A strength from my PDP part A which I would like to improve on is my ability to quickly grasp concepts from lectures and assignments. This strength allows me to do well in school and receive grades that I am happy with. I would love to be able to further improve this strength because it will allow me to succeed in my future schooling. It will also aid me in having a successful career as a nurse, because nurses are known for having to constantly learn new information throughout their career. Although I am good at grasping ideas and remembering them for a short period of time, I tend to forget them in the long run. This is an important strength for my future career as a nurse because of the constant interactions nurses have with patients and other health care workers. It is also an important strength in everyday life, because of the necessity of constantly having to communicate with people in school as well as in public. In order to improve this skill, I have decided to use strategies, which I have learned in class as well as books such as the “EQ Edge”. By reading books about communication and implementing their advice, I have been able to avoid conflicts and resolve them much faster than before. For example, when I failed to complete a task that I had to around the house, I was able to effectively communicate my point across to my mom without becoming extremely defensive. I still have a long way to go to always remember to implement communication strategies but I believe with time it is something that I will be able to achieve. By the time I am ready to start my career as a nurse, I am hoping to be able to always communicate effectively with those around
I am the person who talks to the people in the grocery store line and leaves by having already given a verbal dissertation on my life or viewpoint. This is a downfall/habit I believe I learned from my family, I am the third generation of "20 Minute talks" I have an inability to stop talking or openly discussing with people. As I have learned to harness myself over the years, I see how it aids in my influencing people, because if someone hears something enough they will begin to believe in your vision or your observation. This also is my direct line to building trust, because it is not only spewing out words and explaining it is paired with listening and being attentive to what others are saying. I align everyday discussion with purposeful direct professional advices. Communication does help me with students when they are trying to explain something and lose words or cannot describe things, it helps them fill in blanks. In Physical Education it is key, I not only have to show visually the movements and actions but verbalize and communicate the sequences for students to use as guidelines for success. If my communication is not clear I had a bank of different word approaches to get through to students if it must be differentiated for them. For many years I have had administrators tell me I over-communicate, verbally, email, and memos. Which is a great thing
During the sessions, I realized that my strengths are providing the appropriate amount of verbal and nonverbal signals to the other participant during the conversation. Something that I could work towards is becoming a better listener when the subject matter might not interest me. It is easy to stay engaged in a conversation that strikes interest, but harder to do the same when it might not be as appealing. Living in a shared space with someone I wasn’t familiar with was a learning experience. Having that occurrence has prepared me to be comfortable with managing conflicts. Even though I had the privilege to live alongside another person there will be situations where I am not as skilled despite previous experiences. In preparation, I can continue to grow in this area by practicing my listening skills and understanding that each resident is different. Therefore, different methods of action should take place, and knowing the appropriate places to refer someone is another way I can continue to grow. After taking the assessment on personal conflict management styles I learned more about how I deal with conflict. I learned that I am more likely to look past differences to save the relationship and I would opt for a calmer approach to conflicts when I notice there a difference between me and another individual. This type of communication is considered the healthiest because it is free from bias. The nurse, who is an assertive communicator, values the whole picture as opposed to only one small piece of the equation. This approach takes into account all individuals involved, and validates the thoughts and feelings of others. Besides assertive communication, the nurse should take a collaborative approach to conflict management. Both strategies empower individuals to work together and accomplish goals successfully (Cherry & Jacob, 2011).
Communication is a very effective way of get things resolved. What we do at my work place, all staff have weekly meetings about positive and negative situations that have been encountered during the week. There are many factors that contribute to being able to interact successfully. In this paper I will discuss non-verbal and verbal language; and I will explain how I use them in my daily life and its importance in my future career. I will also go over whether or not my actions are assertive or non-assertive since this is a big factor in whether or not you appear to be confident in your job or personal conversations and in order to put your client at ease.
One’s career, school life, and even socializing are affected by communication. If you do not know how to communicate, you probably do not have many friends. Communication has been used since the days of the cavemen. When the cavemen learned to communicate they greatly increased their hunting potential. When they learned to communicate on the hunt and before the hunt, they caught much more game then when they were just randomly running after the animals with spears. In school, if teachers and students could not communicate well, how would anything ever get done? In a business, communication is the most important ingredient. Working at a corporation at a higher level, you deal with hundreds of important emails, meetings, phone calls, and other forms of communicating with your co-workers.
Improving my communication skills has been a work in progress starting back in the early years of my life. I have always been my own worse critic. Usually beating myself down through interpersonal communication. Now as an adult I have made great improvements but still have trouble dealing with perception and self-image. Not being raised in an environment of positive reinforcement and poor communication in the workplace I have made it a point to change that trait in my own family and professional environment.
Throughout this school year, I have grown in some areas while other aspects have not. I have grown in the way I take notes and I now understand which strategies work for me. In order to improve by thinking further, I need to clearly understand what helps my thinking and what hinders it.
Let me tell you about communication skills. First, it is often just as important to listen and learn from someone else as it is to do work alone.. You can get to know people better even if you didn't know them before. You can learn good verbal communication and writing skills.
In turn, having competent communicative abilities contributes to progression and maturation in many aspects of life, with education and employment being majorly affected facets. Upon entering this course this semester, I was unaware of my lack of important communication skills interpersonally, intrapersonally, and interprofessionally. Throughout my semester in this course, I have explored many different styles and skills used in communication. I have been able to recognize my strengths and weaknesses, and I have also been able to make noticeable and satisfying incremental improvements to enhance my communication. In this paper I will reflect on the knowledge I have gained throughout this semester that has allowed me to better my communication skills; I will do this by providing examples from my life. Furthermore, I will explore how I can continue to develop my commination skills in the future.
