If you are entering a teaching profession you can take away a lot of good themes from this book. I believe a lot of the teachers go through similar experiences like Mr. Mitch with his students. You will be working with students from different ethic backgrounds, cultures, race, and perspective, and it is your responsibility as a teacher to help these students succeed in and outside of your classroom. There may be cases where you are going to work with students who come from struggling families, and lack of proper resources to take their education serious. You cannot get discouraged about you can only try your best to help these students succeed regardless of the circumstances. Even though you are in charge of your classroom and you are the teacher some times you have to sit back and learn from other students. You will learn that you are not just an educator, but friend, a role model who these young children look up to. Each classroom will have their own unique teaching style that favor majority of the students, and when you find their strengths it is your duty to capitalize on it, and make the class fun and interesting. I believe if you have a passion for teaching you will figure out the most effective and efficient ways teaching and connecting to your students through experiences. You will fail. You will succeed. You will be depressed! You will be afraid! But ultimately I believe teaching is one of the most fulfilling professions in the world. Reading this book has given me more motivation to be successful in life. I can compare Bill Strickland and my life to some extent. Bill grew up in the ghetto, in Pittsburgh. Strickland’s town was falling apart and going downhill, but his mother made sure not to let her children be taken by the ghetto. Although the town was not beautiful in the outside, Bills mother always made sure her house and children were clean and up to shape. While Strickland was in High School, he met Frank Ross. I’ve never been really good at writing conclusions, but I feel this is a good time to conclude or else I pose the risk of rambling (and who wants to read the ramblings of a teenager?). I suppose that a sufficient lesson to learn from this book is to not allow others to dictate your life. We always have parents, friends, teachers, and a number of other people giving their unwanted opinions of what the feel you should or shouldn’t do. There has to come a point where you just say, “Screw your opinion” and just go for your dreams. At the end of the day it’s your life to live, and you have to deal with the consequences of your decisions or lack thereof.
I contemplated attending graduate school for School Psychology or Educational Administration after completing my undergraduate degree, but I feel that classroom teaching experience will be absolutely vital for success in any career in education. I believe that classroom experience will provide me the exposure and knowledge that will allow me to not only become a professional and successful teacher, but also help to solidify the path I should take for my own education. As a person who enjoys continually learning and growing, I can see myself using the understanding I gained from working in the classroom to shape my future educational goals. I can relate to chapter one which introduces some the many influences that the author encountered. Here in college there are many influences both good and bad. With me being a Christian growing up in church all my life, basically being a PK (Preacher’s Kid) it is difficult to maintain that part of me when there are influences similar to the ones the author encountered. I’m learning chapter 2 reminds me of two things such as when I left to go to California for an education summit, and how my little sister clung to me since she didn’t want me to leave. It also reminds me of when I was packing to leave for college and how my family all came to sit with me that night. Perhaps the most powerful takeaway I had from the book would be the concept of being the average of your five best friends in terms of income, health, finances and many other aspects of life. When I use to go into classrooms I was more of an observer and just blended in, but now I am starting to see myself with authority in the classroom. This experience also teaches me about the major difference that just a single grade can make. While working in the kindergarten classroom we are focusing on learning the alphabet, but in the first grade classroom we are reading books that have multiple sentences on a page. Therefore, as I continue on in this program I will understand how to best use what I am being taught to help those that I am teaching. As for my personal teaching philosophies I am learning how I want to make sure I get across to all of my students. In my elementary school, students who were struggling, including myself, were pulled out of the classroom to receive the help they need, but now I see how the idea of an inclusive classroom can be so much more beneficial. Keeping all of the students in one classroom and fitting the lesson plans to fit them all will allow the students to flourish with all different types of learners. So,I would recommend this article to be discussed at teachers’ meetings in different types of educational institutions because the criteria of successful and creative teaching the author identifies in his article are universal and simple at the same time: just be dedicated to your job, care about your students, and don’t be afraid to learn and use new ideas in your classroom. Hence, creativity in the classroom often begins with a good teacher.
There are many reasons people decide to enter the teaching field. Some enter because they enjoy working with people or children, others because they like being off during the summer months, and still others because of their love for a particular subject. Although all these reasons are valid, I feel my reasons are much simpler. The bottom line is that I love kids and enjoy working with them. My desire to make learning a more positive experience for them has only increased with time.
My interest in teaching started at a young age. I used to watch my teachers in awe as they were able to find new ways to get their students involved and excited to learn. Their enthusiasm to teach was so inspiring. I would often find myself using that same fervor as I grasped each concept. I, then, was able to relay it to my fellow classmates as a peer tutor. Through my own experiences, and as enforced by others' opinions in the profession, I have found that teaching is one of the most rewarding careers. Not only are you placed in the position of instructing and guiding children and young adults through the life long learning process, but you are able to give back to the schools and communities which have supported your early education and experiences that opened you up to a bright future. These are vital parts that have contributed to framing me into the person I’ve become. They have also shaped my short-term and long-term goals in life. It’s critical for one to have a vision for their life and what they anticipate to accomplish. Without a vision or desire there is no hope for one to continue and to purse anything. My experiences with in my passions have helped me aligned my vision for my life. They have given me the valuable knowledge that have set me up for success to get to this point in life.
