separately and later bringing them together to create the final version of the paper. This method was really helpful in having a successful grade. This assignment gave me the opportunity to liberate my feelings about the conflict with my aunt how was accusing me of robbery. I was able to reflect upon this conflict and tell my side of the story. It made me feel free and free of judgment. Writing about my family conflict helped me with the forgiveness to those people that had caused me harm. I am sitting in my bed, thinking about my process of writing as I am trying to go through it. It seems the more I think about it, the less I understand it. When I am writing, I don’t think. Which I know, sounds bad. But, I spend every single moment of every single day over thinking, over analyzing, and over assuming every aspect of my life. When I’m writing, I’m free from that for just a little bit. Until of course, my hands stop typing or the pencil (no pens- never pens) stops moving, then I’m right back on the carousel that is my brain. I thought I had mastered the ability of becoming an effective and efficient writer when I was in high school, but to my surprise I would later learn that there was much more for me to learn about writing. I did not always consider myself a good writer. In fact, it was something I had to work at in order to improve. As I continued my education in college, I gained more and more knowledge about writing. I learned different forms and styles of writing and a variety of details along with basic fundamentals that accommodated the specific classes had to write for. The words reading and writing used to make me cringe. The thought of putting my own ideas down on paper gave me complete anxiety. And worse, the thought of reading 300 plus words made me sick. When assigned papers and reading my stress level would rocket, to the point where I didn’t even want to try. It wasn’t until I realized who my sister was as a writer and reader that, I too, could become half of where she was at. Not only did my sister help me realize who I am as a reader and writer, she made me realize that I could actually enjoy the things I hated most. With the help of my sister and my 12th grade English teacher, I was able to pinpoint what my level as a reader and writer was and helped me learn to question and look into something with a deeper understanding, making these two things seem much easier.
My story as a writer has constantly changed as I've gotten older and experienced new writing situations in my job field in the military. When I was younger, of course I had to write for school like everyone else but I also used to write short stories in my free time, that I would keep to myself. I enjoyed writing in my free time more because it allowed me the freedom to write stories on what I wanted and at my pace and it was like a hobby. When I entered my AP Literature class, I had a smile in my face because I was ready learn how to improve in reading and writing. I always received a C in reading and writing; it was never for me and my smile always disappeared.
I do not think of myself as much of a writer. To me a writer is someone who enjoys writing. Lately in the past few years I have had a strong dislike for it. For so many years I have been forced to write. Writings such as research papers, persuasive essays, class journals and personal narratives for classes in high school.
There are many different types of events that shape who we are as writers and how we view literacy. Reading and writing is viewed as a chore among a number of people because of bad experiences they had when they were first starting to read and write. In my experience reading and writing has always been something to rejoice, not renounce, and that is because I have had positive memories about them.
Ever since I was a child I have loved reading interesting literature. The very first books I recall picking up as a child were the stories of Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland. I got them as a Christmas present and I remember thinking how lovely it would be to actually understand the words that were printed onto the paper. So I started teaching myself how to read, with a little help from my mother of course. Every time I had figured out how to pronounce a new word, I would run of to my mother so that she could explain the meaning of the word.
I am very interested in attending the Belin Blank Summer Institute for creative writing. I love expressing myself and one of my favorite ways to do it is through writing. Writing is a great thing no matter what kind you enjoy. From deep and meaningful poems to fun and exciting stories there is no boring form of creative writing.
Writing has always been a means of expression but also a skill to bring to the professional world. I have found my own writing skills improve naturally as I matured as an individual, however the leaps I made came from active experiences that directly tested my ability to write. This was mainly from academic sources where I had to mold my mind differently depending on the writing. I found this difficult as I was more focused on forming empirical analysis and I was unable to stay on topic. Although I had my difficulties, I am also thankful for exposing my weaknesses. By experience, I have improved in writing a lot from continuously reading and writing different forms of essays, all while improving my writing organization.
The classroom is filled with soft whispers and chatter from the students. The soft noises are drowned out by the teachers booming voice reading a book out loud to the class. It feels as though the teacher finds a reason to stop every two seconds to explain what is going on. I roll my eyes and tune out her voice while continuing to read ahead. ‘We are juniors in high school, we know how to read.
Writing has always played a salient role in my life. I use writing as a way to express myself and share my thoughts and ideas. My first major writing assignment made me realize the crucialness writing. I was in my sixth grade Language Arts class when my teacher assigned us a huge poetry project. We had to write a book featuring different types of poems (i.e. haikus, limerick), while also incorporating figurative language.
Dear Professor Heller, At the start of the semester, I had made a personal goal for myself which was to improve my English verbal and writing skills. I feel after working on different essays, writing pieces and finally the research paper, I have learned a lot and have become a much better writer. Over the last few weeks, I have also felt that I have accomplished my goal of becoming better at my English verbal skills as I made it a point to practice a lot as English is not my first language and I have always struggled with proper pronunciation and grammar.
Before taking English 1A, I was a discouraged writer because as an English learner, I did not believe that I had any ability to be an acceptable writer. Therefore, I did not have any joy while I was doing writing assignments. However, I have gradually loved writing through this semester. I fortunately got plenty of helps from my classmates and professor; thus, my writing skills have gotten improved a lot. I currently can feel that writing is a quite enjoyable process, and I like delivering my ideas to other people by writing, too. I am really proud that I have enhanced my pre-writing skills, writing structure and revising skills and have learned how to write an effective thesis statement and how to deal with rhetorical analysis. However, I still have lots of deficiencies in my articles, such as grammar problem and the lack of logical transition.
I have fairly basic experience with academic writing. I excel in writing essays for courses in history, english, and art history, in high school as well as my first few years of college. I have experience with many historical and analytical papers throughout college and high school. I am able to write long (10 pages) papers with efficiency and organization and have always been commended for my writing skills. I am also an avid creative writer. I write a lot of lyrics/poems in my free time as well as a collection of short stories. Although I have had nothing published in the past, I dream of becoming an author and getting my writing out to the public. My strengths as a writer are my creativity, organization, and flow. I am able to think
