A. Parenting
1. While growing up I experienced the authoritative parenting style. According to Baumrind’s parenting styles, authoritative parenting is when parents have high expectations for their children, but also display that their child is loved and valued. (Steinberg, Bornstein, Vandell, & Rook, 2011). Both of my parents have demonstrated acts of authoritative parenting. My parents push me for success and teach me how to be a respectful and responsible person. Throughout high school, they gave me a curfew each night and gave my consequences when I failed to meet their expectations.
2. The authoritative parenting style has affected my development because it helped me become a structured, responsible individual. My parents’ love and support for me has pushed me to achieve great things and remain motivated. 3. When I have children in the future, I plan to use the authoritative parenting style like my parents used for me. I think that this parenting style is most beneficial because it teaches children responsibility and structure. It also focuses on making a child feel loved and important and that is something I find imperative for my future children.
B. Reflections
1. Over the course of this class, I have learned a variety of skills and information that will benefit me in my future as an educator and parent. For example, I have learned that children have individual differences among cognitive, physical, and socioemotional development. This can help me develop scaffolding techniques, turn taking activities, and variety of teaching skills that can benefit my future students during different levels of learning.
