My Papa’s Waltz - Battered Knuckles
Many people look back on memories with a pleasant slant. A backpacker may love to go to the mountains, but every time that person ventures out he encounters a blizzard. The weather is not always conducive to the backpacker and can cause great discomfort. However, when the hiker returns to his normal routine he usually forgets about the bad experience so that he can continue loving the mountains and happily plan his next adventure. Similarly, Theodore Roethke's, "My Papa's Waltz" is a poem about a man who tries to make a horrible event into something much more pleasant to think about. The speaker seems to be remembering back to his childhood and finally uncovers dark memories about his father. The child in the poem finally realizes that childhood was full of scary nights in which he sometimes feared for his life. The speaker has tried for years to believe that he loved his father, but he finally understands what really happened in his boyhood home.
The speaker in this poem begins by commenting on how much his father drinks. The father ...
The poem is written in the father’s point of view; this gives insight of the father’s character and
father’s childhood, and later in the poem we learn that this contemplation is more specifically
The title of this piece, “Remembered Morning,” establishes what the speaker describes in the stanzas that follow as memory; this fact implies many themes that accompany works concerning the past: nostalgia, regret, and romanticism, for instance. The title, therefore, provides a lens through which to view the speaker’s observations.
The economy is a pivotal part in our everyday life. Consumers are very much affected by the economy whether we think about it or not. Our economic system, once a pure capitalistic system where the government did not regulate the private sector, has shifted to a mixed economy system. Since the emergence of monopolies, the government has increased their involvement in regulating them. With that said, monopolies still exist today. Although they are frowned upon, there are certain benefits monopolies offers. If these benefits do outweigh the detrimental effects, should the government dismantle a monopolistic firm?
Childhood experiences seem to be the ones that are recollected most vividly throughout a person's life. Almost everyone can remember some aspect of his or her childhood experiences, pleasant and unpleasant alike. Theodore Roethke's poem "My Papa's Waltz" suggests even further that this concept could be true. The dance described in this poem illustrates an interaction between father and child that contains more than the expected joyous, loving attitude between the two characters. Roethke's tone in this work exhibits the blended, yet powerful emotions that he, as a grown man, feels when looking back on this childhood experience. The author somewhat implicates feelings of resentment fused with a loving reliance with his father.
While at rock bottom of one’s life, each protagonist maintains sense of security by remembering his past. In Scott Momaday’s The Way to Rainy Mountain, Momaday reclaims his past by remembering the time he spends with his grandmother. Through his grandmother’s death Momaday recollects her: “standing at the wood stove on a winter morning and turning meat in a great iron skillet; sitting at the south window, bent above her beadwork, and afterwards when her vision failed . . . when the weight of the age came upon her; praying. I remember her most often at prayer” (2507). He strongly desires to be at her grave and yearns for belonging through visiting her spiritually. Momaday looks at her grave with despair instead of embracing all the life that she gave him. By Momaday reminiscing about his grandma, he loses hope and bec...
Ice hockey, just like any sport, requires both physical and mental skills in order for the athlete to perform to the best of their ability. Positions in ice hockey include the goaltender, wingers, centers, and defensemen. Each position requires different skills in order to succeed in the role and perform together as a team. There are three zones of play, the defensive, offensive and neutral zones, where players are expected to execute different strategies based on their position on the team. Physical conditioning and developing psychological abilities gives players a competitive edge.
The poem His stillness by Sharon Olds gave her a definite understanding of the man that she called “father.” Olds grew up in an abusive family home because her dad was always known as an alcoholic. Because of her dad’s habit, created hard living environments for her and she wished that her parents never got married. Whenever liquor was in her dad’s system, he was unemotional making life for Olds hard. She never described the things that he did to her. The visit to the doctor’s office made her opened up to her dad. She saw her dad as lovely and caring family man and she never imagine him being the man that he was at the doctor’s office. He did not overreacted when he heard news; instead he was calm and accepted the news. She felt tremendously sad for her dad and from there now she started noticing the man she never knew. Olds and her dad bond grew stronger at the doctor’s office. The man she had always known for his abusive behavior turned out the most caring man in the world.
A monopoly is a market structure in which there is only one producer/seller for a product or service. In other words, the single business is the industry. That individual producer/seller has the power to influence the market prices and decisions. In a very extreme case, a monopolist could be the only owner and seller of a product or service in an industry. A monopoly has an enormous amount of buyers and it has no big competitors what so ever. This is because it has the power to destroy competition. A monopoly controls the prices of the goods and is the price maker as well. Unlike in a perfect competitive market, consumers/customers in a monopolistic market do not have perfect information on the products or services they buy. Consumers have limited choices and have to choose from what it is supplied. The monopolist asserts all the power while the consumers are left with no choice. For example: Imagine if Comcast was the only mass-media company that was able to supply cable TV. If anybody would want to watch TV, they would need to purchase Comcast’s cable service at any given price, as it would be the only cable TV provider.
Regardless of the interpretation one possesses, may it be seen as abusive or loving, it is clear that the poem is more "richly ambiguous" than onlookers might have felt in the first reading (McKenna). After analysis of the poem, Bobby Fong compares it to that of a seesaw in saying, "the elements of joy, are balanced against the elements of fear." Although the certainty of tone may never be known, a further look at aspects that contributes to the writing give viewers' good insight in the mind of Theodore Roethke. Readers frequently hold contradictory interpretations of "My Papa's Waltz," depending on what personal experience they filter the reading through. In the end, critics agree that there is a darkness to the poem that is definite, but equally so, an abundance of love that is undeniable.
According to TIMOTHY J. PERRI, he explains that a monopoly is a firm who is the sole seller of its product, and where there are no close substitutes. (WINTER 1984) Monopoly arises as a result of many factors coming to play into the existence of a monopoly. Some of these factors are the location and owning of a key resource by a firm, an exclusive right given to a firm by a government to produce a certain kind of good, and a very high cost of producing a good and among others. As a result of there being a monopoly, it gives
Good memories-we bury them in the chest of our hearts, locked in so tight, to never be forgotten. Yet, the harder we hold on, the more they seem to slip away. So we document these memories in some way, whether by a photograph, journal entry, or poem. But, the wretched hardships are twisted in with the beautiful moments in life. No one wants to remember the awful memories, but we record them any how. They give us perspective. It’s through life’s trials we grow the most; it’s through living and revisiting our worst moments that we can reflect how wonderful life truly is. Memories about childhood written by nikki Giovanni in “Knoxville, Tennessee” and Li-Young Lee in ”A Hymn to Childhood” are diverse on the their difficult experiences,
This short story has an ironic tone. When reading this short story, it is a pleasant and normal travel to a former home. Anyone can have a similar outlook when going back to a place in one’s childhood and find many thin...
Well the bottom line is that a monopoly is firm that sells almost all the goods or services in a select market. Therefore, without regulations, a company would be able to manipulate the price of their products, because of a lack of competition (Principle of Microeconomics, 2016). Furthermore, if a single company controls the entire market, then there are numerous barriers to entry that discourage competition from entering into it. To truly understand the hold a monopoly firm has on the market; compare the demand curves between a Perfect Competitor and Monopolist firm in Figure
A monopoly is the control or possession in the supply or trade of a commodity or service. Monopolists tend to keep prices high and restrict outputs showing little or no responsiveness to the needs of their customers. Because of this, most governments tend to control monopolies to keep them in check. However, most governments tend to create monopolies for national security, for competing economically internationally, or where most producers would be wasteful or pointless. While monopolies exist in varying degrees, no firm has total monopoly in this era of globalization.
